DeSantis declares White House run on glitchy Twitter space

DeSantis officially launches his 2024 presidential campaign with an hour-long discussion, hosted by Musk and Sacks on a Twitter Space. Initially, the event was hit with technical glitches and audio-drops, which meant that many people could not listen. Sacks:

I think we’re breaking the internet here.

Around 700,000 people logged in to hear the conversation, including Donald Trump’s former press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, attorney Rudy Giuliani and legal adviser Jenna Ellis.

DeSantis says American democracy under attack by rising crime, out-of-touch liberal “woke” ideologies, out-of-control immigration at the southern border, and points to his track record as Florida governor as a blueprint for his plan in the White House. He says his achievements included the speed with which Florida opened up during the Covid pandemic, legislation restricting sex education in classrooms, and curbs on undocumented immigrants.

We know our country is going in the wrong direction. We see it with our eyes, and we feel it in our bones…Our president, well, he lacks vigour, flounders in the face of our nation’s challenges and he takes his cues from the woke mob. I don’t think it has to be this way. American decline isn’t inevitable. It is a choice.

We need the courage to lead and we must have the strength to win. If you nominate me, you can set your clock to January 20th, 2025, at high noon because on the west side of the US Capitol, I will be taking the oath of office as the 47th president.

Musk used the event to herald free speech and received praise from DeSantis and others for challenging mainstream platforms. Musk:

Twitter was expensive but free speech is priceless.

DeSantis’s team claims over $1m in campaign donations was raised in under an hour.

Told adviser to send sensitive messages ‘nonsecure’

Political Endorsement0 Comments

According to one of 1,262 emails released by the State Department, on June 17, 2011, Clinton told Jake Sullivan, one of her top advisers, to send her a sensitive message ‘nonsecure’. The batch also contains 66 classified messages, bringing the total from her email server to 1,340. The exchange happened when Sullivan had trouble sending a faxed set of talking points to Clinton securely. Clinton responds:

If they can’t, turn into nonpaper w no identifying heading and send nonsecure.

It is unclear whether the talking points themselves contained classified information. The State Department says a review showed that the document in question was sent “apparently by secure fax, after all,” and was never was sent to Clinton by email. Clinton’s campaign:

It is false that Hillary Clinton asked for classified material to be sent over a nonsecure system.

McAfee announces his presidential run, and the launch of the Cyber Party. He says he decided to run after being encouraged by “almost everyone” he knows and meets, and because he believes governments worldwide are “out of touch”.  McAfee says the hallmarks of his campaign would be his outspoken nature and his willingness to answer any question about his background. He will run on a privacy platform, saying that the desire to respond to terrorist attacks had opened citizens up to excessive surveillance.

I have a huge underground following on the web. I promise you I will win because I have the votes…We are losing privacy at an alarming rate — we have none left. We’ve given up so much for the illusion of security and our government is simply dysfunctional. The government can spy on people using their mobile phones while they’re with their wives and husbands.

He also says that his recent DUI was the result of Xanax, a claims that he says will be supported by a blood test.

Kasich declares his candidacy for President with a 45-minute personal and at times emotional speech in which he differentiates himself from his rival Republican candidates as he stresses a more empathetic approach.

The Lord wants our hearts to reach out to those who don’t have what we have. That shouldn’t be hard for America, that’s who we are. Empathy. Don’t be so quick too judge.

Walker declares his candidacy for President, portraying himself as a man who gets things done, who got a conservative agenda passed in a state that normally supports Democrats, and who has curtailed the power of labor unions.

In the Republican field, there are some who are good fighters, but they haven’t won those battles. And there are others who’ve won elections, but haven’t consistently taken on the big fights. We showed you can do both. I am running for president to fight and win for the American people.

Trump announces his candidacy for president at Trump Tower, New York. His introduced by his daughter, Ivanka.

We are going to make our country great again. I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created.

They all said, a lot of the pundits on television, well, Donald will never run, and one of the main reasons is he’s private and he’s probably not as successful as everybody thinks. So I said to myself, you know, nobody is ever going to know unless I run because I’m really proud of my success.

Sadly the American dream is dead. But if I get elected president I will bring it back, bigger, and better, and stronger than ever before

I would do various things very quickly. I would repeal and replace the big lie, Obamacare. I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will have Mexico pay for that wall.

When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best; they’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people

Nobody would be tougher on ISIS than Donald Trump, nobody…I will stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons.

Our country needs a truly great leader. And we need a truly great leader now. We need a leader that wrote the art of the deal, we need a leader that can bring back our jobs, can bring back our manufacturing, can bring back our military, and take care of our vets

Perry launches his second presidential campaign  in front of a crowd of 1,000. Using a C-130 cargo plane — the type he flew while serving in the U.S. Air Force — as a backdrop and introduced by veterans, he emphasizes his military service, and says that Americans see the system rigged, are stuck with stagnated wages and stifled by regulations, mounting tuition costs, with many families on food stamps.

Now is the time for clear-sighted leadership. This is the election where voters will ask, ‘Where have you led?’ It’s not a speech on the Senate floor. It’s not what you’ve said; it’s what you have done…I know America has experienced great change, but what it means to be an American has never changed…I hear you; you are not forgotten. I’m running to be your president

Sanders formally launches his bid to unseat Hillary Clinton from the left, on the shore of Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont:

Today, with your support and the support of millions of people throughout this country, we begin a political revolution to transform our country economically, politically, socially and environmentally…There is something profoundly wrong when the top one-tenth of 1% owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90% and when 99% of all new income goes to the top 1%…This grotesque level of inequality is immoral. It is bad economics. It is unsustainable. This type of rigged economy is not what America is supposed to be about. … The issue of wealth and income inequality is the great moral issue of our time, it is the great economic issue of our time and it is the great political issue of our time. And we will address it…Join me in this campaign to build a future that works for all of us, and not just the few on top.

The president’s backers argue that his first term should not count since he was picked by lawmakers rather than voted in. US State Department:

With this decision, Burundi is losing an historic opportunity to strengthen its democracy by establishing a tradition of peaceful democratic transition.

Rubio announces that he’s running for President in a speech at the grand hall of Miami’s Freedom Tower, the place where Cuban exiles were first welcomed into the United States.

Grounded by the lessons of our history, but inspired by the promise of our future, I announce my candidacy for President of the United States of America.

Referring to Hillary Clinton’s announcement the day before:

Yesterday is over, and we are never going back. You see, we Americans are proud of our history, but our country has always been about the future. And before us now is the opportunity to author the greatest chapter yet in the amazing story of America. But we can’t do that by going back to the leaders and ideas of the past. We must change the decisions we are making by changing the people who are making them.

He mentions his father:

He used to tell me all the time: ‘En este país, ustedes van a poder lograr todas las cosas que nosotros no pudimos’” In this country, you will achieve all the things we never could.

After he finishes the speech, his wife, Jeanette, and their four young children — Amanda, Daniella, Anthony and Dominick — embrace him.
