Winter is Coming

In the Free City of Pentos on the continent of Essos, her brother Viserys, played by Harry Lloyd, informs her that she has been betrothed to the Dothraki horselord Khal Drogo, played by Jason Momoa. Viserys warns that she must go through with the marriage as it is part of a bargain by him and Magister Illyrio, played by Roger Allam, to assemble an army for Viserys to challenge for the throne of Westeros. During the wedding, several Dothraki tribesmen fight to the death over slave women. Daenerys is counseled by Ser Jorah Mormont, a Westerosi knight played by Iain Glen, that this is part of their warlike tradition. She is presented with wedding gifts including a white stallion from Khal Drogo, books of stories and songs from the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros by Ser Jorah, and three petrified dragon eggs from Illyrio. Although she is terrified, she consummates her marriage with Khal Drogo in traditional Dothraki fashion.

The Kingsroad

Clarke appears in episode two of season one, The Kingsroad as Daenerys Targaryen alongside Iain Glen as Ser Jorah Mormont, Harry Lloyd as Viserys Targaryen and Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo. Ser Jorah reveals that he is in exile for the crime of selling slaves in Westeros, and counsels Daenerys that her role as khaleesi, or queen of the Dothraki horde, will become easier. At the advice of serving girl Doreah, played by Roxanne McKee, she begins to assert herself sexually with Khal Drogo.

Clarke appears as Daenerys Targaryen in the third episode of season one, Lord Snow, alongside Harry Lloyd as Viserys Targaryen, Iain Glen as Ser Jorah Mormont and Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo. As khaleesi, or queen, she orders the Dothraki horde to halt at her whim. Viserys, whoo is riding with the horde, objects to taking orders from his sister and threatens her. He is subdued by Rakharo, played by Elyes Gabel, who is a bloodrider to Khal Drogo. Viserys is forced to walk as a punishment. Daenerys learns she is pregnant with Khal Drogo’s heir.

A Golden Crown

In Vaes Dothrak, Daenerys places one of her dragon eggs into the brazier to see if it will be affected by fire. Despite the heat, she is unaffected when she holds the stone egg, although a serving girl is burned when she touches it. She is summoned by the wise women of the Dothraki dosh khaleen and is made to eat a stallion’s heart to prove her strength as mother to the heir of the khal. Viserys attempts to steal Daenerys’s most valuable wedding gift in order to raise an army of mercenaries, but is stopped by Ser Jorah. Viserys then threatens Daenerys and her unborn child and breaks Dothraki law by drawing a blade within Vaes Dothrak. He is punished by Khal Drogo with an agonizing death.

You Win or You Die

Clarke appears as Daenerys Targaryen in You Win or You Die, the seventh episode of season one, alongside Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo and Iain Glen as the Westerosi knight Ser Jorah Mormont. Daenerys attempts to convince Khal Drogo to cross the Narrow Sea to take the Iron Throne of Westeros, but he responds that his heir does not need an iron chair to be a king. Daenerys visits the market in Vaes Dothrak, where Ser Jorah prevents an apparent attempt by Westerosi King Robert Baratheon to assassinate her with poisoned wine. Learning of the attempt, Khal Drogo promises that he will conquer Westeros and the Iron Throne.

The Pointy End

Clarke appears as Daenerys Targaryen in The Pointy End, the eighth episode of the first season, alongside Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo and Iain Glen as the Westerosi knight Ser Jorah Mormont. After vowing to conquer the Iron Throne of Westeros, Khal Drogo leads the Dothraki horde west through Essos towards the Narrow Sea crossing. The khalasar raid villages to take slaves to sell to finance the war. Despite the advice of Ser Jorah, Daenerys orders them to stop raping the women they have captured, and takes the women into her service to protect them, angering the Dothraki warriors. Khal Drogo fights a duel to the death with a warrior who insults Daenerys and although he is victorious, he suffers a deep wound. Daenerys insists that a female healer from the captured village be allowed to treat the injury, although Khal Drogo’s Dothraki bloodriders protest that she is a witch.

Fire and Blood

Daenerys awakes from unconsciousness and is told by Ser Jorah that her and Drogo’s son, Rhaego, is deformed and stillborn. Drogo is alive, but in a vegetative state, and the khalasar has moved on without them. Daenerys chooses to end Drogo’s life rather than let him linger. She has a funeral pyre built to burn Drogo’s body and the healer woman who betrayed him. She then walks into the flames herself and is apparently consumed. The next morning, it is revealed that she has survived, and the dragon eggs she placed in the flames have hatched.

Baelor

Clarke’s character Daenerys Targaryen appears in Baelor, the ninth episode of season one, alongside Jason Momoa as her husband, Khal Dothraki horselord Drogo, and Iain Glen as Ser Jorah Mormont, the Westerosi knight. Daenerys grows concerned that a wound Khal Drogo sustained fighting for her honour is growing infected. When Khal Drogo falls from his horse, a sign of weakness among the Dothraki, she insists that he be treated by a healer woman captured from a village by the Dothraki. Ser Jorah warns her to leave, as if Khal Drogo dies the new leader of the Dothraki will kill her unborn son as his heir. The healer promises to save Drogo but says she must take a life in return. She leads his stallion into his tent and begins to sacrifice it, angering the Dothraki and forcing Ser Jorah to kill a warrior who threatens Daenerys. Daenerys begins to go into labour, but none of the Dothraki midwives will help her as they believe she is cursed.

After the death of her husband Khal Drogo, played by Jason Momoa, she leads the few remaining members of her Dothraki khalasar into the Red Waste desert land of Essos. Ser Jorah tells her that she is surrounded by powerful enemies who will kill her and take her dragons. Desperate and facing starvation for her and her people, she sends three of her Dothraki bloodriders in different directions to find refuge for the group.

Trapped in the Red Waste of the continent of Esteros with the remainder of her Dothraki khalasar, she is informed by a returning bloodrider that the city of Qarth is nearby and will give her group refuge as she is ‘The Mother of Dragons.’ Her counseler, the Westerosi knight Ser Jorah Mormont, played by Iain Glen, advises her that the area around the city is called the Garden of Bones as people who are turned away from its gates perish there from exposure and thirst. The group travels to the city and its council demand to see Daenerys’s dragons or they will not let her in. Daenerys threatens to take vengeance on them, until one of the council swears a blood oath to allow them to enter the city as his guests.

Daenerys’s counseler Ser Jorah Mormont, played by Iain Glen, is warned by a masked woman named Quaithe, played by Laura Pradelska, that she needs protection from people who desire her dragons. Xaro Xhoan Daxos, the nobleman hosting Daenerys and her party, says he will fund her invasion of Westeros if she agrees to marry him. Ser Jorah warns her against accepting aid and says she can conquer Westeros with a single ship.

Daenerys orders Ser Jorah to find her missing dragons, and Ser Jorah questions the masked woman Qauithe, Laura Pradelska, who says Daenerys is already with the person who has taken them. Xaro Xhoan Daxos and Pyat Pree betray and murder the councilmembers of Qarth and proclaim Xaro king of the city. Pyat Pree tells Daenerys to find her dragons in his stronghold, the Tower of the Undying.

Ser Jorah accompanies Daenerys to the Tower of the Undying where the warlock Pyat Pree, played by Ian Hanmore, is holding her dragons. She is magically separated from Ser Jorah and sees visions of the Iron Throne of Westeros and Khal Droho and their stillborn son, brought to life by magic. Imprisoned by Pyat Pree who hopes to force her into an alliance, she finally manages to defeat him and escape with her dragons.
