First serious boyfriend

Romance0 Comments

Jolie temporarily abandons acting, and embarks on her first long-term relationship.

One of my boyfriends lived with me at my [mother’s] house when I was just 14. It was the smartest thing my mother could have done because, this way, we weren’t hanging out in a park together. We lived like a married couple for two years. By the time I was 16, I wanted my freedom and wanted to focus on work.

Oh, I threw up. I did. I saw it and I threw up. Just nausea. But the kickboxing was fun. It was the first time I was sent to do kickboxing. But I was 17 and I think I thought I was making a real movie, which is odd, since there’s a scene when I’m decapitated and talking … as one does. But, yeah, I saw it and got really sick. I just remember my brother Jamie [Haven] holding me and saying, ‘It’s going to be all right.

Girl, Interrupted

Film Appearance0 Comments

In this biographical drama directed by James Mangold and based on the memoirs of the same name by Suzanna Kaysen;  Jolie plays trouble-making mental patient Lisa who befriends the new girl Susanna. Together the girls get into tons of trouble and have too much fun until the day that Susanna is going home and Lisa isn’t. Co-starring Wynona Ryder and Brittany Murphy.

I really, genuinely thought I was the only character who was sane in the entire film. And if you watch it closely, that’s exactly how I was playing it: I am just the only sane person here. I was actually almost upset when people said I was so good at playing insane because I never thought she was insane. She was just incredibly honest, which, I guess, made her seem crazy.

This was a side of myself that I didn’t think was in me. But it wasn’t a surprise to people who know me. You spend so much time in your head as an actor, living in the dark, you forget to be free. And I’m the first person to be looking for what freedom means and to feel trapped and in a cage.

It was a real deep connection, a deep marriage, so it’s not that simple to say this or that one thing caused the problems. It’s clear to me that our priorities shifted overnight. We’re not divorced yet. We’re going through a difficult time. I’m not sure what will happen.

The Cradle of Life

Film Appearance0 Comments

Jolie stars in Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. Croft is on a quest to find a box that was obtained by Alexander the Great, racing against time because she wants to obtain the box before it lands into the hands of Dr. Reiss. Other cast members include Ciaran Hinds and Gerald  Butler.

Believe or not, I think it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. For most people, if you had to sit in a corner and think about what makes you sad, and think about what haunts you, and what makes you angry, we could all probably get to that place, but if you had to stand front and center in front of a thousand people, really proud and confident and get them all to follow you out of the room, that’s hard. Do you know what I mean? So there’s this weird feeling that she’s positive and confident all the time that that was very difficult for me.

Taking Lives

Film Appearance0 Comments

Jolie plays a top FBI profiler in Taking Lives. Jolie decides to work with Canadian police to catch a serial killer. Jolie happens to fall in love with a mystery man only to find out he is the one doing the killings. She then fakes a pregnancy to lure her killer into her home. Other cast include Ethan Hawke, Oliver Martinez, and Kiefer Sutherland.

With this one, we studied a lot with the FBI and we tried to get into the mind of the serial killers, both the people playing the killers and for the cops studying them. We all had this kind of really dark crash course in what it’s like to think that way and to see real cases. It was quite shocking to see what they’re really like and how they’re not different from us. Sometimes they have wives and kids and nice houses… It’s strange.

Alexander

Film Appearance0 Comments

In this action adventure, directed by Oliver Stone, Jolie plays Olympias. It was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The complexity of the character… Was I going over the top? Was I making it real? Everything about her from the way that she walked to the way that she spoke. Everything about her had to be correct.

Jolie, Pitt affair

Jolie and Pitt start an affair on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Jolie:

Because of the film, we ended up being brought together to do all these crazy things, and I think we found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened. I think a few months in I realized, ‘God, I can’t wait to get to work.’ … Anything we had to do with each other, we just found a lot of joy in it together and a lot of real teamwork. We just became kind of a pair…It took until, really, the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realize that it might mean something more than we’d earlier allowed ourselves to believe. And both knowing that the reality of that was a big thing, something that was going to take a lot of serious consideration.

The Good Shepherd

Film Appearance0 Comments

In this thriller, directed by Robert De Niro, Jolie plays Clover Russell. In 1939, Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) is a young man with a bright future ahead of him. His life changes dramatically when he’s invited to join Skull and Bones. Through his Skull and Bones connections, Wilson meets Sam Murach (Alec Baldwin), a mysterious FBI agent who asks Wilson to investigate charges that Fredericks is a Nazi sympathizer working with the German government. Later, at a Skull and Bones party, Wilson is introduced to Clover Russell, the sister of one of his classmates and the daughter of a powerful politician; their one-night stand leaves Clover pregnant, and Wilson must leave the woman he loves, Laura (Tammy Blanchard), to wed Clover and give their child a name.

Actually that is the one thing that kept me grounded to her and connected to her, because there was so much about her I didn’t identify with. But her love and her commitment to her son and certainly, having lost her own family to this world of the CIA and now her husband… And the fear that her son would get involved in this kind of dangerous, silent world and that becoming a reality, and how that would feel. So, yeah, in particular fighting for him – it was very personal.”
