Do you mind if I eat a little? I’m trying to gain a lot of weight. It means I have to eat every couple of hours – and I’m terrible at eating a lot.

Jared Leto interview

Interview

Seacrest interviews Leto during On Air With Ryan Seacrest and questions him about his single Afrojack.

It was a lot of fun, and it’s kind of our little summer song. I think it’s good to do things that are unexpected. It keeps it exciting and collaboration is always an interesting thing. A couple of years ago, I invited Kanye West to sing on a song and everyone was like, What the?’ But it was really cool and it let to all these other collaborations with him.

leto oscar2Leto wins Oscar for best supporting actor for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club.  Leto thanks his mother, older brother, the audience, people who have lost the battle to AIDS, and his agents.

In 1971 Bossier city, Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child.  She was a high school dropout and a single mom, but somehow, she managed to make a better life for herself and her children.  She encouraged her kids to be creative, to work hard and to do something special.  That girl is my mother, and she’s here tonight.  I love you, Mom; thank you for teaching me to dream.

Jared Leto interview

Seacrest interviews during On Air With Ryan Seacrest about the weight loss for his role in the film Dallas Buyers Club.

The weight (loss) is great because it helps change the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you think, the way people treat you and I was playing someone who was dying of AIDS and was also a drug addict, so it was kind of a necessity. I stopped eating, literally. I had a very short period of time of which to do it and at the end of the day, it’s just math. You have to burn more calories than you take in.

Dallas Buyers Club

Film Appearance

Leto stars in Dallas Buyers Club as Ron Woodroof, a hustler who works with an electrician to help get medication to AIDS patients after he is diagnosed with the disease himself. The film is a drama set in 1985.

My character actually isn’t real. She’s an amalgamation of several people. I base her on some people I had met in real life, some transgender people that were really kind and shared their life with me and taught me so much about that world, but I was actually able to have a bit more free rein because it wasn’t based on a real person.

Lord of War

Leto plays Vitaly Orlov, the brother of the world’s greatest gun dealer in this crime drama directed by Andrew Niccol. Orlov struggles with addiction and being the looser brother of one so successful. Always loyal and loving, one day his impulsive nature mixes with arms dealing and ends in tragedy. Also starring Nicolas Cage, Ethan Hawke and Bridget Moynahan.

He’s an innocent in a lot of ways. He’s a very simple person who really doesn’t have the resources or the strength, ultimately, to handle the situation. I think he’s very emotionally and intimately affected by the circumstances and situations that he experiences through his travels with Yuri.

Jared Leto born in Bossier City, Louisiana

Birth

Jared Leto is born in Bossier City, Louisiana to Constance Leto and Anthony Bryant. He has a brother named Shannon.

When Leto is eight, the family moves in with Leto’s maternal grandparents following his own parents’ divorce. His mother having joined the hippie movement, Leto is influenced by artists, musicians, photographers, painters and people in theater from a young age.

Just having the art communal hippie experience as a child, there wasn’t a clear line that was drawn. We celebrated creative experience and creative expression. We didn’t try and curtail it and stunt any of that kind of growth.
