Reverend Al Sharpton interview
Winfrey interviews Reverend Al Sharpton and discusses his role in the civil rights movement and his new book.
Every morning I believe you should. I don’t believe I’ve prayed unless I am on my knees. Civil rights social justice not black rights civil rights for everyone. That’s what I do that’s my calling its what I’m good at.
Funeral
Hundreds gather in Brooklyn for Garner’s funeral, including his six children. Reverend Sharpton speaks:
Let’s not play games with this. You don’t need no training to stop choking a man saying I can’t breathe. You don’t need no cultural orientation to stop choking a man saying I can’t breathe. You need to be prosecuted and you need to be put away.
Mayor hosts reform discussion
New York Mayor de Blasio hosts a discussion with the police commissioner and the Rev. Sharpton to try to ease tensions with minority communities after Garner’s death. Sharpton:
If Dante wasn’t your son, he’d be a candidate for a chokehold. And we’ve got to deal with that reality.
Politics Nation interview
Johnson, friend and witness of deceased teenager Brown describes the fatal attack and shooting of Brown:
I know what a taser looks like, a taser gun looks like and I know what a regular gun looks like. When I looked at the officer I was staring dead in front of the barrel and almost a second later the gun went off.
Owes 4.5 million in taxes
0 CommentsSharpton owes an estimated 4.5 million in unpaid taxes personally and from his for-profit business. Sharpton claims the debts are being paid thanks to increased revenue from donors when speaking to The New York Times. Sharpton:
You can say I’m not a great administrator. You can’t say that I’m not committed.
On high alert
Civil rights activist, Sharpton is on high alert regarding the grand jury decision in the case of Brown.
We have been planning for vigils and non-violent demonstrations when the Ferguson grand jury hands down its ruling, which is expected to come any day. I have pledged to the mother and father of Brown that I will be there with them when the decision is announced.
‘An absolute blow’
Sharpton responds to the Ferguson Grand Jury decision by calling it ‘an absolute blow’. Sharpton says he will hold a press conference in Ferguson on Tuesday 25 Nov.
It was expected, but still an absolute blow to those of us that wanted to see a fair and open trial. I think that it is clear that even when you see a blow coming … it still hurts nonetheless. Ferguson is not just Missouri. We can lose a round, but the fight is not over.
Family tells Sharpton to stay away
A source close the Scott family says they do not want the same kind of media attention that surrounded the death of Michael Brown:
We don’t want another Ferguson type of circus here.
Scott family attorney says said they appreciate Sharpton’s support but “the funeral is only going to be close family members.”
The Reverend Al has called and expressed his support and condolences. The family is very appreciative.
Sharpton says he has been in touch with the Scott family and their lawyers but insists he has no plans to go down.
They are in mourning and we would never come unless they asked. We’re willing to be helpful to the family but only when needed.
