In this drama directed by Grey, O’Shea Jackson plays as Ice Cube who revolutionizes hip-hop in the mid-80s by forming NWA in the streets of Compton. Co-starring Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins, Paul Giamatti, Andrea Berloff.
There’s a humanity to the story that you wouldn’t normally associate with this genre of music. That was important to me. I want you to get to know the guys behind the tracks, behind the lyrics and beats, and get a sense of them as human beings. That’s what makes this special, because you can’t just google “N.W.A.” and get these details. You can’t experience the brotherhood that you experience in the movie by going on to Wikipedia.
In this drama film directed by Muccino, Russell Crowe plays a father who struggles with his mental breakdown and his grown daughter (Amanda Seyfried) trying to make it on her own and not being influenced by her father’s past. Co-starring Aaron Paul and Diane Kruger.
This kind of movie for me is not only a source of stimulus, but also of concern. It means to gather to compete in a very narrow market of film, no more than four or five per year that will reach the largest audience. Many films are destined to remain at the edge of the market because people do not usually rush to see a drama.
Reed directs this action film, based on the Marvel comic book. Paul Rudd plays Scott Lang, a con-man whose super-suit gives him the ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength. Lang must must help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Co-starring Evangeline Lilly and Hayley Atwell. Co-writer Adam McKay:
Peyton is really, really wonderful, and will be proving that soon enough. As I said to the Comic-Con audience a few years ago, ‘You might not have heard of [Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors] Joe and Antony Russo, but you’re going to be big fans of them soon.’ And I’d say the same thing about Peyton Reed now.
Europa releases the trailer for Transporter Refueled, starring Skein and directed by Delamarre.
In This Moment releases the video for Sex Metal Barbie. Brink:
Directing it was a liberating experience. When you write music that you are very passionate about, being able to bring the visual aspect of it alive with the music is what ties everything together. Sex Metal Barbie is all about rising above hate. I used other people’s hatred to create this song and concepts. I really wanted this video to convey that other people’s perceptions of us are just their own twisted and warped views. I wanted a sarcastic and delusional visual to bring this video alive.
Kalymnios directs a Lifetime TV movie of the events of the Ariel Castro Cleveland abductions. Starring Taryn Manning, Raymond Cruz, Katie Sarife and Pam Grier.
Once I got the job on Cleveland Abduction my “what if” plan went in to action. Getting the job was, once again, very last minute but this time Sony organised my visa in anticipation of the network’s green light. I got the job on the Friday and was flown out to start the following week. My mother flew out with me and Nikita [daughter] and later my husband, Giles joined us and took over looking after Nikita. It was a family work adventure.
After a fourteen year absence, Spielberg returns to Warner Bros. He is pegged to direct Ready Player One.
We are thrilled to welcome Steven back to Warner Bros. We had an historic series of collaborations in the 1980s and 1990s and have wanted to bring him back for years.
The Russo brothers replace Whedon as directors for the Avengers franchise. The first movies in the series they will direct are Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 / Part 2, which will be shot all at once. Whedon had hinted that Avengers: Age of Ultron would be his final one:
I couldn’t imagine doing this again. It’s enormously hard, and it [will] be, by [the time I would make ‘Avengers 3 & 4′], a good five years since I created anything that was completely my own. So it’s very doubtful that I would take on the two-part Infinity War movie that would eat up the next four years of my life. I obviously still want to be a part of the Marvel Universe – I love these guys – but it ain’t easy. This year has been more like running three shows than any year of my life. It is bonkers.
Sie directs this musical drama that brings together all stars from previous installments of STEP UP in Las Vegas to battle for victory that could define their dreams and careers. Starring Ryan Guzman, Adam G, Briana Evigan, Alyson Stoner, and Misha Gabriel Hamilton. Asked if she had seen any of the previous movies:
I had seen all of the previous movies! Step Up 2: The Streets is my favourite, but I enjoy them all. The dancing and music never fail to deliver. And I was excited to work with so many of my own favourite characters from the series who would be returning in this all-star lineup… especially Briana Evigan (who plays Andie West), Adam Sevani (aka Moose), and Ryan Guzman.
Braff directs and plays Bloom in a comedy drama as a struggling actor, father and husband who tries to find his identity and purpose in his life when he homeschools his kids. Co-starring Kate Hudson, Joey King, Ashley Green and Josh Gad.
It definitely taught me I want to have kids. I can’t wait to have children one day. I’m a really good uncle and I love my nieces and nephews, and I really love this young actress, Joey King, who played my daughter. She’s just so special. And, you know, just that relationship of when your child is, you know, old enough to just teach you so much, and just the idea of a young child bringing you back to possibility and hope through their young wide eyes is something that’s very intoxicating to me.
Wiig announces plans to direct her first film, which she will soon be co-writing with Annie Mumulo, with whom she wrote Bridesmaids. They will both star in the movie as best friends. Of her plans to start writing, Wiig said
We’re very excited to be writing. We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.
Favreau plays Casper in this drama which he also directs. Casper quits his job at a restaurant with belief that he can do better. He joins his ex-wife and son to start up a food truck. Co-stars include Robert Downey Jr., Oliver Platt, Dustin Hoffman, Sofia Vergara, Scarlett Johansson, Bobby Cannavale, John Leguizamo and Emjay Anthony.
But on this movie, I really wanted to do something where I didn’t have to check what color the hat should be or what city has the biggest rebate or what actors test the highest.
In this mystery directed by Berg, a detective (Kevin Jones) tries to unravel the mystery of two young women responsible for an infant’s murder. Co-starring Diane Lane, Dakota Fanning, Elizabeth Banks and Laura Lippman.
I worked in broadcast journalism and print for a bit, in my early days. I just watched how the machine would take something that felt very thorough, exploring the nuances of a story, and then just chop it down to two minutes, 30 minutes before it airs. And then all the work that I did would end up on the floor.
Eminem announces Spike Lee as director for the music video for Headlights.
Detroit’s Finest EMINEM And Me Working Together On His Short a Film.Historic. Who Woulda Thunk It.
Gibney releases documentary about the creation of Assange’s controversial website.
I thought it was an incredible David and Goliath story in the age of the internet… I initially thought it was a story about a fascinating new technology, this idea of the leaking machine. So that’s what originally motivated me. My reasons for doing the film changed as I learned more about the story.
De Palma directs this neo-noir about sexual tension, jealousy and, eventually, violence, between a boss and her protégé in an advertising agency. Rachel McAdams, Noomi Rapace, and Karoline Herfurth star.
This is a relationship picture, and the girls came in to rehearse, and we sort of watched what they did and how they played with the material, and we adjusted the script to their interaction.
Miyazaki’s final movie, The Wind Rises, is released to mixed reviews due to its controversial subject matter– Japan’s role in World War II. The movie tells the fictionalized tale of Jiro Korikoshi, the engineer behind Japan’s most successful fighter planes during the war.
Jiro Horikoshi was the most gifted man of his time in Japan. He wasn’t thinking about weapons – really all he desired was to make exquisite planes.
Starring Winona Ryder, Burton directs his second music video with the Killers, Here with Me.
Gibney releases documentary about the cover up of pedophilia in the Roman Catholic Church.
I had read a story in The New York Times about a particularly horrific abuse case involving some two hundred deaf boys who had been abused by a priest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What made the story stand out for me were the documents that were revealed as part of the investigation which led straight to the Vatican – not only to the Vatican, but to Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict. That seemed to me a story that hadn’t been told yet.
Burton remakes his 1984 short film, Frankenweenie, as a feature-length stop motion film. Again working with Walt Disney Pictures, Burton says:
The film is based on a memory that I had when I was growing up and with my relationship with a dog that I had.
Based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, Burton co-directs Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. With an overly obvious plot, reviews were negative: The Wall Street Journal says:
Someone forgot to tell the filmmakers that the movie was supposed to be fun. Or at least smart.
Howard Cantour.com, a short film directed by LaBeouf, premiers at the Cannes Film Festival. The 12-minute short stars Jim Gaffigan as Howard Cantour, an internet film critic who runs a movie review website with his carefully cultivated and critical eye.
It’s really an honor to be presenting my directorial debut to this crowd. It’s really outrageous to me.
Tarantino releases Django Unchained, which stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio. The story follows Django, played by Foxx, who is on a quest to free his wife from slavery with the help of Dr. King Schultz, played by Waltz.
… There’s two types of violence in this film: There’s the brutal reality that slaves lived under for … 245 years, and then there’s the violence of Django’s retribution. And that’s movie violence, and that’s fun and that’s cool, and that’s really enjoyable and kind of what you’re waiting for.
Hanks co-writes, co-produces, directs, and stars in Larry Crowne, a romantic comedy also starring Julia Roberts about a middle aged man who goes back to school to better educate himself after losing his job. The film was a critical and box office failure.
Based on the gothic TV soap opera of the 1960’s, Burton casts Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter to star in a film adaptation of Dark Shadows. Depp plays a centuries old vampire who escapes his grave in 1972 and has to adapt to the new times and what has become of his family line.
Collins directs for the first time in the short, Stranger Danger. The video is labeled a ‘cautionary tale’ on Collins’ YouTube page.

Moments of delight, humor and bedazzelment. But it also becomes more ordinary as it goes along, building to a generic battle climax similar to a number of others in CGI-heavy movies of the past few years.
Gordon-Levitt directs and stars in this six-minute romantic silent film as the lead role of Morgan M. Morgansen. He goes on a date with his vegetarian love interest, Destiny, who is played by Lexy Hulme. Destiny is offended when he orders rabbit for dinner:
It was written by a young lady named metaphorest, and I loved her words so much that I recorded some voice-over for it, which inspired drawings, which inspired animations. There will always be a very special place in the heart of our HitRECord community for our man, Morgan M. Morgansen.
Miyazaki’s take on The Little Mermaid, Ponyo, is released. The story follows the adventures of Ponyo, a half goldfish girl, as she explores life out of the sea with Sosuke, a five year-old boy.
I have always dreamed of making a film with the sea as a motif, but animating the waves is really hard, so I wasn’t able to do that up to now. I decided to change the way of animating, and had a change of thought: that the sea is actually a living thing. Of course, it took courage to draw eyes on it! But a lot of the staff thought it was interesting so I thought, “Oh, okay, it works!”
After seeing Shane Acken’s 2005 short film, 9, Burton immediately contacts him to produce a full-length adaptation. De Palma directs this film based on a novel by James Ellroy, which is loosely structured around the facts of the real life Black Dahlia murder case. When a woman is found cut in half, two cops try to solve the mystery. Josh Hartnett, Aaron Eckhart, and Scarlett Johansson star.
I tried to stay very close to the Ellroy book, and, if it got a little too complex, so be it. That’s the way he told the story. I did not try to straighten out any of the kinks or curves.
McKay’s second film as co-writer/director starts showing in theaters. Ferrell co-writes and stars as Ricky Bobby, a top-ranked NASCAR driver, while Reilly plays teammate Cal Naughton. McKay explains how Reilly adapted to the director’s unique style:

This macabre musical about a young bridegroom who mistakenly weds a girl from beyond the grave is an endearingly schizoid Frankenstein of a movie, by turns relentlessly high-spirited and darkly poignant.
Adapting another Roald Dahl novel, Burton releases Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket and Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Bucket. Spielberg directs this drama about a man from a foreign country trapped in an airline terminal for a very, very long time. During his time there he meets new friends, deals with tragedy, and falls in love. Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Chi McBride star.
It was going to be a tremendous performance opportunity for Tom [Hanks], and I wanted to be in on that, around that … I wanted to be in his zone
Tarantino completes “The Bride’s” saga with Kill Bill: Volume 2. Top-billed by Uma Thurman and David Carradine, the film also stars Vivica A. Fox, Lucy Liu, Sonny Chiba, and Chiaki Kuriyama.
…Vol. 2 was just more, you know, business as usual. You’ve got two people sitting in a room talking. That’s what I’m more famous for.
Miyazaki’s second literary adaptation, Howl’s Moving Castle, is released to mixed reviews. The story follows a young girl named Sophie after she is cursed by a witch and becomes an old woman.
We don’t know why, but it had very extreme reactions: people who really loved it, and people who didn’t understand it. It was a horrible experience. I’ve been so tired out since Princess Mononoke.
Burton directs Big Fish, based on the Daniel Wallace novel, Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions. The film is about a father telling his son his life story using exaggeration and color.

I want to top expectations. I want to blow you away. It’s that kind of movie.
Spielberg directs the true story about a likable young con man, and the FBI agent who attempts to track him down. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the con man, and Tom Hanks plays the agent.
I committed to directing Catch Me If You Can not because of the divorce component, but principally because Frank Abagnale did things that were the most astonishing scams I had ever heard. And I’m a big fan of scams.
Spielberg directs a science fiction film thriller starring Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, and Samantha Morton. The film is set in a futuristic world were special psychics called “precogs” inform police about crimes before they are ever committed.
I went to Scott Frank for the screenplay. He wrote Get Shorty and Out of Sight. I gave him the original short story by Philip K. Dick and he said he didn’t know anything about science fiction. I said, ‘Let me worry about the sci fi element. Just write a terrific detective yarn’.
Hanks co-directs the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers with Steven Spielberg. The show chronicles the 101st Airborne Division thought training, Europe, and the end of World War II.
What we’re doing with Band of Brothers is trying to put it into human terms, so it is not just a flickering, black and white myth on a screen, it is a resonant story. I want the audience to recognize themselves in these men. They’re not just mythic heroes.
Spielberg directs this science fiction film based on a screenplay by Stanley Kubrick. A young boy who is actually a robot lives in a futuristic society where machines have become essentially sentient. Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law, and Frances O’Connor star.
I would speculate that Stanley [Kubrick] would have made and told much the same story I told because I based my screenplay on a 90-page treatment [concept] Stanley had prepared from all of his own ideas.
Miyazaki’s most successful movie in the West, Spirited Away, is released. The fantasy tale follows a girl named Chihiro as she attempts to save her parents in a world of spirits.
After I started production, the key animator, the art director and the producer came out on holiday with me and we had this blackboard and tried to draft out which direction the film was going in. I explained, “I think we’ll be able to do this kind of story, with this kind of ending,” and then Suzuki-san (the producer) said: “Ah. That will take three hours. I don’t want to make a three-hour movie!”
