While working on the tv miniseries To The End of the Earth, the actor is driving with two friends in South Africa, just north of Durban. Their car blows a tire and the trio steps out to attempt to put on the spare when six armed men surround them. They are forced onto their knees with their hands behind their heads. They are bound and put back into the car. When Cumberbatch complains that his bindings are too tight and cutting off circulation, his captors force him into the trunk of the car. However, after arguing with them that he has a heart condition and could die in the trunk of the car, they let him back out. After driving a distance, his captors dump him and his friends from the car and leave. Eventually they are rescued by a passing stranger.
It taught me that you come into thus world as you leave it, on your own. It’s made me want to live a life less ordinary. It really, really enriches your values in life. It’s incredibly important.
