I began this year with open hands and an open heart, telling the Lord I would walk wherever He would lead. I could have never imagined where the journey would take me: becoming a part of the Gotee family, working with Toby, developing friendships with Christian radio folks across the country, opening for Audio Adrenaline, and most of all, seeing how God can use my songs and story to encourage others in the midst of what they are dealing with in their own lives. I’m so excited and honored to be nominated for a GRAMMY. I was on my tour bus when I got the call from my manager, Mitchell Solarek, who was screaming! He has been with me from the beginning of my career, and has wanted to deliver that news to me for the past 12 years. He finally got to make that call. I had been nominated for a GRAMMY!

Well you know it’s been good because up until everything I’ve been a part of has been really magic and small and completely unknown neighbourhood and family and place. My mom is Buvi; it’s a little, little, little tiny tribe. And my family was one of the most successful of the town village. And you know I feel all this had been a trick. I must have been in the middle of playing a loud trombone solo at a Saturday night gig when the text came into my phone saying “GRAMMY-nominated!!!” from my pianist friend, Dave Cook. I saw the message on the ensuing set break and wrote back, “WTF?! … That’s unexpected!” I had to go to GRAMMY.com to check it out myself. I think I refreshed the page three times until I started believing I was actually nominated.

Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society are Grammy nominees for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album for Brooklyn Babylon.

Our biggest priority was the tight integration of music with the animation and live painting, so that all three elements would work together to tell the story in the best possible way. Danijel sent me a series of still images from the paintings that would be the basis of his animation. I wrote the music with those images very much in mind.
