Phillip Hughes dies age 25

Death0 Comments

Hughes dies in hospital without regaining consciousness. Hughes had remained in an induced coma at St Vincent’s hospital after having emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. According to a statement from the Australian team doctor, Peter Brukner he was not in pain and was surrounded by his family and close friends.

As a cricket community we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time. Cricket Australia kindly asks that the privacy of the Hughes family, players and staff be respected.

Clarke pays tribute to deceased team-mate Phillip Hughes, saying no-one epitomized the spirit of the Baggy Green more than the 25-year-old batsman.

The world lost one of its great blokes this week and we are all poorer for it. Our promise to Hughes’s family is that we will do everything we can to honour his memory. Last night I asked Cricket Australia if Hughes’s Australian one-day international shirt number, 64, could be retired, to which they agreed. That means so much. His legacy of trying to improve each and every day will drive us for the rest of our lives. We’d like to thank everyone, both here and overseas, for the touching tributes to Hughesy in recent days. Our dressing room will never be the same. We loved him, and always will. Rest in peace, Brussy.

There Will Be Blood

In this period drama directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, Lewis plays Daniel Plainview, a miner who finds oil in his mine and beocmes a ruthless oil baron. His relations with his son and a local preacher deteriorate as he gains more weatlh and power. Co-starring Paul Dano.

The challenge always seems to be the same thing, to tell a story as well as you can. To whatever extent I’m able to assess my contribution at the very beginning, having felt the pull of the orbit of another world, I try to step backwards and ask myself if I can serve that story as the person I’m going to be telling that story with. I try to do that, but I think I’m usually already too far gone anyhow. It’s a token gesture rather than a real one.

Lewis plays Guido Contini, who is a gifted Italian filmmaker who, at the age of fifty, has developed writer’s block and urges all the women in his life to help him with his unfinished set, where dozens of dancers and the film’s leading ladies appear. This musical drama film directed by Rob Marshall. Co-starring Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, Fergie, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren.

I kind of climb in time to the music. That luckily was something that Rob didn’t try and convince either himself or me of — that he’d found a dancer. So he worked around that, in my case. I was quite relieved that I could concentrate on the music. And I had the great pleasure watching day by day the rehearsals … of the girls.

Lincoln

Lewis plays President Abraham Lincoln, who expects the Civil War to end within a month and once the war has concluded, the Thirteenth Amendment be defeated by the returning slave states. This historical drama is directed by Steven Spielberg. Co-starring Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook, Tommy Lee Jones.

I know I’m not Abraham Lincoln. I’m aware of that. But the truth is the entire game is about creating an illusion, and for whatever reason, and mad as it may sound, some part of me can allow myself to believe for a period for time without questioning, and that’s the trick.

McConaughey plays Lieutenant Andrew Tyler, a young naval officer, passed over to captain his own submarine, forced, through dire circumstances, to make some hard choices and learn about leadership. This war drama is directed by Jonathan Mostow. Co-starring Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, Thomas Kretschmann, Jon Bon Jovi.

Subjectively speaking, I wanted to do this film because of the character whom I liked a lot. I wanted to play a leader of men, that heroic character. I wanted to go be ‘the man’, take care of business and get physical.

McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, who is diagnosed with AIDS and given 30 days to live. He initially refuses to accept the diagnosis, but after being ostracized by family and friends, fired from his job, and evicted from his home, he sets out to help other victims get off-label drugs that will keep them alive. This biographical drama is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and co-stars Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto.

When that came out, remember, no one knew about the disease or where it came from. Everyone thought it was a homosexual disease. This guy gets it; he thought he had a flu, a bug he can’t kick. He took his life into his own hands and really pioneered progressive research into unapproved vitamins and drugs that the FDA wasn’t letting into America for people with HIV to take at the time. It’s a wonderful story told from an original point of view. I haven’t seen the subject matter told from the point of view of a heterosexual man.

McConaughey plays Mike Lane, who has big plans for a business of his own but pays his bills through a series of odd jobs, most notably performing as the star stripper at Xquisite Strip Club in Tampa, in this comedy drama directed by Steven Soderbergh. Co-starring Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Cody Horn, Matt Bomer, Olivia Munn, and Joe Manganiello.

The character was a wonderful capitalist. He was a hardcore capitalist. My mind worked a lot in preparation of this character, in terms of what’s going to make the most money. How are we going to entertain these women for two hours? The music has to be on cue, the lighting, the intros, exits, keep the show going. We’re not going to do any of that goofy stuff with dwarfs coming out. No one is going to be running out with big dildos sticking out of their thongs.

Mud

In this drama-thriller directed by Jeff Nichols. McConaughey plays Mud, who is hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud befriends two boys and describes fantastic scenarios-he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. Co-starring Resse Witherspoon, and Samp Shepard.

There have been characters I’ve met, and most of them probably being in the rural South [who] had little, you know … bits of knowledge like Mud, but nobody as fully committed and with a full constitution like Mud. I mean, Mud, if he ever came to the so-called mainland and got off of the proverbial island and was sort of reined in by civilization, I don’t think he’d survive. So he’s really getting his knowledge from the stars, from the river, from Mother Nature — and that’s one of the great things about the South. [It’s] inevitable that’s where you’re gaining your knowledge of how the world works, because you’re just engrossed in the middle of Mother Nature.

You wanna see a guy get in shape, tell him his (butt) is going to be 40-foot-high on a screen. It’s me doing everything with the spray tans and all. It’s going to be a hoot.

Killer Joe

McConaughey plays Joe Cooper, a police detective who has a side career as a contract killer will do the job for an upfront fee, that Chris (Emile Hirsch) and Ansel (Thomas Haden Church) can’t pay. Joe offers to take Chris’ younger sister Dottie (Juno Temple) as a “retainer” until the insurance comes through. This action drama is directed by William Friedkin and co-stars Gina Gershon.

Joe is like a black panther.Every movement is deliberate, minimal. Never really exposing light, not out to really define himself, not out to help you understand who he is, not out to ‘let’s keep this conversation rolling.’ Not out to make friends.

Bernie

In this comedy drama is directed by Richard Linklater, McConaughey plays Danny Buck Davidson, a local district attorney, who charges Tiede (Jack Black) with first-degree murder, accused of killing Nugent (Shirley MacLaine).

I started with Bernie and then talked to Scrappy (the defense attorney) as well. Jack wanted to meet Bernie so we facilitated that. I went to the trial about 15 years ago. I was into it back then. I wanted to see him testify. So yeah, it’s tricky when you do something that’s based on real events, real people. You know, I was concerned about the families and you try to be as accurate as you possibly can.

The Lincoln Lawyer

In this legal thriller, directed by Brad Furman, McConaughey plays Mickey Haller, who represents a high-profile client on charges of attempted murder. But as new evidence continues to pile on, Haller starts to grow suspicious that perhaps his client isn’t telling him everything. Co-starring Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillippe, Josh Lucas, John Leguizamo, Michael Peña, Bryan Cranston, and William H. Macy.

The whole script had movement, in its simplest form, for the mobile office. The Lincoln had such great entrances and exits from scenes. Open up, the Lincoln pulls in, he gets out. It’s a great segue-way. It’s literally a vehicle for segue-ways. That was something true about these guys who do what he does. They don’t stop. Everything is moving, like a dance. They’ve always got a few things going. They have a dexterity that is always on the move.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

McConaughey plays Benjamin Barry, an advertising executive who wants to get the account for a diamond company. He bets he could make any woman fall in love with him if he wanted to before the upcoming company ball, in just 10 days. This romantic comedy film is directed by Donald Petrie. Co-starring Kate Hudson, Adam Goldberg, Bebe Neuwirth.

I do love women. Ben loves women. That was a great perspective of his that he believed and that I buy. Part of that’s not objectifying them. Ben does it in that line where he says, “Well, that sounds cocky.” No, it’s confident. Why? Because, like he says, “Whether they’re eight years old, 35 years old or my 88-year-old grandmother, I love women. Mother nature, mermaids, the white buffalo. All women.” It’s a wonderful sex, man. One that we’re never going to figure out. That’s for damn sure.

Co-starring Jenna Elfman, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Hurley, Dennis Hopper, Ellen DeGeneres, Rob Reiner, Martin Landau, and Sally Kirkland.

I was ready to go to a weekend character. This is the lighter side of things. You know, my research was my Friday and Saturday nights with my friends, having a good time, and all of a sudden laughing at something and writing down what we laughed at and going, ‘What if that’s Ed’s sense of humor?

McConaughey plays Tripp, a 35-year-old man, who is still living with his parents Al (Terry Bradshaw) and Sue (Kathy Bates).  His parents hire an expert, Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker), who builds up his confidence and transfers his attachment from his parents to her and later on developing real feelings for him. This romantic comedy film is directed by Tom Dey. Co-starring  Zooey Deschanel, Justin Bartha, Bradley Cooper.

I wanted to find a way for Tripp’s character to move forward. He’s living at home. His parents think he’s got this ‘problem,’ but he thinks he’s got it figured out. Life’s good. ‘I love my parents, they love me. I’ve got great friends, I’m a good friend to ‘em. Rent’s paid. Mom’s a great cook, folds the clothes. What’s not to like?’ And one of the other reasons you discover he’s staying home deals with the loss of his fiance in the past. All of it gives him a dignified, lighthearted way to move forward.
