The Martian

Damon stars as astronaut Mark Watney in this science-fiction drama directed by Ridley Scott, based on the book by Andy Weir. Watney, mistakenly left for dead on Mars, has to survive for four years with only limited food, oxygen and other supplies. Co-starring Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig and Sean Bean.

When we made the movie, we had to go through step by step. He [Watney] is very logical and practical and methodical in how he goes about surviving. He says, essentially, ‘I need air, water, and food, and what do I need to do to ensure I have those things?’ And then kind of lets the science bring you there.

Black Mass interview

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cooper talks about Depp’s performance as Bulger in Black Mass. To re-create Bulger’s intimidating style and persona, Cooper and Depp pored over surveillance tapes and old FBI photographs. Cooper says of Bulger:

He could be charming. He could be ruthless. He was like a cobra – you never knew where he could strike…He murdered him in front of numerous witnesses in broad daylight. In a word, Whitey was brazen.

Of Depp:

A lot of people on set knew Whitey intimately. They got chills at the resemblance. Some of them couldn’t even look at him… It’s easy to be the mustache twirling villain but this performance couldn’t be further from that. He is truly gifted.

James plays himself, in his acting debut, in Judd Apatow’s comedy, Trainwreck. The film co-stars Amy Schumer and Bill Hader. When told he will play himself:

I can just show up, I’m LeBron, I’ll play basketball, and shoot some jumpers, I can dunk. And it was like ‘uh no, you’re actually going to be Bill’s best friend in the movie.’ And I’m like ‘so that means I’m going to have … lines?

Mr. Holmes

McKellen stars as a 93-year-old Holmes who is now a recluse, slowly succumbing to senility. The film co-stars Milo Parker, Laura Linney and Hattie Morahan and is directed by Bill Condon.

There was no problem with Sherlock Holmes once we got the look right. It was the same with Gandalf. Once we got the look, once I looked in the mirror and saw, “Oh! There he is.” It was then very easy to, with imagination, say, ‘The man who looks like that talks like this. The man who talks like this walks like this.’ It’s, sort of, in the DNA.

Lila & Eve

Lopez stars in this movie about two mothers who set out to take revenge after the son of Lila (Viola Davis) is killed in a drive-by shooting. The film is written by Pat Gilfillan and directed by Charles Stone III.

I think with Eve’s character, being a mom, understanding what it is to love a child, all of that was stuff I understood as well. I always try to pick parts where I can really contribute the emotional weight that the character requires. I’ve never lost a child, thank God. To love a child is to understand what it could be to go through something like this.

Davis stars in this movie about Lila, a single mother whose son Stephon is killed in a drive-by shooting. When the police show little enthusiasm for solving the case, she joins a group of grieving mothers, where she connects with Eve (Jennifer Lopez), who has suffered a similar loss. The two set out to take revenge. The film is written by Pat Gilfillan and directed by Charles Stone III.

I completely drew on being a parent, and so did Jennifer. I have a friend, Julie Norris, who in 1988 lost a child to murder. She was a 7-year-old and she was playing in her grandma’s backyard in the middle of the day with her brothers and sisters and cousin. And her body was found and she’d been beaten, raped and strangled, and they found no clothes on her body. So I’ve been speaking to Julie as I was putting the project together. I always wanted to start from a place that’s real. The screenwriter spent two years with mothers of murdered children, and as a result, the experience felt like it was conveyed in a realistic way.

I’ve seen a little in looping. I hope it’s good. I really don’t know. I really wish I could tell you. I’m praying that it’s – I mean, it’s gonna be hard to live up to the first one. The first one’s pretty damn good. This one’s gonna be in 3D though, I can tell you that.

Mad Max: Fury road

In this adventure directed by George Miller based on a book by Brendan McCarthy, Nick Lathauris and Miller, Hardy plays Max a man of action and few words trying to restore order in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken. Costarring Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Josh Helman, Zoe Kravitz and Rosie Huntington.

When I got over the initial jubilation and excitement I suddenly realised that Mad Max is synonymous with Mel Gibson. If it’s not Mel it’s not Mad Max, and that was a little bit daunting and possibly people were going to dislike the change

Avengers: Age of Ultron

In this action film directed by Joss Whedon, based on a book by Whedon, Downey plays Tony Stark/Iron Man, whose attempt to create a peace-keeping program goes awry, resulting in the rise of Ultron, a psychopathic computer-robot hybrid. The Avengers unite to save the planet. Co starring Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlet Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner.

You never want to lean on things that you did knowing that it was like a back-up parachute. You don’t want to pretend there’s a back-up to that back-up parachute. And yesterday’s approach doesn’t necessarily work today. That’s what I really enjoy – that double sliding scale Spock Chess thing. How do you do it? How did you ever do it? How did you do it before, and how are you going to do it next time? I think, ultimately, it comes down to the very self-deprecating Mr. Whedon, who is more exacting on himself than he could ever be on anyone else. But he’s specific and in charge and I found him enjoying himself a bit more this time while simultaneously holding himself to a higher standard. You can’t do the same thing, only smaller, not as cool. There’s that other trap – where it’s, “Everything is bigger! Better! Do you know how many gigabytes we used in the opening sequence? How many terabytes?” Ultimately it comes down to that.

In this superhero movie based on characters created by Marvel Comics, Johansson portrays Black Widow, a highly trained spy. She and her fellow avengers stop villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plans. Co-starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner.

People were surprised that I wanted to play a comic book heroine. But I loved Iron Man, and I met with Marvel to see what was possible. I had done my research, and the Black Widow character resonated with me. She is dark and has faced death so many times that she has a deep perspective on the value of life. In the sequel, you learn more about the sadness in her past.

In this Sci-Fi directed by Alex Garland, Vikander plays the role of Ava, an artificial intelligence female who befriends a young computer programmer Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) after they’re introduced by his mysterious CEO Nathan (Oscar Isaac). The movie co-stars Corey Johnson, Domhall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac. Vikander on challenges faced in playing Ava:

It was difficult because in the script, which tends to be a very difficult thing about scripts, there weren’t many stage directions. So when I read it I didn’t really know what Ava looked like, what she was or anything. My self-taped audition I did is a very different Ava.

Vin Diesel plays Dominic Toretto, in this crime thriller by James Wan. After Deckard (Jason Statham) starts killing the crew members, in revenge for the death of his brother, the team reunites to fight him, and discover he is trying to steal a technological device so they can turn it into a weapon. Co-starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson. On performing with Walker’s brothers:

It is a very difficult thing for an actor to both mourn, and also have to pretend that the person is still there. It made the experience that much more arduous. It was very tricky. It was the hardest film I’ve ever done.

Lipovsky directs this horror movie about a group of people living in a world controlled and dominated by zombies. They are living in fear and trying to survive in a life crisis that seems impossible for them to win back what they have lost. C0-starring Jesse Metcalfe, Meghan Ory and Virginia Madson.

I really like the tone of the game. It’s definitely got its dark scary beats, but ultimately it’s an adventure film. Every time I get scared or laugh while playing, I make a note to add it to the script. Tonally it will be like “Indiana Jones with Zombies.” Fun, scary, dramatic action.

The Forger

In the heist film directed by Philip Martin, Travolta plays the role of an art forger who must forge a painting by Claude Monet for a crime syndicate who plan to steal it from a museum, so he can secure an early release from prison. Co-starring Marcus Thomas, Abigail Spencer and Travis Aaron Wayde. On learning to paint:

I went to Hong Kong, and I studied with a famous instructor there, and then in the US with another gentleman. I had studied watercolour years ago because I loved Hopper, Edward Hopper, and my grandfather was a painter, and my brother paints. I  took it up as well. But I really wanted to understand what a forger might feel he has to do to duplicate that.

In this comedy directed by Ken Scott, based on a book by Steven Conrad, Vaughn plays a small business owner travelling to Europe with his associates to close the most important deal of their lives. Co-starring Dave Franco, Tom Wilkinson, Sienna Miller,James Marsden and Nick Frost. About his character:

It’s easy to make the guy sort of be kind of incompetent but what I think is cool is that the character is actually a guy who, yes, he has his challenges, but he’s a competent guy facing those challenges which makes it more interesting

Chappie

In this drama directed by Neill Blomkamp, Copley plays Chappie a droid that feels and thinks for himself. The authorities see him as danger to human kind and want to make sure he is the last of his kind. Co-starring Hugh Jackman, Siguorney Weaver, Yolandi Visser and David Patel.

I think we’re finding our stride now on this third film, sort of going back to a smaller style of filmmaking. I’m doing the lead again… I’m playing a light character… A child-like robot, which is great. He only gets to about nine years in his emotional development. I got to run around in one of the most dangerous cities in the world being a child. It was awesome.

Co-starring: Robbie Margot, Rodrigo Santoro, Adrian Martinez and B.D Wong.

You can’t create chemistry, you either have it or your don’t. It was pretty instantaneous. The second she walked in I was like, “Uh huh…” It was really palpable. I’ve never used that word in public before – that felt good! It was the correct usage, right? Ok, it was palpable!
