Stephen Edwin King is born in Portland, Maine to seaman Donald King and Nellie Ruth.
Shortly after King is born, his father leaves the family under the pretense of “going to buy a pack of cigarettes”, leaving his mother to raise him and his adopted brother on her own. After several moves to Wisconsin, Indiana, and Connecticut, the Kings move back to Maine, where King says he feels most at home.
