Sky News service added

Sky announces that its broadcast news service will now be available to view on Xbox 360. The new service will enable millions of Xbox customers in the US and UK to access Sky News directly through their consoles. Xbox Live customers will see the Sky News icon on the TV section of their homepage and will be able to access the live feed 24 hours a day.

Sky News is consistently exploring opportunities to expand our global reach. Making Sky News available on Xbox was an ideal way to achieve this. With a growing US footprint of a million users and a US news team, we’re thrilled that our coverage will be showcased to millions of Xbox customers.

China Xbox One launch announced

Microsoft announces Xbox One will launch in China on September 23, 2014, making it the first foreign company to sell consoles in the world’s third biggest gaming market. A ban on consoles was lifted in China earlier this year. The console will cost 3,699 yuan ($600) without the Kinect motion detection system and 4,299 yuan ($700) with Kinect, about $200 more than the consoles cost in the USA. Last year, a deal was reached with Chinese internet TV set-top box maker BesTV New Media Co Ltd to form a joint venture to manufacture the consoles in Shanghai’s Free Trade Zone.

Try-before-you-buy demos

An update lets Xbox One users try game demos and unlock the full version if they like the game. Speaking to Eurogamer, Chris Charla, the head of Microsoft’s ID@Xbox independent games program, says the trial feature arrived with the latest update to the console. It’s been feasible on Xbox Live for Xbox 360 for years, particularly with regard to games offered on its indie channel.

Xbox Live issues

According to the Xbox Live status page, Xbox live users are having problems with services (Twitch, Netflix, PBS, etc.) due to connection problems.

$75 Xbox One upgrade credit

Certain Xbox 360 owners receive a message offering them $75 in credit for their Xbox account if they buy an Xbox One from any retailer. The company does not give any information about what the criteria for being selected for the promotion are:

Evo sponsors announced

D’Ron Maingrette, a Super Smash Bros announcer, tweets a list of the sponsors for the 2014 Evo fighting game tournament.  The list includes previous sponsors like IGN and Xbox, but this is the first time Nintendo sponsors the event. It marks a change in attitude from 2013’s Evo tournament when they attempt to block Super Smash Bros from being streamed from the event.

Xbox One Console Unveiled

Microsoft unveils the Xbox One, which will be released later this year. Don Mattrick, the president of interactive entertainment business for Microsoft, said the company spent four years developing the “all-in-one home entertainment system”.
