Bryant becomes the youngest player to score 20,000 career points in NBA history as he scores 39 points in a victory against the Knicks. Bryant is 29 years and 122 days old, whereas the previous record holder Chamberlain reached the milestone at 29 years and 134 days old.

Bryant wins the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award. Bryant averaged 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.84 steals for the season while playing all 82 games despite tearing a ligament in his right pinkie in February. Bryant:

Living Legend award

The Library of Congress honors Bond as a Living Legend, an award that honors artists, writers, activists, filmmakers, physicians, entertainers, sports figures and public servants who have made significant contributions to America’s cultural, scientific and social heritage.

I felt flattered and honored and especially pleased to be in the company of the other awardees. By lucky coincidence, I was able to lead a chorus of Happy Birthday to fellow honoree Herbie Hancock.

Receives Iran award

During his official state visit to Tehran, Assad receives Iran’s highest national award in recognition of his support for the Palestinians, Lebanon, and his “rejection of global arrogance”. In a ceremony broadcast on Iranian state-run television, Ahmadinejad presents Assad with the Islamic Republic’s Medal of Honor. Ahmadinejad:

We are two governments and nations that are brothers. If it were not for Syria’s resistance against the Zionist regime [Israel] and its supporters, no country in our region would have remained safe from the Zionists’ aggression and there would be no sign of Palestinian resistance…Re-invigorating the front of resistance will not only persuade other countries and nations to join the front, but also pave the ground for the consolidation and stabilization of peace in the region…Syria is a benefactor to Muslims, Arabs and even to humanity.

The Henry Crown Fellowship is designed to “engage the next generation of leaders in the challenge of community-spirited leadership”.  The two-year program is for entrepreneurs under 45 who have already achieved conspicuous success in their chosen fields and are at a point of inflection in their lives and careers. The country duo wins two awards at the 47th annual Country Music Association Awards. Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard accept the awards for Best Vocal Duo of the Year as well as Single of the Year for their song Cruise. In his acceptance speech for Single of the Year, Hubbard states:
