Takes majority ownership
The NBA approves Jordan’s bid of $275 million to buy the Bobcats from majority owner Johnson. Jordan will assume about $150 million in debt in the deal. He becomes the second black majority owner of a major pro sports team.
Purchasing the Bobcats is the culmination of my post-playing career goal of becoming a majority owner of an NBA franchise. Walker comments on what position he thinks he will play for the Charlotte Bobcats:
I think I’ll be playing a lot of point. Since it’s me and D.J., we are both small guys and we’ll play together. I think it’ll be a situation like was in college. … Whoever gets the ball, push it, or whoever’s having the best offensive night plays the 2. Like that. It’s going to switch, so I’ll be playing both.
