For me, I never want to do the same thing twice with anything that I do, particularly with my music. So after my first record, True Romance, came out, I wanted to challenge myself and my audience and push it in a different direction. As a live performer, it’s always been kind of more rock and roll, so I wanted to do something that would complement that it all just kind of made sense for me to go that way. I was in Sweden making songs with some of my best friends, and that was what was coming out. I always like to record quickly, and that kind of music really suits powering through it and just making as many songs as possible. So it was cool. That’s kind of how it ended up there.

It’s a weird thing to have two shows that are incredibly fun to do in different ways. Letting things run their course is a good thing and continuing to do work that feels fun, inspiring, and fresh is great. I don’t take for granted that I get to do a show as fun and popular as The League. Everybody involved is so funny and talented that I can’t wait to see what they all do going forward. It’s been a really fun show, but it’s never a bad thing to leave a party a little early.

Everything was about presentation. Everything is a strategy for the goal. I remember I was just trying to figure out the character; I was like, “J.C., what’s he thinking here?” and he would say, “I don’t know, but his hair is going to be amazing!” And I was like, “Yeah, but what does he want?” and he was like, “I don’t know, but his suits are going to be so nice!” Finally he said, “Look, his suits have nothing to do with vanity. His suits are suits of armor.” Everything is about presentation, what is showing.

Girl, you know I did. No, there’s no way I had my stuff together. I literally stop and I’m like, what would Jane do? Which is completely terrible, but I do, because of her patience and her understanding. I’m Puerto Rican, and we don’t own that! But it is really awesome to play such a grounded character. I’m a big fan of her.
