Tried to board flight as James T. Kirk

Salmond says that British Airways refused to let him on the plane at Heathrow because the name on his ticket, James T. Kirk (the name of the StarShip Enterprise’s commander, played by William Shatner in Star Trek) – didn’t match that in his passport. Salmond said, as a fan of the show, he had been using the name to travel incognito for years. But since resigning as First Minister he no longer travelled with protection officers who could explain the ruse. After some emails and calls to his staff, Salmond was allowed on the flight.

It was all sorted out. I just wanted BA to ‘Beam me up, Scotty’.

Says armed teachers would have stopped killings

At a campaign event in Franklin, Tennessee, Trump tells the audience he supports the Second Amendment.

By the way, it was a gun-free zone. Let me tell you, if you had a couple teachers with guns in that room, you would have been a hell of a lot better off…The Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental right that belongs to all law-abiding Americans. The Constitution doesn’t create that right — it ensures that the government can’t take it away…Our Founding Fathers knew and our Supreme Court has upheld that the the Second Amendment purpose is to guarantee our right to defend ourselves and our families. In fact, I have a license to carry in New York, can you believe that? Nobody knows that. Can you imagine? Somebody says, ‘There’s Trump, he’s easy pickings.’ What’d you’d say?”

Trump then mimics holding a gun with his hand.

Father blames access to guns

Mercer’s father, Ian Mercer, says he doesn’t know where his son got his weapons.

How on earth could he compile 13 guns? How could that happen? We talk about gun laws. We talk about gun control. Every time something like this happens, they talk about it and nothing gets done. I’m not trying to say that that’s to blame for what happened, but if Chris had not been able to get hold of 13 guns, this wouldn’t have happened…It has to change. How can it not? Even people that believe in the right to bear arms, what right do you have to take people’s lives? That’s what guns are, the killers. Simple as that. Simple as that. It’s black and white. What do you want a gun for?

On his son’s mental state:

Obviously, somebody who goes and kills nine people has to have some kind of issue. Whatever it is, let the police determine what they find.

Claim: Most transparent person in US history

At a town hall in Iowa, Clinton claims she is the most transparent person in U.S. history.

I have gone further than anybody that I’m aware of in American history. Now it’s not a long history since we haven’t had emails that long–as long as we’ve had them, I’ve gone longer and farther to be as transparent as possible. Nobody else has done that. [I’m] a little embarrassed that the emails are so boring.

Would go to prison to return to US

In an interview with BBC’s Panorama Snowden says he has offered to return to the United States and go to jail for leaking details of NSA programs, but had not received a formal plea-deal offer.

[I’ve] volunteered to go to prison with the government many times… So far they’ve said they won’t torture me, which is a start, I think. But we haven’t gotten much further than that…The question is, if I was a traitor, who did I betray? I gave all of my information to American journalists and free society generally. I have paid a price but I feel comfortable with the decisions I’ve made. If I’m gone tomorrow, I’m happy with what I had. I feel blessed.

Opposes TTP

In an interview with Woodruff on PBS NewsHour, Clinton says she opposes the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal, a deal she backed while she was Secretary of State. She says it fails to create good jobs, raise wages and advance national security.

What I know about it, as of today I’m not in favor of what I’ve learned about it…I still believe in the goal of a strong and fair trade agreement in the Pacific as part of a broader strategy both at home and abroad, just as I did when I was Secretary of State. I appreciate the hard work that President Obama and his team put into this process and recognize the strides they made. But the bar here is very high and, based on what I have seen, I don’t believe this agreement has met it.

Water and ice found

Pluto haloNASA says that Pluto has traces of water and ice on its surface. Red-colored frozen surface water is confirmed by combining spectral infrared and visible light data taken by two of New Horizons’ image sensors. The agency also releases a picture of Pluto’s blue sky, which is caused by tiny, sunlight-scattering particles in the atmosphere. Those particles probably begin as molecular nitrogen (which Pluto is constantly emitting) and other trace gases.

Takes credit for McCarthy drop

At a campaign event in Las Vegas, Trump says he is partly responsible for McCarthy’s decision to drop his bid to become speaker.

They’re giving me a lot of credit for that because I said you really need someone very, very, tough and very smart. You know, smart goes with tough. I know tough people that aren’t smart. That’s the worst. We need smart, we need tough, we need the whole package.

Bergdahl ‘should have been executed’

In a rally in Las Vegas’s Treasure Island hotel, Trump says Bergdahl should have been executed.

We’re tired of Sgt. Bergdahl, who’s a traitor, a no-good traitor, who should have been executed. Thirty years ago he would have been shot.

Bergdahl’s lawyer:

[Trump] has become a broken record on this subject…If he took the time to study what actually emerged at the preliminary hearing he would be singing a different tune.

Latino supporter praises

In a rally in Las Vegas’s Treasure Island hotel, Trump asks Colombian immigrant and Las Vegas resident Myriam Witcher up onto the stage, who had with her a copy of People magazine featuring Trump on the cover. Witcher:

I love Mr. Trump! I am Hispanic, and I vote for Mr. Trump!”

Trump, who says he had never met her before, tells her “you are beautiful,” autographs the magazine and gives her a hug and a kiss.

That’s my relationship with Hispanics.

In an interview before the rally, Witcher says she supports Trump’s plan to deport all immigrants here without legal status. She says she had to wait five years for a visa and that she and her family have “respect for the Constitution and rules.”

I’m Hispanic, Latina, and I love me some Trump. He’s the perfect man, a businessman.

Police removed from Ecuadorian embassy

After 40 months, UK police call off their 24-hour surveillance of the Ecuadorian embassy. The cost of the operation is over $17 million. Police:

[It is] no longer proportionate to commit officers to a permanent presence…The MPS will not discuss what form its continuing operation will take or the resourcing implications surrounding it. Whilst no tactics guarantee success in the event of Julian Assange leaving the embassy, the MPS will deploy a number of overt and covert tactics to arrest him.

WikiLeaks spokesperson:

My interpretation is that it has not been lifted. They are calling off the uniformed presence but escalating the covert operation and will arrest him if he steps out off the embassy.

Drops nudes

As part of a redesign that will be unveiled in March 2016 , the print edition of Playboy drops images of nude women, although it will still feature women in provocative poses.

CEO Flanders:

You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it’s just passé at this juncture.

As a result of dropping nudity from its website in 2014, executives say the average age of its reader dropped from 47 to just over 30, and its web traffic jumped to about 16 million from about four million unique users per month. The magazine continues to make a loss of $3 million/year, but is seen as a storefront for the brand.

Officers appear in court

All, six officers appear in court in Baltimore in front of Judge Williams, who will determine whether their still undisclosed statements will be allowed at trial. The officers who gave interviews want the statements thrown out, claiming were not read their rights. They say they feared they’d lose their jobs if they refused to talk to internal police investigators. They also saying the statements violate Maryland’s law enforcement officers’ bill of rights, which says police cannot be prosecuted for statements they were forced to give on the job. All officers except Goodson speak at length about the ride.
