Bolt announces that he plans to retire after the 2017 World Championships in London.

That was the initial plan (to retire in 2016). But my sponsor has asked me to go on for another year, to 2017 and London. But I’ll be doing one event, the 100. I’ve already discussed it with my coach. I can concentrate on that, and on retiring on a winning note.

Johnson retires from the NFL after a 12 year career.

Today I am announcing my retirement from the game I love. I lived a dream which few can say but it’s time to move on. I want to thank the Chargers organization for giving me a home these past three years. I have nothing but respect for the players, coaches, front office staff and fans that were a part of me and my family’s lives. It’s been a great ride!

Roos retires after ten seasons in the NFL.  Coach Munchak:

Michael was such an intelligent football player…He always understood his opponent, our offensive scheme, their defensive scheme and all the angles involved. That knowledge and film work let him play with a great deal of confidence. … As coaches, we were never concerned about his matchup, because he could handle any opponent, whether it was a big guy or an athletic guy.

Hamilton retires from basketball.

Today is a very special day for me because today is the day that I take my shoes … and I find a little street corner down the street and throw my sneakers on the power lines because today I officially retire from the NBA…I looked myself in the mirror and said, ‘Hey, you know what, it might be my time. I’ve got a lot of miles on my body, I think I just need to let it go.’

Mikulski announces she will not seek reelection for a sixth term in the United States Senate.

I had to decide how would I spend my time–fighting for my job or fighting for their job? Do I spend my time raising money or do I spend my time raising hell?

Senator Ben Cardin:

I look at today as an opportunity to celebrate a remarkable person. This is bittersweet for me. We’re partners and we have this working relationship that I think has benefited the people of Maryland and the United States.

President Obama:

Senator Mikulski is more than just a legendary senator for the people of Maryland, she’s an institution in the United States Senate. Barbara’s service to the people of Maryland spans decades, but her legacy will span generations. Barbara is the longest serving woman in Congress, and her leadership serves as an inspiration to millions of women and girls across the globe to stand up and lead.

Retires after eight seasons

After eight seasons with the 49ers, Willis retires from the NFL.

In my head, I’m already a Hall of Famer. I am leaving this with closure, saying that I am happy today, more happy today than I was the day I was drafted. That says something to me…I have no regrets. I’ve had the most amazing eight years of football of my life. I am so humbled to have had this opportunity. I’ve been so humbled to have played this game…I would love nothing more than to be able to lace up them cleats and not worry, ‘Are my feet going to be all right today just to practice so I don’t look old at 30?’

Borland is retiring due to concerns about the long-term effects stemming from repetitive head trauma. He says he made his decision after talking it over with family members, concussion researchers, friends and teammates, and after studying what is known about the relationship between football and neurodegenerative disease.

I just honestly want to do what’s best for my health. From what I’ve researched and what I’ve experienced, I don’t think it’s worth the risk…I feel largely the same, as sharp as I’ve ever been. For me, it’s wanting to be proactive. I’m concerned that if you wait ’til you have symptoms, it’s too late. … There are a lot of unknowns. I can’t claim that X will happen. I just want to live a long, healthy life, and I don’t want to have any neurological diseases or die younger than I would otherwise…I just thought to myself, ‘What am I doing? Is this how I’m going to live my adult life, banging my head, especially with what I’ve learned and know about the dangers?’

After 16 seasons in the NBA, Harrington retires. He averaged 13.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game through a career in which he played for seven NBA teams. He is only one of five players to play more than 15 seasons after making the leap from high school to the NBA.

I’m very happy with what I was able to accomplish. I was able to change a lot of people’s lives in my family, including myself, in a game that I eventually fell in love with and will always be in love with. And hopefully, I can stay around the game until I die.

It was a fun ride. It went by fast, too. It was like one minute I was 18, the next I was 25, then was 30 and now I’m 35. It was a fun run. Met a lot of great people.

Retires after 19 years

After 19 years in the NBA, Nash announces his retirement. During his career, he won the MVP twice and he accumulated the third-most assists in NBA history.

The greatest gift has been to be completely immersed in my passion and striving for something I loved so much — visualizing a ladder, climbing up to my heroes. The obsession became my best friend. I talked to her, cherished her, fought with her and got knocked on my ass by her.

And that is what I’m most thankful for in my career. In my entire life, in some ways. Obviously, I value my kids and my family more than the game, but in some ways having this friend — this ever-present pursuit — has made me who I am, taught me and tested me, and given me a mission that feels irreplaceable. I am so thankful. I’ve learned so many invaluable lessons about myself and about life. And of course I still have so much to learn. Another incredible gift.

Re-signs with WWE; ends MMA career

Signs Contract0 Comments

Lesnar announces on SportsCenter that he has re-signed with the WWE and that he has retired from the MMA.

I’m officially closing the door on MMA. It was a very hard decision at this stage of my career. The fighter inside me wants to compete. The father and husband — I’m an older caveman now. I make wiser caveman decisions. So, I’m here to say my legacy in the Octagon is over.

It was a hard decision to make. It took me a year. I’ve thought about this for a year. At the end of the day, it’s all about me wanting to have fun. The last two-and-a-half months I’ve been training to get back into the Octagon. I felt physically great, but something lacked mentally — and that’s not good.

Reid is retiring from the U.S. Senate, bringing a 30 year congressional career to an end. He said he had been contemplating retirement for months and that this decision wasn’t attributable to either the accident he suffered or to his demotion to minority leader. He endorses Senator Schumer as his successor.

I want to be able to go out at the top of my game. I don’t want to be a 42-year-old trying to become a designated hitter.
