The Outlaw Josey Wales

In this self-directed post-Civil War era western Eastwood plays Josey Wales, a farmer. One day his farm is attacked and his family killed. Wales embarks off on a journey of revenge against the men who did it. He finds himself out West and obligated to help a group of vulnerable pioneers find their way to their destination. Co-starring Chief Dan George, Sondra Locke and Paula Trueman.

I think I appeal to the escapism in people – the characters I play… I like those characters myself; that’s why, maybe, I carry them to other extremes than my predecessors… A man who thinks on a very simple level and has very simple moral values, appeals to a great many people.

Alice in Wonderland

In this family fantasy adventure based on the classic book of the same name and directed by Tim Burton, Depp plays the Mad Hatter. The Hatter befriends Alice and accompanies her on her adventures through Wonderland and helps her to find her way to complete her quest. Co-starring Helena Bonham Carter, Mia Wasikowska, Crispin Glover, and Anne Hathaway.

There’s one person, in particular, who is the main ingredient for the Hatter and if I said who it was they’d probably be upset. It’s someone I came into contact with and was fascinated by the way this person spoke. And I knew then, when I met the person, that I was going to sponge off them as much as I could, and use them one day as a character. And I did.

Eastwood plays Jed Cooper in this western directed by Ted Post. Cooper is a hard working cattleman who is mistaken for a cattle rustler and hanged on the spot despite his claims of innocence. He somehow manages to survive the hanging and sets on a path of revenge when he is given the opportunity to become a Marshall and have the law behind his quest. Also starring Inger Stevens and Pat Hingle. Post on teaching Eastwood to use props:

I said, well, get his attention.  But he can’t get his attention – he was smoking.  So I said well all right, here’s what we’ll do.  See the cigarette in his mouth?  Take the cigarette out of his mouth and put it into his drink – that will get his attention.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Il buono, Il brutto, Il cattivo is the Italian title of the third installment of Sergio Leone’s spaghetti western trilogy surrounding the Man with No Name. Eastwood plays Blondie, a Civil War veteran and bounty hunter looking for a payday when he runs into Tuco, a bandit and the perfect partner in a very lucrative business venture.  The two part ways, only to reunite in a scheme to find a grave loaded with treasure – that is, if it isn’t another double-cross. Also starring Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach. Wallach:

Clint Eastwood was my coach in a way. He said, ‘I’m warning you that it’s very dangerous, the way you ride your horse,’ but I’d been riding horses in Texas since the 30s, so I knew how to ride. Clint is a wonderful horseman and we got along.

A Fistful of Dollars

Eastwood plays Joe in the this first installment of the Man with No Name trilogy and first Spaghetti Western, directed by Sergio Leone. Originally released in Italy in 1964 as Per un Pugno di Dollari, Joe is a gunfighter who wanders into town and finds a chance to make a fistful of dollars playing two rival powerful families against each other, setting off a battle and saving a town from tyranny in the process. Also starring Marianne Koch and Gian Maria Volonté. Morgan Freeman on the iconic character shaping Eastwood’s career:

It’s because of the Man with No Name. He established that voice when he was doing spaghetti westerns with Sergio Leone, and he’s used it ever since. People use it when they imitate him because it’s the only voice they know. But it only comes out when you mic him up and he’s on the set and acting. And then he uses this voice and I don’t know why….

In this mystery thriller directed by the Hughes Brothers, Depp plays Inspector Frederick Abberline from Scotland Yard, a highly analytical thinker, clairvoyant, a regular user of Absinthe, who is investigating the Jack the Ripper murders. He uses clues from his visions to help him attempt to solve one of the greatest murder mysteries of all time. Co-starring Heather Graham and Ian Holm.

I’ve been fascinated by him since I was a young kid.  I jumped at the chance to do the film. It meant I could talk to some of the great Ripper-ologists and I got to wander through the area of Whitechapel at night, I loved that.

The Tourist

In this romantic action thriller directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Depp plays Frank Tupelo, a quiet American math teacher on vacation in Italy. Tupelo barely sets foot in Italy when he meets Elise, an extremely beautiful and mysterious spy. Before he knows it, Tupelo is fully involved in cat and mouse spy games worthy of a novel. Co-starring Angelina Jolie and Timothy Dalton.

The idea was to make him seem the Everyman, this math teacher who doesn’t have particular highs or lows in his life. He has a slight amount of obsessive-compulsive disorder in his weird routines. The idea was to take this normal guy and put him into these situations that are certainly less than normal. High stakes situations.

In this animated action comedy directed by Gore Verbinski, Depp voices Rango, a regular house-chameleon who is involved in an accident and finds himself alone in the desert.  He stumbles upon a town of animals who are living in the grips of a tyrant. Rango finds himself stepping up to be “that guy” just like the classic western cowboy would to save the day. Co-starring Isla Fisher, Ned Beatty and Timothy Olyphant.

They actually call me the Lizard King, my children, they do. I force them to address me like that. [laughs] It was an odd sort of thing. ‘Where you going, Daddy?’ I gotta go to work. ‘Well, what are you doing?’ Well, I’m playing a lizard. You drop your kids off at school and give them a kiss, and now I gotta go be a lizard.

Depp plays Barnabas Collins in this horror comedy directed by Tim Burton. Collins is a vampire who has been buried for over 100 years. He awakens in the 1970s and moves into his former home, helping his descendants fight to keep the family and the estate safe from evil money-grubbers. Co-starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter and Bella Heathcote.

In every film that I’ve been lucky enough to do with Tim, there’s always some form of torture. The nails were Tim’s idea. They were the length of the fingers. But, it was okay because I had a troupe of people who would help me go to the bathroom. They had to have treatment afterwards, but they’re okay now. That is true.

The Lone Ranger

In this western action-adventure directed by Gore Verbinski and loosely based on the TV series of the same name, Depp plays Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s Native American sidekick. Ranger John Reid sets out to find the men who killed his brother. Lucky for him, Tonto is there to not only help out, but to help build the legend of the Lone Ranger and keep the evil spirits at bay. Too bad tribal elders say that Tonto has “left the reservation” and should never be trusted with someone’s life. Co-starring Armie Hammer and William Fitchner.

I can remember very well as a little kid, seeing the series on TV. You know, the black and white series with Clayton Moore and the great Jay Silverheels.  As a very young child, I was always perturbed by the idea of Tonto being a sidekick… I just thought it was potentially an opportunity to right the wrong. I think it’s great that Tonto makes The Lone Ranger. I think it’s a very poetic way that he creates The Lone Ranger, and I think it’s right, finally.

In this sci-fi thriller based on the Michael Crichton novel and directed by Stephen Spielberg, Goldblum plays Dr. Ian Malcolm, a research scientist who is brought to a new amusement park filled with live dinosaurs. One of several scientists asked there to provide their recommendations and praise, instead they must fight for their lives. Co-starring Sam Neil and Laura Dern.

In the T-Rex attack, they had him run away from the dinosaurs, like the other guy who gets eaten, and I said ‘Please Steven’ and we cooked up this other version where I get to be heroic, you know? I thought if I was going to run, that’s a terrible thing to do. You’re going to want to see me die. I’m going to want to see me die.

Sleepy Hollow

Depp plays Ichabod Crane in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Washington Irving’s classic story. Crane is an investigator from the city sent to investigate a string of decapitations in a neighboring village.  What he finds are townsfolk convinced that the Headless Horseman is the culprit. It’s up to Crane to discover what is really happening before more villagers lose their heads. Co-starring Christina Ricci, Michael Gambon.

I was sort of doing Snoopy dances thinking I was going to get to wear a long nose and big ears. The classic Ichabod Crane from the book — Washington Irving’s description is really beautifully written — (included) a long, sliding nose, huge ears; and (Irving) talks about his hands being very far away from his body, and long feet. So, yeah. I did want to do that.

Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

In this musical thriller directed by Tim Burton, Depp plays Sweeney Todd, an insane barber who seeks revenge for the loss of his beloved, and gets it easily as soon as the victim sits in his barber chair. After killing the hapless souls, they are sent to the neighbor lady, Mrs. Lovett, to be made into her amazingly popular meat pies. The two grow closer as she tries to win his attentions, until Todd discovers her dark deeds and the night explodes into violence. Co-starring Helena Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman.

I’d seen the more recent production of it and then just thought it might be, you know certainly a great opportunity to, to try to find a, a new Sweeney, a different Sweeney. Just like a little contemporary in the sense of like also the punk rock Sweeney you know.

In this western, Eastwood directs and plays “The Stranger,” a man who agrees to help townspeople who are being terrorized by out-of-control brothers. Starring Verna Bloom and Marianna Hill. Who The Stranger is to him:

To me he was the brother.  But I presented him…  The way the whole town was, no children, kind of strange:  it’s a weird situation.  As far as me justifying the role, he was the brother.  But as far as the audience is concerned, if they want to draw him as something a little more than that, that’s fine.
