Suffers a stroke

Bettelheim suffers from a stroke that leaves him unable to think and process information as he had earlier. The stroke is not particularly severe, but prevents him from writing his books and essays. He complains of residues from the stroke, including frustration about physical activity, a pervasive feeling that his body was betraying him; he walks with a slight limp and needs a cane for assistance; he is no longer able to exercise by walking long distances. The stroke also impairs his handwriting and his capacity to type, severely inhibiting the composition of his books and articles. Like many stroke victims, Bettelheim’s emotional state oscillates between depression and anguish.

Parkinson’s diagnosis

Reno is diagnosed with Parkinson’s two years into her term, after realizing something might be wrong with her left hand.

I noticed a tremor in my early-morning walks around the Capitol. At first it was just a faint twitch, but it got progressively worse, and so I went to the doctor. He asked me some questions, examined me, and told me that I had Parkinson’s and that I’d be fine for 20 years…I went to the bookstore and got as many books as I could find. I read, and then after talking with my family and friends, I told my doctor that I wanted to make a full statement about it and have him available to answer questions….I made sure that I told the President [Bill Clinton] and everyone else that they should be honest with me if they thought I wasn’t able to serve. He was very supportive. Then I just moved ahead. I made a decision to continue doing my job.

Brain tumor diagnosis

Rice learns he has a large brain tumor.

It’s called an acoustic neuroma and it’s about 4cm long. The good news is that it’s benign, although removing it will cost me the hearing in my left ear.

On Bacher’s advice, he plans to have surgery in Hanover, Germany.

Ali told me that some things are negotiable – but in this case he was not prepared to negotiate with me. He insisted that I go to Hanover because that is were I will get the best possible treatment. I was planning on having the surgery done in South Africa, but I took Ali’s advice.

Ex-wife blames Cage

Cage‘s ex-wife Christina Fulton blames Cage for their son’s mental illness and hospitalization. According to Fulton, Weston has been mentally ill for most of his life.

I do not want him with Nicolas Cage. I do not want him in that care. That is not the care my son needs.

In response Weston Cage says:

I am an adult. I don’t want to have anything to do with my mother. Any problems that I have ever had is because of the relationship that I had with my mother.”

Fulton says it is “an absolute disgrace” that the lawyer would solicit such a statement from her son while he was under a psychiatric hold, deemed legally incompetent.

Denied asylum, hospitalized

McAfee says he suffered chest pains overnight and is hospitalized briefly after being denied political asylum in Guatemala. McAfee says he does not believe that he suffered a heart attack, and a doctor agrees that his heart rhythm and blood pressure are normal and that he appears to be suffering from high stress. Shortly after the decision to deny him asylum is announced, McAfee issues a plea on his blog for the public to petition Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina to let him stay.

Please email the President of Guatemala and beg him to allow the court system to proceed, to determine my status in Guatemala, and please support the political asylum that I am asking for.

McAfee’s legal team said they are preparing to appeal the denial of asylum to the country’s constitutional court, a process that could give McAfee perhaps another day or two in Guatemala. The court would have to issue a decision within 48 hours.  Later, he is released from the hospital and taken back to the detention center.

Parkinson’s diagnosis

After struggling with symptoms of the disease for nearly eight years Ronstadt is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She says the disease has stopped her singing:

I can’t sing a note. I knew it was mechanical. I knew it had to do with the muscles, but I thought it might have also had something to do with the tick disease that I had. And it didn’t occur to me to go to a neurologist…In fact, I couldn’t sing for the last five or six years I appeared on stage, but I kept trying. I kept thinking, ‘What if I tried singing upside down? Or standing on my head? Or while juggling? [Laughs] Maybe I’d be able to sing better then.’ So I didn’t know why I couldn’t sing — all I knew was that it was muscular, or mechanical. Then, when I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, I was finally given the reason.

After a five-day inspection, World Health Organization experts don’t recommend restrictions on travel to Saudi Arabia, including upcoming pilgrimages, although two deaths and 10 more cases are reported today. In Jeddah, WHO and Acting Health Minister Adel Fakeih launch a kingdom-wide public awareness campaign, urging the public to do frequent hand washing and sanitizing as well as to avoid contact with eyes, nose and mouth.  The experts recommend cooking camel meat until well done and avoiding unpasteurized camel milk.

Statement on illness

Makes Statement0 Comments

Nintendo issues Iwata’s statement on his absence on E3:

Thank you very much for your continued extraordinary support of us. I am Satoru Iwata, President of the company. Today, there is one thing that I would like to share with you…Recently, as the result of one of my routine physical examinations, an issue was detected. Following a more detailed examination, a growth was found in my bile duct.In general, it is said that a bile duct growth can be difficult-to-treat, partly because of the difficulty of detecting it early. In my case, luckily, it was detected very early and I had no symptoms. I was counseled that removal at an early stage would be the desirable medical option. Therefore I had surgery last week, and I came through it well, as predicted. I have already resumed my business by email and by other means, but it is anticipated that a little more time is needed for me to return to my regular work schedule. As a result, I have no choice but to miss the company’s very important activity, the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, to be held this month. As the president of the company, I regret that I cannot attend the meeting. However, I understand that I have to prioritize my medical treatment and to recover as soon as possible so that I will again be able to do my best to help the company to grow. I hope that you understand. Best Regards, Satoru Iwata

Breast cancer diagnosis

Lunden is diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, a rare and aggressive form. Two small tumors were discovered in her right breast by doctors during a precautionary ultrasound. Lunden tells CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta,

I knew the minute the doctor walked in the office. You could just tell by her demeanor. She said, ‘you definitely have breast cancer.’ When I heard those words — it doesn’t make any difference if you’re a doctor — those are scary words and they’re shocking,

Lunden says she immediately consulted specialists and sought other opinions before starting with chemotherapy. Lunden told CNN that she decided to shave her hair before losing it to chemotherapy, and has decided on therapy aimed at reducing the size of a tumor with chemotherapy, a lumpectomy to remove the cancer, followed by radiation therapy.

Lecpetex botnet destroyed

Facebook works with Greek police to take down Lecpetex, a botnet affecting 50,000 Facebook accounts and 250,000 computers worldwide. Victims receive a private message with an executable file in a .zip folder. When run, the program harvests login credentials or uses the computer’s power to mine cryptocurrency. The botnet is able to infect so many people because it constantly changes to evade Facebook’s threat detection measures:

Over the last seven months we saw the botnet operators experiment with different social engineering tactics, including embedding Java JAR files, using Visual Basic Scripts (VBS), and creating malformed ZIP archives and Microsoft Cabinet files (CAB) . . . The files used in the spam messages were also refreshed frequently to evade anti-virus vendor detection.

CDC concerned about spread

The CDC is now concerned about the risk of Ebola spreading beyond Guinea, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Dr. Skinner, an infectious disease specialist from the organization, says that travelers could unknowingly transfer the deadly virus beyond more international borders. Dr. Rob Dretler, CDC:

We know what to do and can completely isolate them but someone coming home who doesn’t know they are sick and is here a few days and gets sick, that’s the risk.
