Banksy sets up a stall in Central Park, but does not tell anyone the paintings are originals. No paintings are sold until after 3pm, and the days total takings are $420. One of the customers is a man from Chicago, who is decorating his new house:
I just need something for the walls.
Sony ‘Outstanding Contribution to Photography’ award
The World Photography Organisation announces Erwitt will receive the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards Outstanding Contribution to Photography. As part of the award, an exhibition of his most famous imagery, alongside his lesser known works and spanning his 60 year career, is presented at Somerset House, London. WPO spokesperson:
Elliott is entirely unique and independent in every way. Photography is part of his very fabric, but he also clearly separates what he calls his ‘hobby’, from his client work. To most, there will be no noticeable difference between the two. That is what makes him a master.
7 Women, 7 Sins
Sulkowicz participates in 7 Women, 7 Sins, a group art show at Brooklyn’s Kunstraum LLC, where Sulkowicz’s work represents “wrath”. Her work consists of New York Times pages overlaid with drawings that question the content. A self-portrait in which her face is covered by her hands, covers a Times story about her, with text that reads, “you can take my story, but my body won’t be overwritten.” In another piece a drawing of a man holding his erect penis obscures an ad for Tiffany’s diamonds featuring a couple ice skating in Central Park. Sulkowicz’s text reads: “Fuck her. Believe this.” Curator Marcin:
Emma’s contributions confront us with a clear message: ‘You lost humans. Don’t judge. Listen to your inner self. Stop walking like a blind bird towards the cat. Now, consumption is at its highest peak; we are submissive. Emma makes her ‘rape’ purposely consumable and, therefore, attacks consumption at its most evil vein—the formation of inhumanity and our ill, irresponsible participation. She ‘rapes’ us and our judgment with a healthy dose of consciousness.
Dismaland opens
Dismaland, a theme park styled by Banksy, opens in Weston-super-Mare’s Tropicana, a derelict seafront lido. The site houses various sculptures and installations by Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer and Jimmy Cauty. Banksy describes the show as a “family theme park unsuitable for children”.
I loved the Tropicana as a kid, so getting to throw these doors open again is a real honor…I guess you’d say it’s a theme park whose big theme is ‘theme parks should have bigger themes’
PDNB Gallery exhibition
PDNB Gallery, Dallas, opens an exhibition of Erwitt’s work, featuring a selection of photographs showing dogs, one of Erwitt’s favorites topics. Erwitt, including the one taken in New York City in 1974, which is one of the most popular of his dog images.
I can talk to them, and they talk back to me […] If a dog doesn’t answer me, it’s because he’s hard of hearing.

Sulkowicz will hold her first solo show, from Feb 27, titled Emma Sulkowicz: Self-Portrait, at Los Angeles’s Coagula Curatorial art gallery. The exhibition will include two new pieces. Sulkowicz will also make a return to durational performance art with Self-Portrait (Performance with Object), in which she will spend the first three weeks of the show’s run sitting in the gallery, answering visitors’ questions. Questions Sulkowicz is not willing to respond to will be answered by the Emmatron, a life-sized, ultra-realistic statue of the artist that has been programmed to answer set questions. Both Sulkowicz and her robotic double will sit on top of a sculptural platform, and visitors will interact with the Emmatron through an app. The performance will be accompanied by In-Action Figure, a 3-D printed statue of Sulkowicz produced in an edition of 20, which:
reflects the widespread commodification and flattening of her image in the news and on the internet.
The BakeKing makes McGregor cake
The BakeKing (Ben Cullen) shares a video of himself making a large-scale McGregor cake.
Conor McGregor is obviously an inspiration to lot of people. I love this guy, I think he’s hilarious [so] I’m gonna make Conor McGregor…as a cake. The plan was always to take over the UFC and look what he’s doing, he’s smashing it…MMA and cake making i s basically the same thing. Cake making’s probably a bit more tough.
Artist creates 25ft mural
Belfast artist Oliver McParland, 59, creates a 25ft mural of McGregor. McParland was commissioned to do the piece before Christmas.
I worked on it over the Christmas and new year period, and finished it on January 2 – it’s the largest portrait I’ve done. It’s probably the largest Conor McGregor mural in Ireland I would say. I’m delighted with the McGregor mural and am campaigning to bring him to Ballycastle to sign or autograph it!

Sulkowicz is interviewed about her performance art piece, The Healing Touch Integral Wellness Center, where she will take on the role of a doctor, seeing ‘patients’ for 30-minute appointments from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for two weeks at the Philadelphia Contemporary gallery.
If the thesis of this project is that art heals in ways that medicine can’t, I’m trying to figure out what that means. I want this to be a space where people can safely explore their emotions—that’s what I think a ‘safe space’ is—and figure out what they need from art, not just as an intellectual journey but to really feel why art is important to them…It sounds corny, but if my goal with art is to actually change the world for the better, I think performance art is going to be the most effective tool for that.

Yes [I resent him], because people accused me of launching a bullying campaign against him. But no one knew his name until he put it out there…I’m doing other things now, but he still has a pending lawsuit. What’s he doing with his life? It’s crazy to me.
On whether she wishes she could escape the notoriety of her mattress performance:
Absolutely. It’s really depressing to not be anonymous. It’s an ongoing conflict because on the one hand, I’m happy that the movement needed someone to step up and be the face of it and humbled to have been chosen, but the sacrifices I’ve had to make for that have been really stressful. I’ve lost friends. It was a very tumultuous year and I was very depressed.
McGregor and Mayweather face off in wood

Sad Kanye inflatable renamed after criticism from mental health advocates
In response to criticism from mental health groups, Australia’s Splendour in the Grass festival renames a 30-foot-high inflatable sculpture called ‘Sad Kanye’ as ‘Happy Kanye’. The sculpture was created by Barcelona-based art group Hungry Castle (who were responsible for the previous year’s giant pink turd). In the initial press release Splendour said:
Why the sad face Kanye?. Why you got that resting bitch face, dog? Sometimes you crazy but you’re a dope ass producer and writer.
After criticism from fans who noted that West has suffered from depression, Splendour releases a follow-up statement:
Dear Kanye, This is not a diss track. Yesterday we announced plans to build a tribute sculpture of you. It’s based on an internet meme titled Sad Kanye and as artists, we believed it would be an interesting platform to spread a message of positivity and good vibes. The concept is simple, we plan to invite the entire world to climb inside your mind and make you happy. Our work is based on the internet, celebrity figures and meme cultures. It was never our intention to start a dialogue about mental health issues. But as you know more than anybody, great art can often be divisive and is ultimately open to the interpretation of the public. We want to thank the internet for opening our eyes to this viewpoint and we now see how this project could be viewed as insensitive. We believe mental health is a serious issue and if our art is bringing awareness to this (even if accidentally) than perhaps just perhaps that’s a good thing. We’re fans of your rich body of work and we’re incredibly excited to share this playful installation with Splendour in the Grass and Bestival this year. Which is why we’ve decided to retitle the work HAPPY KANYE, which is what this is really all about. Good vibes

Two Irishmen make Conor McGregor mosaic from 12,000 Lego pieces
Two Irishmen unveil a 4ft square portrait of McGregor, made from over 12,000 pieces of Lego. The pair, who are part of adult LEGO group Brick.ie, say the project took them two months to complete.
We’re fans of McGregor and big fans of LEGO so we thought we would combine the two together and make this. We had to design it on the computer so between that and actually making it it took us between two and two and a half months. The computer design took about a week and then the LEGO part there is about 300 hours in it, myself and Jay had to make time with work and everything. He lives in Meath and I live in Dublin so I had to travel down every day to do it, but it was worth it in the end.

Crypto company builds 30ft ‘Musk goat rocket’
A cryptocurrency company creates a 30-foot long monument to Musk, showing him as a goat riding on a rocket. The art took 700 hours to build and is worth an estimated $600k. The 5’9″ tall aluminium head of the statue was built by Canadian metal sculptors Kevin and Michelle Stone. The cryptocurrency firm Elon GOAT Token ($EGT) plan to present the monument to Musk in Austin, TX, on Nov 26. Company spokesperson:
We built Elon Musk a $600,000 monument on the back of a semi trailer in honour of his many accomplishments and commitment to Cryptocurrency. Most people thought we would never do it, but after one year of building the time has come to bring it home to Elon. Really we just want to meet the guy and give it to him. After all, he is the most innovative human alive, hence the GOAT – Greatest Of All Time.
