In response to the Christmas Day attacks, Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan declares a state of emergency in the states of Plateau, Niger and Yobe, as well as in parts of Borno state. Security forces will have more powers to seal off international border crossings and conduct searches and arrests. The president also asks the armed forces to create a special anti-terrorism unit.
