Straight Outta Compton

In this drama directed by Grey, O’Shea Jackson plays as Ice Cube who revolutionizes hip-hop in the mid-80s by forming NWA in the streets of Compton. Co-starring Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins, Paul Giamatti, Andrea Berloff.

There’s a humanity to the story that you wouldn’t normally associate with this genre of music. That was important to me. I want you to get to know the guys behind the tracks, behind the lyrics and beats, and get a sense of them as human beings. That’s what makes this special, because you can’t just google “N.W.A.” and get these details. You can’t experience the brotherhood that you experience in the movie by going on to Wikipedia.

Fathers and Daughters

In this drama film directed by Muccino, Russell Crowe plays a father who struggles with his mental breakdown and his grown daughter (Amanda Seyfried) trying to make it on her own and not being influenced by her father’s past. Co-starring Aaron Paul and Diane Kruger.

This kind of movie for me is not only a source of stimulus, but also of concern. It means to gather to compete in a very narrow market of film, no more than four or five per year that will reach the largest audience. Many films are destined to remain at the edge of the market because people do not usually rush to see a drama.

Ant-Man

Reed directs this action film, based on the Marvel comic book. Paul Rudd plays Scott Lang, a con-man whose super-suit gives him the ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength. Lang must must help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Co-starring Evangeline Lilly and Hayley Atwell. Co-writer Adam McKay:

Peyton is really, really wonderful, and will be proving that soon enough. As I said to the Comic-Con audience a few years ago, ‘You might not have heard of [Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors] Joe and Antony Russo, but you’re going to be big fans of them soon.’ And I’d say the same thing about Peyton Reed now.

Sex Metal Barbie

Music Video0 Comments

In This Moment releases the video for Sex Metal Barbie. Brink:

Directing it was a liberating experience. When you write music that you are very passionate about, being able to bring the visual aspect of it alive with the music is what ties everything together. Sex Metal Barbie is all about rising above hate. I used other people’s hatred to create this song and concepts. I really wanted this video to convey that other people’s perceptions of us are just their own twisted and warped views. I wanted a sarcastic and delusional visual to bring this video alive.

Cleveland Abduction

Kalymnios directs a Lifetime TV movie of the events of the Ariel Castro Cleveland abductions. Starring Taryn Manning, Raymond Cruz, Katie Sarife and Pam Grier.

Once I got the job on Cleveland Abduction my “what if” plan went in to action. Getting the job was, once again, very last minute but this time Sony organised my visa in anticipation of the network’s green light. I got the job on the Friday and was flown out to start the following week. My mother flew out with me and Nikita [daughter] and later my husband, Giles joined us and took over looking after Nikita.  It was a family work adventure.

Russos to direct Avengers films

The Russo brothers replace Whedon as directors for the Avengers franchise. The first movies in the series they will direct are Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 / Part 2, which will be shot all at once. Whedon had hinted that Avengers: Age of Ultron would be his final one:

I couldn’t imagine doing this again. It’s enormously hard, and it [will] be, by [the time I would make ‘Avengers 3 & 4′], a good five years since I created anything that was completely my own. So it’s very doubtful that I would take on the two-part Infinity War movie that would eat up the next four years of my life. I obviously still want to be a part of the Marvel Universe – I love these guys – but it ain’t easy. This year has been more like running three shows than any year of my life. It is bonkers.

Step Up All In

Sie directs this musical drama that brings together all stars from previous installments of STEP UP in Las Vegas to battle for victory that could define their dreams and careers. Starring Ryan Guzman, Adam G, Briana Evigan, Alyson Stoner, and Misha Gabriel Hamilton. Asked if she had seen any of the previous movies:

I had seen all of the previous movies! Step Up 2: The Streets is my favourite, but I enjoy them all. The dancing and music never fail to deliver. And I was excited to work with so many of my own favourite characters from the series who would be returning in this all-star lineup… especially Briana Evigan (who plays Andie West), Adam Sevani (aka Moose), and Ryan Guzman.

Wish I Was Here

Braff directs and plays Bloom in a comedy drama as a struggling actor, father and husband who tries to find his identity and purpose in his life when he homeschools his kids. Co-starring Kate Hudson, Joey King, Ashley Green and Josh Gad.

It definitely taught me I want to have kids. I can’t wait to have children one day. I’m a really good uncle and I love my nieces and nephews, and I really love this young actress, Joey King, who played my daughter. She’s just so special. And, you know, just that relationship of when your child is, you know, old enough to just teach you so much, and just the idea of a young child bringing you back to possibility and hope through their young wide eyes is something that’s very intoxicating to me.

Chef

Favreau plays Casper in this drama which he also directs. Casper quits his job at a restaurant with belief that he can do better. He joins his ex-wife and son to start up a food truck. Co-stars include Robert Downey Jr., Oliver Platt, Dustin Hoffman, Sofia Vergara, Scarlett Johansson, Bobby Cannavale, John Leguizamo and Emjay Anthony.

But on this movie, I really wanted to do something where I didn’t have to check what color the hat should be or what city has the biggest rebate or what actors test the highest.

Every Secret Thing

In this mystery directed by Berg, a detective (Kevin Jones) tries to unravel the mystery of two young women responsible for an infant’s murder. Co-starring Diane Lane, Dakota Fanning, Elizabeth Banks and Laura Lippman.

I worked in broadcast journalism and print for a bit, in my early days. I just watched how the machine would take something that felt very thorough, exploring the nuances of a story, and then just chop it down to two minutes, 30 minutes before it airs. And then all the work that I did would end up on the floor.

We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks

Gibney releases documentary about the creation of Assange’s controversial website.

I thought it was an incredible David and Goliath story in the age of the internet… I initially thought it was a story about a fascinating new technology, this idea of the leaking machine. So that’s what originally motivated me. My reasons for doing the film changed as I learned more about the story.

Passion

De Palma directs this neo-noir about sexual tension, jealousy and, eventually, violence, between a boss and her protégé in an advertising agency. Rachel McAdams, Noomi Rapace, and Karoline Herfurth star.

This is a relationship picture, and the girls came in to rehearse, and we sort of watched what they did and how they played with the material, and we adjusted the script to their interaction.

The Wind Rises

Miyazaki’s final movie, The Wind Rises, is released to mixed reviews due to its controversial subject matter– Japan’s role in World War II.  The movie tells the fictionalized tale of Jiro Korikoshi, the engineer behind Japan’s most successful fighter planes during the war.

Jiro Horikoshi was the most gifted man of his time in Japan. He wasn’t thinking about weapons – really all he desired was to make exquisite planes.

Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God

Gibney releases documentary about the cover up of pedophilia in the Roman Catholic Church.

I had read a story in The New York Times about a particularly horrific abuse case involving some two hundred deaf boys who had been abused by a priest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What made the story stand out for me were the documents that were revealed as part of the investigation which led straight to the Vatican – not only to the Vatican, but to Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict. That seemed to me a story that hadn’t been told yet.

Howard Cantour.com, a short film directed by LaBeouf, premiers at the Cannes Film Festival.  The 12-minute short stars Jim Gaffigan as Howard Cantour, an internet film critic who runs a movie review website with his carefully cultivated and critical eye.

It’s really an honor to be presenting my directorial debut to this crowd. It’s really outrageous to me.

Django Unchained

Tarantino releases Django Unchained, which stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio. The story follows Django, played by Foxx, who is on a quest to free his wife from slavery with the help of Dr. King Schultz, played by Waltz.

… There’s two types of violence in this film: There’s the brutal reality that slaves lived under for … 245 years, and then there’s the violence of Django’s retribution. And that’s movie violence, and that’s fun and that’s cool, and that’s really enjoyable and kind of what you’re waiting for.

Gordon-Levitt directs and stars in this six-minute romantic silent film as the lead role of Morgan M. Morgansen. He goes on a date with his vegetarian love interest, Destiny, who is played by Lexy Hulme. Destiny is offended when he orders rabbit for dinner:

It was written by a young lady named metaphorest, and I loved her words so much that I recorded some voice-over for it, which inspired drawings, which inspired animations. There will always be a very special place in the heart of our HitRECord community for our man, Morgan M. Morgansen.

Ponyo

Miyazaki’s take on The Little MermaidPonyo, is released. The story follows the adventures of Ponyo, a half goldfish girl, as she explores life out of the sea with Sosuke, a five year-old boy.

I have always dreamed of making a film with the sea as a motif, but animating the waves is really hard, so I wasn’t able to do that up to now. I decided to change the way of animating, and had a change of thought: that the sea is actually a living thing. Of course, it took courage to draw eyes on it! But a lot of the staff thought it was interesting so I thought, “Oh, okay, it works!”
