Defends private email use

Makes Statement0 Comments

In a press conference Clinton says she used a private e-mail account to conduct State Department business for “convenience”. She says she has released more than 27,500 emails (from a total of 62,320) that involved official government e-mail addresses, such as those addressed to .gov addresses, names of government officials and Clinton’s staff, but also for terms including “Benghazi” and “Libya.” 31,830 e-mails were deemed personal and deleted. She said she did not discuss classified information on her personal e-mail.

I opted for convenience to use my personal email account, which was allowed by the State Department, because I thought it would be easier to carry just one device for my work and for my personal emails instead of two…Looking back it would have been better to use separate phones and two separate e-mail accounts. I thought one (mobile) device would be simpler. Obviously, it hasn’t worked out that way…I have no doubt we have done exactly what we should have done.

Clinton said she “chose not to keep” personal e-mails:

No one wants their personal e-mails made public and I think most people understand that and respect that privacy.

When asked about the impact of the controversy on whether she will run for President:

I trust the American people to make their decisions about political and public matters and I feel that I’ve taken unprecedented steps to provide these work-related emails, they’re going to be in the public domain, and Americans will find that interesting and I look forward to having that discussion.

Sues to force release of emails

Files Suit0 Comments

The Associated Press files a lawsuit against the U.S. State Department to force the release of email correspondence and government documents from Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State. The AP’s FOIA requests–and their lawsuit–are trying to uncover materials related to Clinton’s public and private calendars; correspondence with aides, especially the documents related to the decision to grant a longtime aide a special position within the department; and emails concerning the Osama bin Laden raid and National Security Agency surveillance practices.

After careful deliberation and exhausting our other options, The Associated Press is taking the necessary legal steps to gain access to these important documents, which will shed light on actions by the State Department and former Secretary Clinton, a presumptive 2016 presidential candidate, during some of the most significant issues of our time.

‘We have a fun deficit in America’

Gives Talk0 Comments

Clinton talks about having sleepaway camps for adults and more relationship-building in Washington, at the American Camp Association of New York and New Jersey’s Tri-State CAMP Conference.

We really need camps for adults. None of the serious stuff … I think we have a fun deficit in America…If you don’t build relationships with people and all you do is show up to argue or show up to point fingers, you can’t get anything done.

Clinton ‘would be an excellent president’

Makes Statement0 Comments

During a press conference in Panama at the Summit of the Americas, Obama talks about Clinton as next President:

She was a formidable candidate in 2008, she was a great supporter of mine in the general election, she was an outstanding secretary of state, she is my friend, I think she would be an excellent president.

Asked whether he hopes she campaigns on his record:

I’m not on the ballot. So I’m not going to step on her lines. When she makes a decision to announce, I’m confident that she will be very clear about her vision for the country.

Cites donor transparency

Makes Statement0 Comments

The Clinton Foundation says its disclosure of foreign donations is “stronger than ever.” Acting CEO Pally says the foundation will only accept donations from “a handful of governments.”

When Hillary Clinton was appointed Secretary of State, we took unprecedented steps to avoid potential conflicts of interest by going above and beyond what is required of any philanthropy and instituted voluntary annual disclosure of all donors on our website.

Pally also pushes back at specific criticism of donations linked to Giustra and a charity he established. Pally stresses that the charity is independent, and that Giustra established it in Canada so that Canadians could receive a tax credit for their donations to support the Clinton Foundation.

But as it is a distinct Canadian organization, separate from the Clinton Foundation, its individual donors are not listed on the site. This is hardly an effort on our part to avoid transparency — unlike in the U.S., under Canadian law, all charities are prohibited from disclosing individual donors without prior permission from each donor.

Pally admits mistakes

Makes Statement0 Comments

In response to charges of conflict of interest in Schweizer’s forthcoming book Clinton Cash, the Clinton Foundation admits that it made “mistakes” as the philanthropy grew but maintains that it did not intentionally do anything wrong.

Yes, we made mistakes, as many organizations of our size do, but we are acting quickly to remedy them, and have taken steps to ensure they don’t happen in the future.

Schweizer says that he did not have “direct evidence” of ethical misconduct, but says the pattern he uncovered should raise eyebrows and trigger an investigation.

It is heartbreaking. The tragic death of another young African-American man. The injuries to police officers. The burning of peoples’ homes and small businesses. We have to restore order and security. But then we have to take a hard look as to what we need to do to reform our system.

Criticizes Clinton immigration proposal

Makes Statement0 Comments

Graham strongly opposes Clinton’s proposal to expand President Obama’s offer of deportation relief to undocumented parents of children brought to the U.S. illegally.

What she’s doing is ensuring a third wave of illegal immigration. I think there’ll be a backlash in this country.

Iraq war vote ‘a mistake’

Makes Statement0 Comments

On the subject of her vote in favor of the Iraq war Clinton states:

Breaks silence, wants emails released

Interview0 Comments

After a campaign event at a bike shop in Iowa, where she was discussing small businesses and entrepreneurship, Clinton breaks her 28-day streak not talking to the press by answering six questions from reporters. On the release of State Department emails.

I want those emails out. Nobody has a bigger interest in getting [the emails] released than I do. They are not mine; they belong to the State Department. But as much as they can expedite that process. That’s what I’m asking: please move as quickly as they possibly can.

On her wealth:

Well, obviously Bill and I have been blessed and we’re very grateful for the opportunities that we had. But we’ve never forgotten where we came from, and we’ve never forgotten the kind of country that we want to see for our granddaughter. … So I think that most Americans understand that the deck is stacked for those at the top, and I am running a campaign that is very clearly stating that we want to shuffle that deck.

On the Clinton Foundation:

I am so proud of the foundation. I’m proud of the work that it has done and that it is doing. … And I’ll let the American people make their own judgments about that.

During the event, Clinton told the local businesses owners that she wants to roll back regulations on small businesses and small banks and spur business creation across the country.

I want to be a small business president.

Subpoenaed

A source says a subpoena has been issued to Blumenthal. The source declined to be publicly identified because of the ongoing probe of the Benghazi attack. The source says the House panel has “a number of questions” for Blumenthal, including whether he had any business arrangements that led him to frequently email Clinton about Libya when she was secretary of state. Rep. Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the panel, says the committee’s decision to have the U.S. Marshals Service deliver the subpoena to Blumenthal’s home is “heavy-handed.”
