Voices displeasure at press conference
Mickelson voices his displeasure with leadership during a press conference following the United States 16-1/2 to 11-1/2 loss to Europe in the Ryder Cup. Mickelson mentions the pod system used by 2008 captain Paul Azinger where players were divided into small groups that ate, slept and practiced together:
So we were invested in the process. Unfortunately, we have strayed from a winning formula in 2008 for the last three Ryder Cups, and we need to consider maybe getting back to that formula that helped us play our best.
American team captain Tom Watson responds:
I had a different philosophy as far as being a captain of this team. You know, it takes 12 players to win. It’s not pods. It’s 12 players.
Withdraws from BMW Championship
0 CommentsMickelson withdraws from BMW Championship, citing his position in the tournament and the upcoming Ryder Cup as reasons. Mickelson is 14 strokes off the lead held by Sergio Garcia as he exits the tourney. Mickelson could face discipline by the PGA, as an injury or family issue are usually considered acceptable reasons to leave mid-tournament.
My primary goal is to rest and prepare for the Ryder Cup. Without a chance to contend at the Tour Championship, the most important thing for me now is to prepare for the Ryder Cup.
