Presidential abuse of power suit

Announcement

Citing alleged abuse of executive power, House Speaker John Boehner announces he will file a lawsuit against Obama. The suit needs formal approval by a group of House leaders.  Once that step is complete, the suit is expected to be filed in a few weeks. The plaintiff will be the House of Representatives.

This is not about impeachment — it’s about him faithfully executing the laws of this country. My view is the president has not faithfully executed the laws. What we have seen clearly over the last five years is an effort to erode the power of the Legislative Branch.

Calls lawsuit ‘stunt’

Interview

Obama tells George Stephanopoulos that House Speaker Boehner’s plans to file a lawsuit against him is “a stunt.”

You know, the suit is a stunt. But what I’ve told Speaker Boehner directly is, ‘If you’re really concerned about me taking too many executive actions, why don’t you try getting something done through Congress?

Republicans say the President breaches his constitutional power by side-stepping the legislative process. They say Obama uses executive actions as a way to bypass the divided Congress. The Republican-controlled House has passed two bills aimed at curbing executive orders by the President.

Backs anti-ISIS measures

House Speaker Boehner, R-Ohio, tells Obama he will back aggressive measures against ISIS including improving the Iraqi army and training and arming moderate Syrian opposition groups. The expression of support comes during a briefing by Obama of Boehner and the other three congressional leaders — House Minority Leader Pelosi, D-Calif., Senate Majority Leader Reid, D-Nev. and Senate Minority Leader McConnell, R-Ky. A Boehner aide:

[Boehner] would support the president if he chose to deploy the military to help train and play an advisory role for the Iraqi Security Forces and assist with lethal targeting of [ISIS leaders]

Blames Obama for immigration

Interview

On Face the Nation, Boehner blames President Obama for Congress’ failure to reform immigration laws.

He’s stirred up the American people in such a way that it would almost be impossible to do immigration reform, given the environment that we’re dealing with. I want to do immigration reform and the president knows it. I asked the president about a year ago, gave him some ideas about things that should happen if he wanted to do immigration reform, and some things that he shouldn’t do. Well, the president didn’t take my advice. And he doubled down on the executive orders that, frankly, far exceeded his authority, and the courts have got him stopped. He’s really poisoned the well.

Calls for Planned Parenthood investigation

Makes Statement

Boehner seeks to investigate Planned Parenthood’s alleged sale of organs from aborted fetuses.

At my request our committees have begun looking at some of the gruesome practices embraced by Planned Parenthood. I am also demanding that the President denounce and stop these practices. If you’ve seen this video I don’t have to tell you how sickening it is. So rest assured we are going to get to the bottom of this…It’s disgusting.

Seeks Boehner removal

Makes Statement

Meadows files a motion to remove Boehner as Speaker, saying that Boehner has caused the power of Congress to atrophy, “thereby making Congress subservient to the Executive and Judicial branches, diminishing the voice of the American People.” The motion also claims that Boehner has:

[used the power of his office to] punish Members who vote according to their conscience instead of the will of the Speaker.

Resigns

Resignation

Boehner resigns as House speaker and will give up his House seat:

My first job as speaker is to protect the institution. It had become clear to me that this prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable harm to the institution…This morning I woke up, said my prayers, as I always do, and thought ‘this is the day I am going to do this’.
