Billie Jean

Single Release0 Comments

Jackson releases Billie Jean, the second single from Thriller. The song is based on a true account where a girl would stalk Jackson and begin writing him letters claiming he was the father of her child. Jackson expressed is discomfort with the false claim indirectly with this song.

There is a girl named Billie Jean, but it’s not about that Billie Jean, Billie Jean is kind of anonymous. It represents a lot of girls. They used to call them groupies in the ’60s. They would hang around backstage doors, and any band that would come to town they would have a relationship with, and I think I wrote this out of experience with my brothers when I was little. There were a lot of Billie Jeans out there. Every girl claimed that their son was related to one of my brothers.

Beat It

Single Release0 Comments

Jackson releases Beat It, the third single from Thriller. The lyrics portray gang life on the streets which Jackson has mentioned he is not directly familiar with. The song talks about two gangs who come together to fight but are challenged to work together and settle their differences in peaceful manner.

Every song is different. The gestation process for BEAT IT was so fast, it was amazing. I thought about what I’d do in that situation… A confrontation with a gang… I wouldn’t do what these people would do. The way I was raised I would turn the other cheek without creating a war or being a coward either.

Leave Me Alone

Single Release0 Comments

Jackson releases Leave Me Alone from The Essential Michael Jackson. The song is composed, written and produced by Jackson. It highlights all of the negative stories and slander that was written about Jackson by the tabloid and broadcast media, including stories about sleeping in a gas chamber and purchasing the ‘Elephant Man’s’ bones.

It’s not true. It’s like looking at a fictitious movie because it’s fiction. It’s science fiction. It’s not true. I know myself and it’s sad when other people have to read those things and they believe it. I know eventually the truth will prevail and I’m about truth.

Stranger in Moscow

Single Release0 Comments

Jackson releases Stranger in Moscow the fifth single from HIStory. The song is an autobiographical look at Jackson’s tour in Moscow where he felt suddenly unknown and disconnected from his fans there.

I wrote that in Moscow. The lyrics are totally autobiographical. When you hear lines like, “Here abondoned in my fame…Armageddon of the brain” – at the time, on the last tour when we were in Moscow – that’s how I really felt. It kinda created itself. It fell into my lap, because that’s how I was feeling at the time. Just alone in my hotel and it was raining and I just started writing it.

Smile

Single Release0 Comments

Jackson releases his version of Smile, a song originally written by Charlie Chaplin for the score of his self-directed 1936 film Modern Times.

You have to have that tragedy, that pain to pull from. That’s what makes a clown great. You can see he’s hurting behind the masquerade. He’s something else externally. Charles Chaplin did that so beautifully, better than anyone. I can play off those moments, too. I’ve been through the fire many times.

Tabloid Junkie

Single Release0 Comments

Jackson releases Tabloid Junkie, the  eleventh track from his ninth album HIStory. The song chronicles Jackson’s tarnished public reputation from what it once was and it also tells of how the public quickly believe the headlines. In Jackson’s most recent albums, this has been an ongoing subject written both blatantly and passively.

Remember, the press is a business: Newspapers and magazines are in business to make money – sometimes at the expense of accuracy, fairness and even the truth.
