Albert Nobbs

Close plays Albert Nobbs, a hotel waiter, in this drama directed by Rodrigo Garcia. Nobbs is a woman who has been living as a man for 30 years in order to make a living for herself in 19th century Ireland. She meets Hubert Page, a painter hired to work on the hotel property where Nobbs lives and works, and is inspired to dream of a different life. Co-starring Janet McTeer and Mia Wasikowska.

People think it’s all about gender but I don’t think it is; it’s about how people survive and about how human beings need to feel safe. I think Albert is truly one of the great characters and the story, for all its basic simplicity, has a strange emotional power.

Produces Tennis album

Carney produces the sophomore album of pop group Tennis. The album is titled Young & Old and is recorded in Nashville.

They basically just e-mailed and asked me if I was interested in helping them make an album, and I was. I like working with bands that have that kind of pop aesthetic but are still coming from a different direction. I try not to do that much production work. But for them, it kind of worked out perfectly because they came to Nashville, and we made the album in, like, 10 days in my garage.

A lot of making rock’n’roll is about cutting the fat and being a good filter. In the studio, he helped us refine the songs and found the best representation of each one possible. Plus, we wanted to be able to incorporate all different styles and I think our album runs the gamut.

Electric City

Hanks produces this futuristic, dystopian, animated series for Yahoo! and provides the voice for Cameron Carr, the lead character, who is in charge of policing the underground. Besides wanting to create Internet content that wasn’t comedic, Hanks takes the opportunity to play a character unlike himself.

I’m handcuffed by the way I look and the way I sound, and by the body of work I’ve done before.

Produces Lana Del Rey album

Auerbach produces Del Rey’s major label debut, Ultraviolence, at his Nashville studio. His influence is felt through blues and psychedelic guitar touches. The collaboration begins when the two meet at a New York strip club, with both artists interested in recreating a 1970s sound.

The thing about Dan is that he comes from that DIY place and actually so do I, in a way. So there was a sense of freedom from working with him. He loved that everyone kept saying, ‘Dan, are you going to make it bigger?’ and he was like, ‘No, Lana is just going to make it more personal’.

The recording for album track Brooklyn Baby is originally scheduled to be a duet with Lou Reed, bu Reed dies on the day they were supposed to record.
