Mohammed Yusuf dies in police custody after the group launches attacks in Borno, Yobe and Kano states; allegedly, Yusuf was trying to escape. More than 300 group members die while attacking several police stations. Referring to criticisms that authorities hadn’t cracked down earlier on the group because some of its members come from rich families with political connections, a local journalist says:
People believe the government didn’t want to crack down on these people because their parents would get angry. But now it is becoming a monster, the government has realized it has made a mistake and the earlier they deal with these people, the better.
