Announces bid for congressional seat

Runs for Office0 Comments

Gilbert announces that she is running for Congress. She is running as a Democrat, hoping to unseat Bishop in Michigan’s 8th district.

I’m running for Congress to make life a little easier for all the families who feel they have fallen through the cracks in today’s economy. I believe building a new economy is a team effort, and we need to bring fresh voices to the table to get the job done.

Announces retirement

Retirement0 Comments

Clarke announces that he will retire from international cricket after the fifth test of the Ashes, a series the Australian Cricket Team has already lost.

I don’t feel sad, I’m more disappointed or sad with the way we played through this series and the way I played as captain. That’s the most disappointing part. I’m not sad about this being the right time to walk away, because I believe it’s the right time. I believe I’ve been blessed to have the career I’ve had. I’ve played over 100 Test matches for my country I’ve been a part of some amazing teams…We’ve won more than we lost so that’s a nice feeling and I’ve been lucky enough to captain Australia as well, so I’m extremely thankful to all of my team-mates and all the people that have helped me firstly make it into the Australian team and then help me have the success I’ve had, I’ve always said cricket owes me nothing, I owe it everything and I still believe that.

‘The perfect day’

Personal Best0 Comments

Broad comments on his career best performance which led to the Australian Cricket Team being bowled out for 60 before lunch on the first day of their test match against England:

Without doubt that is the best day’s cricket I’ve been a part of. To have a 214-run lead after day one is probably as powerful a performance as I’ve ever seen and certainly been involved in. It was just one of those days that you dream of, home ground, picking up 300 Test wickets and then a career best. It’s been the perfect day for us, but we start again on day two.

Of his own performance:

It has not really sunk in. I see the scoreboard on the ground and it doesn’t seem real, it was a bit of a freak day really, but it is what you work hard for and what you train for.

Fastest five wicket haul

Personal Best0 Comments

Broad takes a career best eight wickets while conceding only 15 runs. He takes five wickets with his first 19 balls, the fastest five wicket haul taken from the start of a Test innings. The Australian team is dismissed for 60.

Stonewall interview

Interview0 Comments

Emmerich discusses the difficulties he faced in filming the gay rights drama Stonewall:

It was a huge challenge to make this movie, and if I had not absolutely wanted it, it would not have happened… It was an uphill battle, but we finally did it.

The film is shot in Montreal.

We wanted to do it in New York on location, and that failed miserably because it was so expensive.

Of the diverse crowd the film depicts:

I think we represented it very well. We have drag queens, lesbians, we have everything in the film because we wanted to portray a broader image of what ‘gay’ means.

Aiken discusses Trump

Makes Statement0 Comments

Aiken says people should not count Trump out:

I don’t think anybody should discount him. Nobody thought that we would see him in the position he is in right now. He is certainly the frontrunner with no signs of that fading… I think he has a really great opportunity — even if he doesn’t win the Republican nomination — to do something I think the country has needed for a long time, which is to try to break this stranglehold of the two-party system. I kind of hope he decides to stick with it and maybe give people another option outside of the Republicans and Democrats.

Walker surprised by allegations

Makes Statement0 Comments

Walker expresses surprise that Cosby drugged women:

I actually thought that everybody knew about all these women… The thing that shocks me the most is the drugging because the times that I’ve worked with Cosby … [I witnessed] nothing with the drug thing. But the women, I knew about that.

He also says:

I love Bill Cosby. The thing that upsets me the most is that we’re never going to see his work again because he’s gone forever and ever, and it’s unfortunate.

Cosby producer breaks silence

Makes Statement0 Comments

Werner speaks about Cosby and his legacy:

The legacy of the show is obviously very important to me because the show was a groundbreaking show and it portrayed a middle-class African-American family in a very positive way. It had a lot of stories that resonated with families because people watched it together. Obviously it’s a challenging time for Bill Cosby and a challenging time for the show, but I’m hoping that people will still be able to watch the show and identify with the Huxtables.

Cecil, Jericho not related

Makes Statement0 Comments

Contrary to earlier reports, MacDonald, director of the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at Oxford, says Jericho is not the brother of Cecil the Lion.

They were not related, though their bond was one close to brotherhood. Male lions often form what are termed co-operative ‘coalitions’ with unrelated males in order to better compete with other males for territories and prides.

Jericho is currently caring for and defending Cecil’s cubs.

Jericho confirmed alive

Rodrigues retracts his previous statement and confirms that reports of Jericho’s death were a case of mistaken identity. As proof of life, Oxford University tweets photo of Jericho taken by researcher Stapelkamp:

Zimbabwe bans hunting

Law approved0 Comments

Following the outrage over the killing of Cecil the Lion by Palmer, Zimbabwe bans the hunting of lions, leopards and elephants in the area frequently used by hunters. Bow and arrow hunts are also suspended unless hunters are approved by the National Parks and Wildlife Authority. The Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe stands to lose business $40 million a year from a ban.

Jericho feared dead, actually alive

Makes Statement0 Comments

It is feared that Jericho, brother of Cecil the Lion, has been shot dead by poachers in Zimbabwe. Rodrigues, Chairman for Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, says:

It is with great sadness and regret that we report that Jericho was shot dead at 4pm this afternoon. We are absolutely heartbroken. We have no further details but will advise as soon as we know more.

However later reports indicate that the GPS on the lion is still moving, leading others to believe that a different lion has been killed.
