iLens announcement

Announcement0 Comments

Apple announces the release of iLens, a smart contact lens that is activated by a series of the user’s blinks. Set to release in May, the iLens has all the features of the iPhone, including the camera. iLens designer, Parker Johnson:

Cellphones have become a huge social faux pas. Nothing is ruder than the glow of an iPhone at a restaurant. That’s why iLens is so great. You can be playing Candy Crush or watching football and no one will ever notice. They may just think you have a tic. However, if the ticking becomes involuntary, consult a physician immediately. The best part about the iLens may be the camera. Ever wish you could’ve capture a photo, but didn’t have time to fiddle with your phone? The iLens captures everything automatically, so you’ll never miss an Instagram, even selfies. All you have to is look into a mirror and wink.

Australia denies App Store trademark

Australia’s Federal Court rules that Apple cannot trademark the term ‘App Store’, upholding a 2013 decision that Apple had appealed in a case that has been ongoing since 2008. Decision:

[..] it would have been rational for members of the public seeking apps for their Apple products to think that there was an association between Apple and the App Store referred to for acquiring those apps. But that is quite a different thing from those members of the public attributing trade mark signification to the words ‘app store’ themselves.

Comes out

Cook comes out to the public in a Businessweek op-ed:

While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven’t publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me.

He says it has helped him develop empathy and understand what being in a minority is like.

It’s been tough and uncomfortable at times, but it has given me the confidence to be myself, to follow my own path, and to rise above adversity and bigotry. It’s also given me the skin of a rhinoceros, which comes in handy when you’re the CEO of Apple.

Rite Aid, CVS shut off Apple Pay

CVS and Rite Aid shut off the service as it apparently conflicts with the CurrentC mobile payment system developed by Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX). CurrentC, which generates a QR code on the merchant’s checkout terminal, is already partnered with WalMart, Best Buy, Target, and Sears. CurrentC reportedly works with existing checkout terminals, while Apple Pay requires merchants to purchase new equipment to communicate with the NFC chip in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+. Both Rite Aid and CVS are among those that don’t need to buy new equipment, so their decision to shut off the service is reported to be likely as solidarity with the other retailers.

Schmidt discusses the impact of mobile technology in the world, and the competition between Apple and Google, in a “Bloomberg TV” interview.

Ten years ago, nobody in our audience was sitting with a mobile phone next to their bed. The internet access was largely in people’s offices and occasionally in homes. The internet has helped improving connectivity. This connectivity and mobile revolution has changed everything.

Owners of the new iPhone 6 Plus are angry as it emerges 1411522810776_wps_9_It_has_been_revealed_thatthe phone can bend out of shape simply when stored in a pocket. Since the new model launch, a small but growing number of iPhone 6 Plus owners have reported the issue that significantly alters the appearance of the phone. The problem, dubbed ‘Bendgate’ by some on social media sites, is due to the phone’s thin aluminium exterior – but can be solved by ensuring the middle of the phone is not subjected to a large force. A user writes:

@tim_cook hi Tim, I absolutely love my new iPhone 6 Plus!! My favorite feature is the flexible display.

Apple announces that 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus phones were sold during the first weekend of sales, breaking a company record for sales. The figures for the two devices are not broken out, but the  iPhone 6 Plus has been more difficult to find at retailers. Two years ago, over 2 million iPhone5 preorders were recorded within the first 24 hours, and the sales for the first weekend totaled 5 million. Last year, the first time Apple offered two iPhone models, the company sold 9 million iPhone 5S and 5C phones during the first weekend they were in stores. The figures for the two devices are not broken out, but the  iPhone 6 Plus has been more difficult to find at retailers. iOS 8 will protect information from police

The new encryption in iOS 8 will no longer allow the company to bypass a user’s password to access their account data. Even if police present a search warrant, text messages, emails, photos and other data can not be accessed and turned over to them. Apple says:

So it’s not technically feasible for us to respond to government warrants for the extraction of this data from devices in their possession running iOS 8.

Information protection disappears if customers back up the information on their phone and copy it to the iCloud service, because Apple will comply with warrants to turn over information on its servers. Likewise, if users sync their iPhone with iTunes, backing up phone files to a computer, then police can access those files their laptop, PC or tablet without a PIN code.

iPhone 6 demand challenges supplier

Apple supplier Foxconn hires more workers for its factory in Zhengzhou, China to help meet the huge demand for the new phones. The Wall Street Journal reports that more than 200,000 Foxconn workers are stationed at the Zhengzhou factory with the sole job of assembling the new iPhones and some of its key components. The plant is operating 100 production lines 24 hours a day to keep up with demand. A person familiar with the matter tells The Wall Street Journal:

We have been churning out 140,000 iPhone 6 Plus and 400,000 iPhone 6 every day, the highest daily output ever, but the volume is still not enough to meet the preorders. For iPhone 6 Plus, we are still ramping up the production line. Another reason for the limited supply is the shortage of 5.5-inch displays.
