Pyeongchang, South Korea, wins bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. This will be South Korea’s first time hosting the Olympic games. Pyenogchang achieved 63 votes, beating out Annecy (25 votes) and Munich (7 votes). The voting process took only minutes, making it the quickest in history. Cho Yang-ho, Pyeongchang’s bid leader states:
I had some confidence, but I didn’t expect 63.
POCOG president re-elected
Kim Jin-sun is re-elected as president of the Pyeongchang 2018 Organizing Committee. He promises to establish concrete goals under the ‘New Horizon’ vision and make sure all preparations occur on schedule. He also plans to ensure that athletes are at the heart of the planning.
I will make sure that all infrastructures, such as venues, transportation networks and other related facilities, are completed on time as planned.
IOC Third Inspection
0 CommentsThe IOC completes its third inspection visit to Pyeongchang and reports the Pyeongchang 2018 Organizing Committee (POCOG) continues to make steady progress. The IOC identifies a number of key areas that require focus over the next 6 months, including: marketing, venue construction, test events, and Games services:
We have had three excellent days of meetings and I’d like to congratulate President Kim of POCOG and his team for the quality of their work. We were able to see that a large amount has been accomplished by POCOG and its partners since our last visit in June 2013.
Sochi 2014 officials meeting
0 CommentsPOCOG holds a workshop with members of the IOC Observer Program at the Sochi 2014 Winter Games. More than 250 people are in attendance, discussing topics such as : games operations, accommodation, transportation, culture, marketing, technology, and accessibility.
I hope that this workshop serves as an opportunity for everyone to further advance communication and cooperation. We have one goal, and that is to deliver a successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang.
‘New Horizons’ vision
During a debriefing of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, the Pyeongchang 2018 Organizing Committee (POCOG) states that a ‘New Horizons’ theme will be central to their games. Many new winter sports facilities will be built for the games, including areas for figure skating, hockey, speed skating, luge, bobsled, and skeleton events.
Our vision is very clear: new horizons, developing industries, building a hub of winter sports in Gangwon province. Our Games will also be a Games of culture, environment and peace.
Preparations on track
The International Olympic Committee says that preparations for the 2018 Winter Olympics are on track. This is contrast to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, which has had chronic construction delays:
The 2018 Games are on the right track but it is clear that much work remains. With only four years to go until the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games begin, it was important for the commission to be able to survey the progress being made on the different venues. We are pleased to see that work on key sites like the sliding center and coastal Olympic Village has begun.
First domestic partnership
0 CommentsThe 2018 Winter Olympics sign their first domestic sponsor, South Korean telecom giant, KT Corp. There was much concern over the past few months that Pyeongchang had not signed a domestic sponsor after being awarded the Olympics in 2011.
We’re delighted to have KT on board as our first partner. This marks a great leap forward in our Games preparations. I believe that the partnership will provide further strength to our vision of opening up New Horizons through organizing an Athletes-oriented and Competition-centered Games
