Mourned, elevated as goddess

Tribute0 Comments

Tama is mourned by company officials and fans and elevated into a goddess at her funeral. In a portrait decorating the altar, Tama poses in a stationmaster’s hat and a dark blue cape. Sake, as well as watermelon, apples, cabbage and other fruits and vegetables are presented to the cat. Wakayama Electric Railway President Mitsunobu Kojima thanks the cat for her achievement:

Tama-chan really emerged like a savior, a goddess. It was truly my honor to have been able to work with her.

Investigators smuggle weapons in 95% of trials

A TSA internal investigation reveals security failures where investigators were able to smuggle mock explosives and weapons through checkpoints in 95 percent of trials. In one test by the TSA’s Red Team, an undercover agent was stopped after setting off an alarm at a magnetometer, but TSA screeners failed to detect a fake explosive device that was taped to his back during a follow-on pat down. The review determines that the TSA failed to make any noticeable improvement since 2009 despite spending $551 million for equipment and training since 2009. DHS statement:

Upon learning the initial findings of the Office of Inspector General’s report, Secretary Johnson immediately directed TSA to implement a series of actions, several of which are now in place, to address the issues raised in the report.

Upset over proposed reforms

Introduces Bill0 Comments

NYC police are upset over several police reform measures City Council members plan to review, including bills that would force cops to get suspects’ consent for searches, imprison police for using chokeholds, and require cops to give out the Civilian Complaint Review Board’s phone number. Police Benevolent Association:

These pieces of legislation have been proposed by individuals who have neither the expertise nor the experience to establish policy in the dangerous business of fighting crime. Policing policies must be left to the police management who understand the intricacies and difficulties of complex legal issues and the appropriate use of crime-fighting tactics.

Google appeal on Oracle suit denied

Judgement0 Comments

The Court denies a Google appeal that sought to stop a billion-dollar Oracle lawsuit by seeking limits on software copyright protections. The justices decline to disturb an appeals court ruling in Oracle’s favor that reinvigorated the company’s case against Google. 37 packages of prewritten Java programs, known as application programming interfaces, are entitled to copyright protection. Google:

We will continue to defend the interoperability that has fostered innovation and competition in the software industry.

Oracle:

[The result] is a win for innovation and for the technology industry that relies on copyright protection to fuel innovation.
