Adopts ‘yes means yes’ law
California becomes the first state to adopt the ‘yes means yes’ law. Governor Brown signs Senate Bill 967 written by Sen. Kevin de Leon which issues requirements for colleges to follow when investigating sexual assault cases. The bill states that silence or lack of resistance does not constitute consent. De Leon statement:
Every student deserves a learning environment that is safe and healthy. The State of California will not allow schools to sweep rape cases under the rug. We’ve shifted the conversation regarding sexual assault to one of prevention, justice, and healing.
