After the twins were born, zoo keepers decided to swap the cubs in Mei Xiang’s possession every four hours so each had time to nurse and spend quality time with her. After the most recent swap staff noticed the smaller cub’s weight was faltering.
We are sad to report that the smaller of the two panda cubs has died. The larger cub appears to be strong, robust, behaving normally and is with mother Mei Xiang.
So sad… Hopefully Momma will help to keep the other one alive. The keepers did the best they could.
I’m so sorry to hear that. I saw on Yahoo, I think yesterday, that the little cub was being “rejected” by its mother. Poor dear.

Sometimes Mama rejects because she knows what we don’t. RIP, baby panda 🙁
Hopefully the zoo will publish some specific details the death.

Yes, I recall reading pandas, who usually give birth to one cub, will choose one to raise if they give birth to more than one.
