NewsBlocks launches Blockchain-based trusted news platform

The Social News Company Ltd. launches NewsBlocks, a blockchain platform for building next-generation news applications, such as trusted news feeds, fact-checking systems and fake news detectors. NewsBlocks starts from the insight that the traditional news article — a form of news designed to be printed on paper and thrown away each day — is not well suited to the digital age of mobile, instant data. The project’s primary goal is to convert all the world’s news articles into data, and store it permanently on a tamper-proof, censorship-resistant blockchain, where it can be searched, sorted, filtered and organised by anyone in new ways to create trusted news applications. Because each piece of data also has a price, NewsBlocks also creates the first global marketplace for news data.

Mark Devlin, CEO:

Once news is data, it can — for the first time — be verified, stored and priced so that anyone can use it to create the next-generation of news products and services.

Too Many Blogs interview

The band are interviewed by Too Many Blogs, talking about their upcoming album, Build A Tower, which will be released on May 4.

The Star Wars thing is just a coincidence, we won’t be doing a gig in Jedi robes or anything.

On songwriting:

We have developed a lot as musicians since Cavalcade, so there is more invention in terms of melody, rhythm, song structure…Some tracks are very personal and explore the feeling of being in love with someone and the delicious fragility of it, the sense that it could disappear before your eyes (‘Supernatural’). Some tracks refer, very specifically, to the external political environment (‘Lunatic’/’On the TV’).  Musically, it’s probably more consistent in terms of style, as the album was written in a tighter time-frame than the last album. It’s pretty inventive – hopefully, our existing fans will love it and, hopefully, it continues the work of the previous album (in winning over most people that hear it).

UFC Bad Blood: McGregor Spars with Southpaws

UFC releases a second trailer for Bad Blood, showing McGregor sparring with southpaws, including Wallace.

I’m certainly preparing a lot more specific. Usually, I don’t prepare specific, because they always pull out, every time. I know Nate will show up. This time I know this fight will go down. This time I know I’ll be facing a tall, lanky southpaw, with the height, the weight, and the reach on me. So I am preparing accordingly…I’m feeling very confident. It’s gonna be a bad night for Nate.

For the first fight we didn’t even have one training session with a similar opponent. Now, it’s all we’ve done for the last few months.

Bad Blood preview

McGregor and Diaz appear in a trailer for Bad Blood, which premieres August 14 at 10pm/7pm ET/PT on FS1. Diaz:

They thought he was untouchable. Like he was Superman.

We were certain to fight each other for a long time. And then it came about. It came about quickly..I was dominating the fight, and then, like that, I lost. How can I slap a guy’s face all around the Octagon for eight minutes, and then lose that way?

Engine failure ‘very heavy’ title blow

Makes Statement

Rossi says that the engine failure at the Italian GP has hurt his chances of winning the title.

This year I am faster, I am more competitive. In the practice every time I am stronger but unfortunately I made a mistake in Austin, but Lorenzo and Marquez also made mistakes. But unfortunately this one’s very heavy. It was from Misano 2007 that my bike [last] broke in the race. But it can happen. I think that there was something wrong with both engines between Lorenzo and me, but the bigger difference is that Lorenzo’s happened in the warm-up and mine happened in the race. It’s a great shame also for the championship because I take the zero and also Lorenzo and Marquez arrived first and second, so now the distance from the top is 37 points. It’s very bad, it’s quite a big gap but the beautiful thing, the good thing, the positive aspect is that I was fast, I was strong. I was very, very fast in the race.

Local newspaper closures ‘blown out of proportion’

Speaking to the House of Commons culture select committee, Highfield says the number of local newspapers closed over the last decade has been “blown out of all proportion”, with most of the 300 being shut not “papers of record” that are vital to most UK communities.

This is something that is often blown out of all proportion. The papers that have been closed were often the freesheets that were opened in the 1990s to mop up low-yielding advertising revenues when the times were good… I think you’ll find the numbers of papers of record that have closed over the last decade is incredibly low. That is something that needs to be understood.

France curbs blood transfusions

Makes Statement

French Health Minister Touraine says travellers coming back from any outbreak zones of the Zika virus will need to wait at least 28 days before giving blood to avoid any risk of transmission, and advises pregnant women to inform the authorities if they had travelled to any of the zones. Eighteen cases have been reported in travellers in France.

Brazil: Zika infections from blood transfusions

Makes Statement

Brazilian health officials say they have confirmed two cases of transmission of Zika through transfusions of blood from donors. Doctors say genetic testing confirmed that a man who received a blood transfusion using blood from a donor with Zika in March 2015 became infected with the virus, although the patient did not develop symptoms. Earlier, the health department of Campinas, an industrial city near Sao Paulo, said a man with gunshot wounds became infected with Zika after multiple blood transfusions in April 2015 that included blood donated by an infected person.

The two cases can be considered transmission of the virus through blood transfusion, with greater certainty in the first because we did genetic sequencing comparing the virus in the donor and to the virus in the recipient.

Asks blood donors to wait 28 days

Makes Statement

The American Red Cross asks prospective donors who have visited Mexico, the Caribbean, or Central or South America during the past four weeks to wait at least 28 days before giving blood. The organization says:

The risk of transmission through blood donation continues to be extremely low in the continental U.S.

France: gay men can donate blood

Law approved

By Spring of 2016, gay men in France will be allowed to donate blood, ending a 33 year ban that was put in place in1983. Under new rules, men who haven’t had sex in four months before donating, or have only had one partner will be allowed to donate. If this restriction shows no risk within the year, they will be able to donate blood regularly like the general population. French health minister:

Giving blood is an act of generosity, of citizenship, which cannot be conditioned to sexual orientation. While respecting complete patient safety, today we are ending a taboo and discrimination

Bloomberg Business interview

Altman is interviewed by Chang on Bloomberg Business.

It’s been a really fun job. We’re sort of the flagbearer for this movement towards more innovation, and more startups, and it’s a particularly fun time to be in that place. We’ve really been able to scale up the organization and the number of startups quite a bit. The best part is that we get to work with the most incredible startups each day…We think that generally our role is to increase the innovation in the world as much as we can, and we are not tied to any sector, or stage, or startup. We see a lot of new ways to do that. If we can fund 10,000 companies over the next decade with our fellowship that would be incredible.

‘Swedes didn’t blow up the Word Trade Center’

Trump is interviewed by Tapper on CNN’s State Of The Union. Tapper asks about the “Muslim question” controversy:

Tapper: [Y]ou are running to be president of United States of America. That includes millions of peaceful, law-abiding Muslims who love this country. This man said, quote, we have a problem in this country called Muslims. You’re not responsible for what he says, but this is unvarnished ignorant bigotry. You are a leader. You are the frontrunner in the Republican race. Do you not have a responsibility to call out the hatred?
Trump: We could be politically correct, if you want, but are you trying to say we don’t have a problem. I think everybody would agree. I have friends that are Muslims. They’re great people, amazing people. And most Muslims like most everyone these are fabulous people, but we certainly do have a problem. I mean, you have a problem throughout the world.
Tapper: What’s the problem?
Tump: Well, you have radicals that are doing things. It wasn’t people from Sweden that blow up the World Trade Center, Jake.

Martin: Trump ‘makes my blood boil’

Writes Article

In a Univision op-ed Martin criticizes Trump’s treatment of Jose Ramos.

The fact that an individual like Donald Trump, a candidate for the presidency of the United States for the Republican party, has the audacity to continue to gratuitously harass the Latin community makes my blood boil. When did this character assume he could make comments that are racist, absurd, and above all incoherent and ignorant about us Latinos?..Jorge Ramos was doing HIS JOB as a journalist at a press conference in which he appeared freely and democratically, representing one of the most important Latin television networks in the world. But this new character in American politics verbally attacks him and ejects him from the press conference.

Let’s show that our Latin race is to be respected, let’s not allow a political hopeful to plant his campaign in insult and humiliation. Let’s demand respect for those first generations of Latinos who came to the United States and opened a path for us. We have fought for every right that we have today…Xenophobia as a political strategy is the lowest you can go in search of political power.

Bloomberg Business interview

Gouw and Fonstad talk to Chang and Johnson on Bloomberg West about how Aspect Ventures looks to help start companies for the long-term and where they see growth. Gouw:

This is our entrepreneurial thing. It’s like when entrepreneurs see a vision and you are both called to something. And we think this is a great time to be focused on seed and early-stage investing around mobility as a theme, through the stack, from enterprise to consumer. And to work with someone you know for two decades.

There is an explosion of opportunity in the mobile space, our firm will be focussing exclusively in the mobile space, but we define it much more broadly than you’ve seen in the press in the past. We think that that mobile will infuse and touch every aspect of the software stack.

Bloomberg West interview

Gouw and Cassidy discuss gender bias in the VC industry with Bloomberg’s Chang on Bloomberg West. Cassidy:

At the end of the day, our own data shows that women face discrimination and bias. 67% of women tech founders said they encounter that. When you try to change any ecosystem — particularly ones in The Valley — you start with what’s possible. In fact, entrepreneurship thrives on the idea of possibility. Have we faced bias? Yes. Have men faced bias, who are older than the young 22-year-old founder? They have too. The point is if we want to make progress on this issue, we do actually need to showcase what is possible. The return to possibility is one of the ways, in fact, to enable change. It is important to amplify what’s possible in the women entrepreneurs who are succeeding in The Valley every day.

Culture is actually important in people’s ability to succeed or not succeed in a particular environment. What Sukindar wrote in Choose Possibility is important for two reasons. One, the fastest way to make a change is to start something new, and the second is it brings a positive narrative of people who are succeeding and killing and starting things in Silicon Valley.

Claims ‘blood’ comment was about nose

Makes Statement

Trump’s campaign releases a statement about his ‘blood comment’ about Kelly:

Mr Trump made Megyn Kelly look really bad – she was a mess with her anger and totally caught off guard. Mr Trump said “blood was coming out of her eyes and whatever” meaning nose, but wanted to move on to more important topics. Only a deviant would think anything else. This related to the debate, which because of Mr Trump had 24 million viewers – the biggest in cable news history.

Kelly ‘blood’ comment

Makes Statement

During an interview with CNN’s Lemon, Trump continues to criticize Kelly

Well, I just don’t respect her as a journalist. I don’t think she’s very good. I think she’s highly overrated… She starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions, and you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her…wherever. She was, in my opinion, she was off-base.

Obama ‘blocks’ Mugabe

Makes Statement

President Obama blocks President Mugabe from attending his special meeting at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Press secretary Charamba says Mugabe is unmoved by Obama’s visit to the AU headquarters, describing the event as just “a visit by any other visitor”.

Obama has come to Ethiopia for an official visit and to address the staff there…If you are afraid of him, we are not because he is just a Head of State who visits Africa and the AU headquarters by virtue of his ancestry.  There will be a report on the summit in January where we will get a briefing on the visitor who is called Barack Obama ‘who we received and went back home happy’. . . He did not come to visit Mugabe. He went to Ethiopia and asked to visit the HQ. I did not see you writing that Mugabe snubs Obama when he went for the Ebola summit (in New York)

Writes two blog posts

Writes Article

Abdulazeez writes two Islam-themes blog posts, the only posts on his blog. In the first, A Prison Called Dunya, Abdulazeez uses the hypothetical example of a prisoner who is told he would be given a test that would either take him out of his earthly prison—or send him into a more restrictive environment.

I would imagine that any sane person would devote their time to mastering the information on the study guide and stay patient with their studies, only giving time for the other things around to keep themselves focused on passing the exam. They would do this because they know and have been told that they will be rewarded with pleasures that they have never seen. [This life is a test] designed to separate the inhabitants of Paradise from the inhabitants of Hellfire.

The second, Understanding Islam: The Story of the Three Blind Men, uses the example of blind men who feel an elephant but can’t quite tell what the creature is. He says Muslims have a similar understanding of the earliest companions of the Prophet Muhammad, who he says were not like priests living in monasteries is not true, but were actually a mayor of a town, governor of a state, or leader of an army at the frontlines.

We ask Allah to make us follow their path. To give us a complete understanding of the message of Islam, and the strength the live by this knowledge, and to know what role we need to play to establish Islam in the world.

President blocks social media

The government of Burundi blocks mobile access to social media sites –including Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and Tango — in an effort to crack down on protesters use the messaging services on the sites to coordinate demonstrations over President Nkurunziza’s re-election efforts. Nkurunziza also cuts Burundian phone lines and nonstate media and ban protests. Human Rights Watch:

Government restrictions on communications not only violate basic media freedom but deprive many Burundians of the right to information about events that affect them directly…These radio stations in Burundi are doing their job by covering the news…The Burundian authorities should respect people’s right to demonstrate peacefully.

Bloomberg interview

In an interview with Bloomberg, Ginsberg talks about equal pay for women, birth control and abortion access.

If the woman has the means to go to a neighboring state, if she can buy a plane ticket or a bus ticket and afford the cost of the procedure, she’s safe. And she and her daughters will always have the choice. The people who don’t have the choice are poor women.

On her male colleagues:

I was a law school teacher. And that’s how I regard my role here with my colleagues, who haven’t had the experience of growing up female and don’t fully appreciate the arbitrary barriers that have been put in women’s way.

And how she believes a female president can counter “unconscious bias” toward women.

But I have to add a caveat. I know we have seen women heads of state in Israel, in India. And that doesn’t necessarily mean that the rest of society will progress along the same lines…Yes, there are blind spots. But in time they will go.

Kirk and Turning Point are profiled by Bloomberg. The article says that the group’s paid workers are each supposed to make at least 1,500 student contacts per semester. and that about 20,000 people have attended a Turning Point event, posted on social media, or volunteered for the group’s events. The organization claims it registered 10,30 voters in Florida in April 2015, and is looking to recruit at least 1000 activists in key battleground states each month. Calls whistleblowers ‘whiners’

Makes Statement

Reid says that the government whistleblowers who accused him of using political pressure to obtain special treatment for a Las Vegas casino are “a bunch of whiners.” Reid stated that it’s his job to pressure the federal government into fast-tracking decisions concerning his constituents’ needs.

If I had to do over again, I would do it again. If I did it over again, I’d probably be stronger than I was…The homeland security report came from a bunch of whiners at the Department of Homeland Security who they felt I guess that they weren’t included in my conversation. Bloom appears as a guest on Conan to promote his latest film, The Hobbit. He also talks about having Sir Ian McKellen as a roommate, his experience stripping down in Zulu, and creating a porno film involving elves and Middle Earth.

The truth is there won’t be because J.R. Tolkien has the rights. The estate sold the rights for both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, but nothing else. I was doing press with Evangeline Lilly and Lee Pace recently. We both play elves and we could do an elven spinoff. Bloody Elbow interview

Ross talks to Bloody Elbow about UFC Fight Pass and the WWE Network services being the future of the industries.

They are going to be able to control their destiny – good, bad, or indifferent as far as the television product is concerned. I think what they have done is show a lot of other networks what can be accomplished by building your own digital network. I think we will see more various entities follow the WWE model. They may learn from the WWE’s mistakes, as with any business, and see where they fell or fumbled.

The challenge always seems to be the same thing, to tell a story as well as you can. To whatever extent I’m able to assess my contribution at the very beginning, having felt the pull of the orbit of another world, I try to step backwards and ask myself if I can serve that story as the person I’m going to be telling that story with. I try to do that, but I think I’m usually already too far gone anyhow. It’s a token gesture rather than a real one.
