Mbonimpa is shot as he makes his way home from work in the capital, by a gunman on a motorbike. Family member:

His condition is stable, and has even slightly improved.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban condemns ‘the assassination attempt’ and calls for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

This incident… is part of a growing pattern of politically-motivated violence in Burundi that must be broken before it escalates beyond control.

Several diplomats, including from the United States and France, as well as African Union officials, attend Mbonimpa’s hospital bedside during the night until the arrival of the police.

AU Commission chief Dlamini-Zuma calls on the government to investigate the ‘attempted murder’ as well as ‘all other such killings’, and wishes Mbonimpa ‘a speedy recovery’, while Human Rights Watch Africa chief Bekele calls on the government to ensure his safety.

We are shocked at this blatant attack on one of Burundi’s most prominent and respected activists. The Burundian authorities should take immediate steps to secure Mbonimpa’s safety and protection.

Amnesty International condemns the ‘brazen attack’ it says is part of ‘a disturbing escalation’ of violence.

Mugabe says Ivory Coast President Ouattara blocked him from entering the country after his plane landed at the airport, while Mugabe was serving as rotating chairman of the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). He does not say when the incident happened. He says African leaders refuse to recognise his leadership on regional bodies at the prodding of the French government.

The French are saying that Mugabe is a dangerous man and don’t work with him. Britain is also trying to exert the same influence.

Bashir will join a group of regional leaders, including Ugandan president Museveni, Kenya’s president Kenyetta, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Desalegnin, in Uganda for talks on South Sudan conflict. Ministry of Foreign Affairs official:

[Bashir] has been invited for heads of state meeting on regional issues at State House, Entebbe. We expect him to join them on Monday to discuss the crisis in South Sudan and how to end it.

Bashir’s visit to the East African country will not cause a diplomatic incident because of International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrants for his alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Official:

The African Union (AU) has a different position (not cooperating) on ICC. We respect and abide by it. We have no obligation to arrest him.
