Completes Moon mission
China completes its first return mission to the moon with the successful re-entry and landing of an unmanned probe in northern China’s Inner Mongolia region. The probe was on an eight-day mission to fly around the moon and head back to Earth. The mission tests technology to be used in the Chang’e-5, China’s fourth lunar probe, which will gather samples from the moon’s surface and will be launched around 2017
Expects to win South China Sea case
The Philippines expects a United Nations tribunal at The Hague on July 7 to 13 to rule in its favour in the dispute with China over territories in the South China Sea. China has refused to participate in the arbitration proceedings. The upcoming hearings will decide whether the tribunal has jurisdiction over the case. Foreign secretary del Rosario will lead the government delegation, assisted by US-based lawyers.Spokesperson:
We prepared a strong case. We believe we stand on strong legal ground. We believe the tribunal will look at our case with favour. We are confident of the Philippine position on this matter.
Chinese test mind-powered car
Nakai University in China reveal a car that is controlled by the users brain activity — an electroencephalo-graph car. Drivers use a headset to monitor brain activity that direct the vehicle. Head of Research:
We connect our equipment with CAN (Controller Area Network) of the car for communication, which is a breakthrough because in the past the human brain signal can only control stuffs in visual environment or a simple thing like a wheelchair…Now we can do it on an entire car, and we are the first in China.
Explosion video
A witness captures a huge explosion at a petrochemical plant in east China’s Shandong province on Thursday. Reports say that more than 200 firefighters and 40 fire trucks are battling the fire after tanks containing liquefied hydrocarbon leaked and caused the blast. The plant is situated in Rizhao.
World’s largest telescope under construction
China is hoping to finish construction of the world’s largest radio telescope by 2016. The telescope is built upon a naturally-formed bowl-like valley in the southern part of Guizhou. The huge dish is actually hung over the ground supported by thousands of steel pillars and cables and has perimeter of about 1.6 km. The telescope’s reflector is 500 metres in diameter and made up of 4,450 panels. Each panel is an equilateral triangle with a side length of 11 metres. Scientist:
Having a more sensitive telescope, we can receive weaker and more distant radio messages. It will help us to search for intelligent life outside of the galaxy and explore the origins of the universe.
China protests Japan visit
China shows says it is upset about Japan’s decision to host Lee, an opponent of the integration of Taiwan with the mainland. Spokesperson:
We urge the Japanese side to abide by the principles enshrined in the four political documents signed by China and Japan, including the China-Japan Joint Statement, and fulfill its solemn commitments to China. We strongly oppose any country providing a stage for ‘Taiwan independence’ activities and take strong umbrage at Japan allowing Lee to visit. Lee’s contemptible acts have made compatriots from both sides see more clearly the extreme harms ‘Taiwan independence’ forces do to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and the integral benefit of the Chinese nation, and will surely be scorned by compatriots from both sides.
Escalator swallows Chinese woman
A woman (Xiang Liujuan) dies after falling into an escalator in a shopping centre in central China. Surveillance footage shows a metal panel at the top of the escalator giving way, causing the woman and her toddler to stumble. Employees standing at the top of the escalators tried to pull the woman to safety, but were unable to stop her from being pulled in. The woman pushes her child to safety. The incident in Jingzhou, in Hubei province, has sparked widespread anger at the department store.Local authorities are investigating the incident.
Stock markets slide
Turmoil returns to the Chinese stock market as shares suffer their worst fall in eight years, knocking commodity prices and fuelling jitters among investors in London. The Shanghai Composite Index drops 8.5% at 3725.56 – its worst fall since 2007.
Dinosaur eggs seized
Authorities raid a house and seize 231 fossilised dinosaur eggs and skeletal remains at Guangdong province. The skeletons are identified as a Psittacosaurus. The residents have been interrogated.

Death toll rises to 112
The death toll rises to 112 after a massive blast site in the Chinese port of Tianjin on Sunday as teams scramble to clear dangerous chemical contamination. Hundreds of people are reported injured and 85 firefighters and ten others are missing since the fire and explosions.
Formally arrested
Phan-Gillis is formally arrested, after being held for six months accused of stealing state secrets. He husband said he decided to go public about her circumstances ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S. Her family deny the allegations. The US government has not commented. China’s Foreign Ministry confirms Phan-Gillis is under investigation.
Mrs Phan-Gillis is suspected of carrying out activities endangering national security, and is currently being investigated by relevant departments. We hope that the outside world will respect China’s handling of this case according to law.
China: No violations of territorial waters
China says it will not stand for violations of its territorial waters in the name of freedom of navigation, as the United States considers sailing warships close to China’s artificial islands in the South China Sea. Foreign Ministry :
We will never allow any country to violate China’s territorial waters and airspace in the Spratly Islands, in the name of protecting freedom of navigation and overflight.

After months of internal debate, the White House permits the Defense Department to sail one ship near a reef in the South China Sea that China claims. Carter says the U.S. has the right to operate near the Chinese structures.

Beijing issues smog red alert, ruling that all schools and businesses be shut down.
Released
Pu is released early from Beijing’s number One Detention Centre after serving 19 months for “inciting ethnic hatred” and “picking quarrels” on social media post. He was originally going to be detained for three years. He is released under “residential surveillance”, and has 10 days to decide whether to appeal against his conviction and sentence.
Halts trading for second time

Threatens Taiwan
After the island elects pro-independence leader Tsai, China warns that Taiwan should “abandon its hallucinations about pushing for independence”.
If there is no peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan’s new authority will find the sufferings of the people it wishes to resolve on the economy, livelihood and its youth will be as useless as looking for fish in a tree.
Launches ‘hack-proof satellite
China launches the world’s first quantum satellite, which will help it establish “hack-proof” communications between space and the ground. The satellite is named after the ancient Chinese scientist and philosopher Micius. The satellite will create pairs of so-called entangled photons – tiny sub-atomic particles of light whose properties are dependent on each other – beaming one half of each pair down to base stations in China and Austria. Because its quantum state cannot be observed without changing it. it is useful for ensuring secure communication.
Longest glass bottom bridge in world opens
The world’s highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge opens Saturday in China’s Zhangjiajie mountains. Made up of 99 6m-wide panels, the structure is 430 metres long and suspended 300 metres above the earth, the bridge spans the canyon between two mountain cliffs in Zhangjiajie park in China’s central Hunan province. The bridge was designed by Dotan. Only 8,000 people each day will be allowed to cross the bridge. Tourists will have to book their tickets a day in advance, at a cost of 138 yuan ($20). Cameras and selfie sticks are banned, and people wearing stilettos will not be allowed to walk on the bridge. Tourist:
