Affleck: McGregor fighting style is seeping into movies

While promoting his latest film, Live By Night, Affleck says McGregor’s impact on the world of mixed martial arts over the course of the last few years is also being felt in Hollywood. Previously, Affleck has said that his fighting in Batman vs Superman was influenced by McGregor.

MMA is taking over in terms of the style that people use stunt-wise for fighting. People now recognise that as the most pure form of combat and it’s now seeping into movies. It can be seen in all kinds of movies. I’m a big Conor McGregor fan. I think he’s very impressive. I’d love to see… someone was saying he was going to fight Mayweather. It think that would be an amazing fight. I guess they would have to work a deal out or whatever, but that would be cool.

Helwani: Mayweather-McGregor ‘not just a PR stunt any more’

Helwani says that Mayweather-McGregor is moving into an “exploratory phase”.

Silva: McGregor’s ‘flaws are clear’

Silva says that McGregor should try to fight Mayweather despite his flaws.

He has flaws. We all have flaws. And his flaws are clear. He defends well, but he doesn’t have jiu-jitsu. The main thing is that he uses his movement and his opponent’s movement in his advantage. He never puts himself in uncomfortable positions. Everyone who fought him put themselves in uncomfortable positions and weren’t able to get back to comfortable positions again. I think everybody has a chance. When you step inside (the ring) to fight, you have a chance. Of course that if you’re fighting Mayweather, people would say ‘oh, McGregor won’t last a round,’ but we never know. The movement is different, how you have your feet on the ground is different, the timing is different boxing. The only way to see is putting them to fight. He would have to stop at least a year to be able to do a close fight, and I believe he should do it.

Bayless: Mayweather is afraid of McGregor

Bayless says Mayweather’s offer of $15 million shows that he is not interested in fighting McGregor.

What a bunch of delusional bluster from Floyd May-or-may-not-Weather Jr. He can sell this bologna to the people he pays to say yes to him, who surround him and hang around him all day long but I am not going to buy it because it’s obviously what Floyd May-or-may-not-Weather is doing. He’s making an insultingly low offer to Conor McGregor because there is no way he wants any part — even boxing under boxing rules — of Conor McGregor, who is now the baddest man on this planet. He is afraid of Conor McGregor. Conor McGregor is 28 years of age, Floyd is almost 40 years of age and he’s heading towards washed up. Because he has not fought anybody for a long, long time. He is afraid of what Conor McGregor, even under strictly boxing rules would do to Floyd’s 49-0 legacy, which is tainted forever. Some MMA fighter, what if he lost to an MMA fighter? Which he would. What he’s going to do, this is classic Floyd — he’s going to jab and he’s going to run and he’s going to jab and he’s going to run. Then he’s going to jab and then he’s going to run, run, run some more because he’s going to run and hide from Conor McGregor. Globally, Conor McGregor is much bigger than Floyd Mayweather. I’m sorry, he’s the draw in UFC and so he’s the global draw right now.

Danis: McGregor will ‘pick Nurmagomedov apart’

Danis comments on a potential fight between Nurmagomedov and McGregor, in the event that Nurmagomedov beats Tony Ferguson at UFC 209 in March.

[Khabib’s] too easily hit. If you saw in the Michael Johnson fight, he was getting like wobbled and rocked every time they were on the feet. So Conor is going to pick him apart like he does all the wrestlers. He hits you from everywhere and he kicks you in the stomach. And people don’t see those shots on TV, like some of those deep kicks and some of the kicks to the stomach, but those take the wind out of you. And when you basically have to take someone down, it puts a different kind of feeling in your stomach ad in your gut when you have to take the guy down. The guy’s beating you up on the feet, and when you go to the ground he’s elbowing you. So I think Conor puts him away in probably one or two rounds with strikes.

Garbrand: McGregor was right about ‘snake’ TJ Dillashaw

Despite previously almost getting into a fight apparently defending Dillashaw against McGregor’s claims that he was a “little weasel” who was taking advantage of Urijah Faber, Garbrandt now says that McGregor was right in calling Dillashaw out.

Rutten: McGregor stance weak on left side

Rutten says that McGregor has great hands, but his stance is a weak point.

I’m in love with his hands. He is the guy, one of my favourites to watch. Also, outside of fighting the way he talks. Like with me in interviews, it’s the same story over and over again. But he can make it different every time. He’s one of those guys who constantly changes…You know his stance, because he’s a southpaw. What I thought with Aldo was, if I was Aldo’s coach a year ago, I would have said ‘we’re going to train southpaw’ because there is no way that he can block those low-kicks. If left low-kicks come he can’t block ’em. His stance is too wide and his knees are pointing inside, he can’t block them. It changes the whole game.

Rogan: McGregor ‘best shit-talker in history of combat sports’

Rogan says McGregor is the best trash-talker in combat sports.

He’s the best shit-talker in the history of combat sports. Before him it was Chael Sonnen and Muhammad Ali and now it’s Conor McGregor. He just knows how to say it. When Jeremy Stephens started talking [at the UFC 205 press conference] and Conor just destroyed him with one sentence. I mean, he finds the perfect shit to say.

Khan: Mayweather will fight McGregor and win

Khan says that he believes that Mayweather will come back to fight McGregor, and that Mayweather will win the fight.

If [Mayweather] is coming back, he wants a huge, huge fight, a mega fight, and I think a mega fight would be against someone like McGregor. But with McGregor, he’s not going to be as good in boxing as he is in MMA. It will be a one-sided fight if Mayweather fights him…I met Mayweather and he came over to me and said ‘you’re a great champion, look the fight between me and you didn’t happen. He was very very respectful and said he’s love to work with me in the future, but I just don’t see him coming back.

McGregor trolls Mayweather with ‘Call me CJ Watson!’ taunt

McGregor posts an image to Twitter, showing him holding up an MMA and a boxing belt after defeating a Mayweather. The caption is a reference to Mayweather’s feud with NBA star C.J. Watson, who the boxer believed was sleeping with the mother of his three children – Jose Harris. Mayweather was convicted of domestic abuse towards Harris in 2015 and sentenced to two months in prison.

Mayweather claims he offered McGregor £12m to fight

Mayweather says that he offered McGregor £12m to fight.

We tried to make the Conor McGregor fight…My number was a guaranteed $100million (£83m). We’re the A-side and I don’t know how much he has made before but I’m pretty sure he hasn’t made $10m in an MMA bout. But we are willing to give him $15m (£12m), and we can talk about splitting the back-end percentage on PPV. But we’re the A-side. How can a guy talk about $20m or $30m if he’s never made eight or nine million?…Conor McGregor keeps telling everybody he wants the fight. Let’s make it happen…I’m probably interested in [coming out of retirement for] the Conor McGregor fight. I’m a businessman and it makes more business sense.

Responds to Streep comments

Kavanagh responds to Streep’s comments that MMA is “not an art”:

A lot has been made of Meryl Streep’s ‘calling out’ of Mixed Martial Arts as not being ‘the arts’. She’s 100% right, it’s sport. I was just impressed she said mixed martial arts and not ‘cage fighting’. People probably got a little defensive with the way she was clearly saying ‘the arts’ were so much superior to ‘sport’. What would we ever do without Hollywood!!? The great american writer Joseph Campbell said the closest he ever came to a truly spiritual experience was through athletics. I wouldn’t like to think of one activity better than the other – sport or art. Just do whatever you enjoy.  I think people’s main issue with her teary well acted speech was that she tried to pass herself, and the rest of her ultra rich and ultra entitled liberal friends, off as ‘an outsider’. Yes Meryl, you’re just like an illegal immigrant or starving refugee. Fuck off. Just carry on adding to your 100s of millions you’ve earned from playing pretend. You’ve known nothing but extreme wealth and privilege your whole life, so don’t look down your nose at sport which has probably helped a lot more people than the expensive drama schools you attended.  Happy Tuesday haha!

Breaks silence, posts about hitting ‘rock bottom’

Rousey posts a quote from JK Rowling’s 2008 Harvard commencement address. In that speech, Rowling said that, seven years after leaving college, she had:

Failed on an epic scale. An exceptionally short-lived marriage had imploded, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless.

It was only from then she was able to start working on Harry Potter.

Frampton ‘knocking out sparring partners’

Frampton says he is looking forward to the Santa Cruz fight.

I am confident I will knock this guy out on January 28th. The signs are good in training and I just can’t wait to get out there. I feel good, young and fresh and Santa Cruz will discover just how good I am. I have felt great in training. I know a lot of boxers say they have had an ‘amazing camp’ and they feel ‘in the best shape ever.’ but I really do feel that way. I am knocking my sparring partners out, and I am better than ever. I am looking forward to this fight and I am bringing the belt back with me to Belfast.

Coker to Streep: ‘MMA is an art’

In response to Streep’s Golden Globe’s speech where she said that MMA was not an art, Bellator MMA President Coker tweets a rebuttal and an invitation to the actress to watch a fight with him in LA.

White: Streep an ‘uppity, 80-year-old-lady’

In response to Streep’s comments during her Golden Globes acceptance speech:

If all these outsiders and foreigners were kicked out of Hollywood, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.

White:

The last thing in the world I expect is an uppity, 80-year-old lady to be in our demographic and love mixed martial arts…I’m not a big fan of golf, doesn’t mean people should stop watching it. If you don’t like it change the channel…Of course it’s an art. These men and women are so talented. They train their whole lives to become the best in the world, and the people who get into the UFC are the elite of the elite. Saying something stupid like that is like saying she’s not a talented actress…We have champions from all over the world, men and women. It was a completely uneducated comment.
