‘I’m a Laker’

Makes Statement0 Comments

In the midst of recent speculation, including that of Coach Jackson, that he would finish his NBA career elsewhere, Bryant states that he doesn’t plan to play for anyone but the Lakers.

A lot of players want to go to different teams or contend to win championships. I’m a Laker, man. I’m a Laker for better or worse…How many times do I have to say that? Dude, I bleed purple and gold.

Hard cap on minutes

Makes Statement0 Comments

Lakers coach Scott says that Bryant will have a hard minutes cap this season. The cap is an attempt to preserve Bryant, who has had his last three seasons cut short by injuries. Scott:

I know Kobe’s a competitor and he’s going to play as many minutes as you want him to play. I’m also a competitor, so I want to win and I know having him on the court gives me the best opportunity to win.

Bryant, O’Neal clear the air

Interview0 Comments

Bryant and O’Neal discuss their relationship on O’Neal’s The Big Podcast with Shaq. O’Neal and Bryant were teammates on the Lakers from 1996 to 2004, winning titles in 2000, 2001, and 2002. However, a constant feud between the two led to O’Neal’s eventual departure from the team in 2004. O’Neal:

It’s time to clear the air, because I’ve said many times that we were the most enigmatic, controversial, most talked-about, dominant one-two punch. I just want people to know that I don’t hate you, I know you don’t hate me. I called it today a ‘work beef,’ is what we had.

Bryant:

Here’s the thing — what we did, our disagreements, what made those things special is we said them to each other’s face. We didn’t go behind each other’s back and whisper to our teammates about this, that and the other, because that does nothing but create friction and it’s cancerous to the team.

Rape, drugging suit filed

Files Suit0 Comments

A woman sues Rose, accusing him of criminal activities including rape and drugging. The woman, identified only as “Jane Doe” in the lawsuit, claims that she dated Rose from 2011 to 2013. During that time, Rose allegedly tried to pressure her to masturbate in front of him, allow him to have sex with her friends and engage in group sex with strangers, all of which she says she refused. She says the two continued to date until August 2013, when Rose and two friends, Ryan Allen and Randall Hampton (who is Rose’s personal manager), invited her to Rose’s Beverly Hills house, where, she says, they slipped a drug into her drink with the aim of raping her. She escaped the house with a friend, but later that night, Rose and his friends broke into her apartment and gang raped her while she was incapacitated. She says she remembers only “flashes” of the incident, but can remember the defendants forcibly raping her. Rose’s spokesperson:

The plaintiff’s allegations are completely false and without any factual basis. This is nothing more than a desperate attempt to shake down a highly respected and successful athlete. Mr. Rose was in a non-exclusive, consensual sexual relationship with the plaintiff for over two years. The plaintiff expressed no complaints about Mr. Rose until various lawyers began to surface and demand that the plaintiff be paid millions of dollars

Staying with the Clippers

Jordan addresses the media on his free agency and why he stayed with the Clippers:

Originally with Dallas, I thought I wanted change. I wanted a bigger role and more responsibility, and I was ready to embrace and accept that challenge. But (when) I got by myself and I was able to think about everything that just happened, I realized that being with the Clippers was the best decision for me.

Has nightmares about Finals loss

Interview0 Comments

During an appearance on Bleacher Report Radio, James says he still feels the pain of his 2015 NBA Finals loss to the Golden State Warriors:

I just don’t feel like you ever move on from losing in the Finals. You feel like you’re right there. You have a great opportunity to do something special … I guess there’s nightmares, now, about them, about situations throughout the games, and it’s always replaying in my head. You know, it was definitely difficult, and I’m getting better every day, but you know, it takes quite a while for me to get out of the funk.

Joins Charlotte Hornets

Joins Team0 Comments

Lin announces he will sign with the Charlotte Hornets on a two year, $4.3M deal. He’s the latest offseason addition as GM Cho looks to upgrade the team’s offense:

We were looking to get more depth in the backcourt and we feel really good about the signing. He’s going to bring some energy to our backcourt and our second unit. He will be a great addition.

Lin is expected to serve as back up to Kemba Walker and run the second team offense:

The one thing he can really do is get into the paint and with our second unit that is important because he can create shots for others. We have several guys on the second unit that will benefit from that whether it’s Jeremy Lamb or Spencer Hawes, Frank Kaminsky or Marvin Williams.

I’m kind of speechless. This is special. To be able to hold this trophy and all the hard work we’ve put into it this season, this is special. We’re definitely a great team and a team that should go down in history as one of the best teams from top to bottom.

James, despite playing a historic series, falls to a 2-4 record in the Finals:

Doesn’t matter if I’m playing in Miami or playing in Cleveland or playing on Mars. You lose in the Finals, it’s disappointing.

It was a fun moment, but it will only mean something — and I’ll probably have a better answer for that question after we win that championship — but signature moments only come for players who are holding the trophy

James, despite being on the brink of elimination:

I feel confident because I’m the best player in the world

Warriors 103-82 Cavaliers Game 4

Tonight we came in with the mentality that we had to win this game

Iguodala on guarding James:

Make him work as hard as possible. Make him take tough shots. You look at his strengths, you look at his weaknesses, and you try to take him out of his comfort zone. Sounds easier said than done, but we all have a lot of talent and when we go out there we want to make our stamp on the game.

James:

Offensively we were terrible. Sometimes, your offense just doesn’t show up.

Curry:

I think I found something when it comes to how I’m going to be able to attack their pick-and-rolls. I’ll keep that in the memory bank going into Game 4.

Cavaliers 95-93 Warriors Game 2

Match Report0 Comments

For the Warriors, Thompson puts up 34 points and 5 rebounds. Curry, despite having 19 points, is only 5-23 from the field. Curry:

Shots I normally make I knew as soon as they left my hand that they were off. That doesn’t usually happen. Mechanically, I don’t know if there is an explanation for it. Just didn’t have a rhythm and didn’t find one the whole game.

James:

I tried to give it all to my teammates. And they do a great job of giving it back to me. Total team effort. To be back in the same position we were in three days ago and to come back and even the series is big time.

On two-year-old Riley:

I think she’s taking advantage of the moment for sure.

Harden on Game 5 loss:

Tried to do a little bit too much and turned the ball over and gave them easy baskets in transition. This isn’t where we wanted to end at. It’s a really good season for us. Next year we want to be better, and we will.

Coach McHale on Rockets:

The guys fought hard. One thing about the team is that they were battlers, and a lot of guys in that room you feel pretty comfortable going to war with.

We’re in Cleveland. Nothing is easy here.

Curry on concussion:

It was all minor stuff compared to how it looked. But I’ll get some good rest (Monday night) and be ready to go … since it happened to now, nothing has gotten worse.

Harden on Game 4:

I always want to take it out on my opponent in a good way. Just being aggressive, taking shots, getting to the basket, not really forcing anything and allowing the game to come to me.

Howard on possible game suspension:

I hope not. But there’s nothing I can do about it at this point. It’s never my intention to hurt anybody on the floor. My reaction was to try to get him off me, but I can’t react that way.

Cavaliers 114-111Hawks Game 3

Match Report0 Comments

The Cavaliers win 114-111. James scores 37 points, 18 rebounds and 13 assists, Dellavedova scores 17 points and Smith scores 17 points. Teague scores 30 points and Millsap scores 22 points for the Hawks. Cleveland leads East Finals 3-0. James on Game 3:

I gave everything I have.

On exhaustion colapse:

I’ve been better. I play to exhaustion. I give as much as I can give, and sometimes the body just shuts down…In overtime I asked to come out, but I actually had a second thought. I wouldn’t have felt right about the situation. It was mind over matter there for me. I’m playing through a lot but it doesn’t matter. If I’m putting on the uniform and I’m on the floor, I have to make things happen for our team. It’s that simple.

Coach Blatt on James:

He just wouldn’t let us lose.

Coach Budenholzer on Game 3 loss:

I’m very proud of the way our guys competed.

He’s had a brilliant season. The shooting is hard to describe because I don’t think we’ve ever seen anybody shoot the ball the way Steph does off the dribble, off the catch.

Curry on Game 3:

We understand it’s a special moment, it’s just we’re wrapped up in our day to day grind of preparing for games and going out and exerting all the effort we need to make this story happen. So it’s kind of hard to remove yourself from those emotions.

Howard on Game 3 loss:

We just can’t quit on each other. We’ve come too far. We’ve been through too many battles to just allow it to end like tonight … we’ve just got to man up.

Last season with Lakers

Makes Statement0 Comments

Bryant tells general manager Kupchak that the 2015-16 season will be his last season with the Lakers. Bryant is 36 years old, and will be entering his 20th season in the NBA. Kupchak:

I think first and foremost, he’s on the last year of a deal. There have been no discussions about anything going forward. I don’t think there will be. A year from now, if there’s something different to discuss, then it will be discussed then. I talk to him from time to time … and he is recovering. He’s running. He’s getting movement and strength in the shoulder. We expect a full recovery, but yeah, he’s much closer to the end than to the beginning.

On his birthday wish:

Just a Cavs win. That’s all I’m asking for.

Coach Budenholzer on Game 2 loss:

In the playoffs, it takes more. It takes better execution, better screening. You’ve got to do things harder.
