McGregor given two-month ban for medical reasons

Suspension0 Comments

McGregor is given a two-month suspension from all sport on medical grounds. The ban prevents McGregor from another fight – boxing or MMA – until at least October 26 and no physical contact at all until October 11. At the end of the ban period, Nevada State Athletic Commission will ask McGregor, 29, to take a medical exam. McGregor was spotted with a black eye hours after the fight, but otherwise looked in good shape. McGregor gained more than a stone between weigh-in and fight

Weigh-in0 Comments

McGregor piled on more than a stone in weight in the hours before the fight with Mayweather. At Friday’s weigh-in he tipped the scales at 153lb — just under the 154lb limit for the contest. Then he started to refuel and rehydrate so that he claimed he was back to his ideal “fighting weight” of 170lb before entering the ring. McGregor reached the 154lb weigh-in limit by drinking little water over several days and not eating carbohydrates.

Floyd Mayweather beats Conor McGregor by TKO

Wins Sport Event0 Comments

Floyd Mayweather beats Conor McGregor in the tenth round with a TKO. McGregor starts strong in the first two rounds. In the third round the fighters grapple more, with McGregor getting a warning for hitting Mayweather on the back of the head. In the fourth round, Mayweather comes back, while McGregor’s energy lowers. From the sixth round, Mayweather attacks aggressively. In the ninth McGregor appears very tired, with Mayweather going for the kill. In the tenth the referee stops the fight. Mayweather:

We talked about he’s a tough competitor. I told him that I owed him for the Pacquiao. He’s a lot better than I thought he was. He was a tough competitor, but I was the better man tonight. Out game plan was to go to him…Me and my dad talked about it. We wanted him to use all his heavy shots early…I guaranteed everybody that this fight wouldn’t go the distance. I want to thank all the fans around the world, and from Ireland, for coming…This was my last fight. Tonight I chose the right dance partner. Conor McGregor you’re a hell of a champion.

McGregor:

I took the early rounds pretty handy. He’s not that powerful, but he’s composed. Fair play to him. He’s had a great run. They should have let me keep going…I was just a little fatigued…I’ve been strangled on live TV and came back. I thought we were closed…Of course [I’ll get back to the UFC]…I’m just happy I’m here in the flag, with the fans.

McGregor weighs-in at 153 pounds

Weigh-in0 Comments

McGregor weighs-in at 153 pounds, one pound under weight, and 3.5 pounds heavier than Mayweather.

He looks like dogsh*t. Blown up. Full of water. That’s the worst shape I’ve ever seen him. I’m gonna breeze through. 153! I’m a professional. I make weight…I put in the work, as everyone can tell… I’ll be a lot bigger [when I get into the ring]. [I’ll be] 170. You can’t beat us.  We roll in and we take over. Las Vegas is Ireland now…I won’t go nowhere other than the center of the ring. So let’s see who can take it. He’s over there twiddling his thumbs…I see a man afraid.

Mayweather weighs in at 149.5 pounds

Weigh-in0 Comments

Mayweather weighs in at 149.5 pounds, 4.5 pounds underweight.

I’ve been here before. I know what it takes. He did a lot of [talking] but tomorrow it comes down to the fighters. Weight doesn’t win fights. Fighting wins fights…It won’t go the distance. Mark my words…I just want to thank the fans. The will become the greatest last fight also…The fans can’t fight for you. It comes down to the two competitors. 49 times I went out there it was one on one.

Malignaggi has 12-round ‘full on fight’ with McGregor

Practice Event0 Comments

Malignaggi fights McGregor, shortly after arriving on a cross-country flight. Their spar is described by Tiernan Bradley as a “full-on fight”. Bradley:

I was in Paulie’s corner and although he hasn’t fought since March and is retired, he’s getting sharper by the day. You can see he’s still a class operator, and it was an interesting spar to watch – more a full on fight actually. Conor told us all when Paulie came into camp ‘this is not a spar, I want to fight him. I’m ready for a war’.

Malignaggi:

We had 12 rounds of sparring last night. It was good work, hard work. I actually wasn’t too thrilled that they wanted me to go twelve rounds 24 hours after getting off a cross-country flight. Especially when I hadn’t worked all last week, so I wasn’t thrilled and I kinda came into the gym last night with a bit of a chip on my shoulder and the sparring got intense, it got heated. We went 12 hard rounds and I think I made my point last night I’ll say that. Basically, don’t f— with me. I’m here to help, I’m here to do the best I can for you guys, so don’t try to take advantage of me. Don’t try to make like you’re running a two-time world champion out of your camp or whatnot. Honestly I questioned last night whether I could go twelve rounds and the first five rounds of back-and-forth action, I wasn’t really sure I could go the full twelve. Then as we got to round six, he started fading a little bit and that’s when I really tried to dig in there and that’s when I said you know what I’m going to stay in here, I got a point to make tonight. I managed to last until about 12, but in rounds 11 and 12 he came back and put it on me. I just totally gassed out in the eleventh and twelfth. So we returned the favors to each other last night.

UFC asks $10m for top fight sponsorship

Sponsorship Deal0 Comments

WME-IMG, owners of the UFC, set a $10 million asking price for the title sponsor of the McGregor-Mayweather fight. The $10 million would nearly double boxing’s largest single-fight sponsorship, the $5.6 million that Tecate paid for Mayweather-Pacquiao in May 2015. The sponsoring company would get its logo at the center of the ring at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, its branding on ring girls, on two of the ropes and in the two nonfighter corners of the ring. The deal also includes sponsorship of the first minute of every round on the broadcast and $500,000 in tickets. For $5 million sponsors can buy one of the fighters’ corners that would include signage in that corner, sponsorship to the broadcast corner cam and $250,000 in tickets.
