Zimbabwe elects Mugabe as the first black prime minister in a landslide victory. Mugabe:
If yesterday I fought you as an enemy, today you have become a friend and ally with the same national interest, loyalty, rights and duties as myself. If yesterday you hated me, today you cannot avoid the love that binds you to me and me to you…Is it not folly, therefore, that in these circumstances anybody should seek to revive the wounds and grievances of the past? The wrongs of the past must now stand forgiven and forgotten. If ever we look to the past, let us do so for the lesson the past has taught us, namely that oppression and racism are inequities that must never again find scope in our political and social system. It could never be a correct justification that, because whites oppressed us yesterday when they had power, the blacks must oppress them today because they have power.
Wins primary
Walker wins the Republican primary in a five-way race for the 14th District Assembly seat in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Mary Jo Paque, who comes in fourth, credits his endorsement by the Wisconsin Right To Life to his victory:
I still think the majority of people in Wauwatosa are pro-choice, but the machine behind pro-life, they got their people to the polls. It’s not the Right-To-Life issue — it’s the Right-To-Life machine getting people to the polls.
Wins 14th District Assembly seat
Walker wins a special election over Christopher Ament for the 14th District Assembly seat in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He campaigns against crime and abortion, reducing taxes, and reforming welfare. He calls for a cap on State spending tied to the rate of inflation and an increase in prison beds. He attributes his win to:
hard work more than anything, more than any specific issue. I wore out two pairs of shoes hitting just under 10,000 homes in 2-1/2 months.
Elected national chairperson
Zuma is elected National Chairperson of the ANC and Chairperson of the ANC in Natal. An exception is made in the ANC constitution to allow him to hold both positions. A move that is called The Zuma Clause.
Sworn in
Pataki is sworn in as Governor of New York:

Wins election
Elections are held for a president and a new National Assembly from March 2-28, the first since the coup. 125 members of the 400-seat National Assembly are nominated before the election, leaving 275 seats to be elected (of which 51 were ultimately uncontested). There are no political parties — all candidates ran as independents. Leaders of the Sudan’s main opposition parties, disbanded when Bashir took power, boycott elections. Ousted Prime Minister Mahdi, calls the elections a cheap attempt by the Government to buy legitimacy.
Bashir is elected president with 75.7% of votes. He will serve a five-year term, after which he will be allowed to run once more. He tells the crowd:
We have fully returned power in full to the people.
The New York Times reports the power behind Bashir’s government is widely believed to be the militant Muslim cleric Turabi, who is elected to a seat in Parliament in Khartoum.
Sworn in for second term
Pataki is sworn in for a second term as the Governor of New York.

Re-elected
The Zimbabwe registrar-general declares that Mugabe wins a fifth term in office after the results from all 120 constituencies are returned. Mugabe wins 1,685,212 votes against 1,258,401 for challenger Tsvangirai. Mugabe makes a net gain of votes compared with the 2000 parliamentary election in every province in the country. While there is evidence of vote tampering in some areas, most of the ballots dropped into the box with a cross by Mugabe’s name are not fraudulent. There is no criticism of the count, and election observers from South Africa, Nigeria and Namibia effectively endorsed the election. Namibian observer:
It is our considered view that the election was free and fair and reflects the wishes of the people of Zimbabwe. [The poll] was watertight, without room for rigging”.
Justice Minister Chinamasa:
This is a runaway victory. It was won on the issue of the land.
Tsavrangai:
We foresaw electoral fraud but not daylight robbery. We find ourselves unable to endorse the purported election of President Robert Mugabe as Zimbabwe’s president in this election. It’s the biggest election fraud I’ve witnessed in my life.
Wins primary
Walker wins in the primary election for Milwaukee County Executive receiving 37% of the votes against five other challengers. He says that he is serious about reform, promising to cut the executive salary from $128,820 to $60,000 and holding a referendum on whether the job should remain.
I am not afraid to act immediately to take on those who would defend the abuse and the waste in county government.
Wins election
Walker wins the election for Milwaukee County Executive. He pledges not to increase taxes even though the county is running a $3.5 million deficit. He is going to lobby against cuts in state-shared revenue to localities and for greater state funding for the county-run court system. He wants to cut the size of the 25-member county board and turn it into a policy-making body of part-time supervisors.
I believe the campaign starts tomorrow. It is the campaign to get things done.
Re-elected as Florida Governor
Bush wins second term as Florida governor by defeating McBride in 2002 Florida gubernatorial election. Bush receives 2,783,346 votes, or 56 percent, while McBride has 2,132,185 votes, or 43 percent.

Re-elected
Assad overwhelmingly wins another seven-year term of office, in a ballot in which he is the only candidate. Political opposition groups are banned unless they are attached the Baath Party. The interior ministry says he wins the backing of more than 97% of Syria’s 12 million voters. The ministry says the turnout is enormous, but gives no figures. Minister:
This great consensus shows the political maturity of Syria and the brilliance of our democracy.
Elected ANC president
Zuma is elected president of the African National Congress at the party’s conference in Polokwane. Mbeki receives 1,505 votes to Zuma’s 2,329. As the announcement of each position is announced, thousands of delegates blow whistles, dance on tables and chairs, and sing and cheer—despite being asked to wait until after the announcement before applauding. Later the celebrations continue with fireworks.
Elected president
South Africa’s ruling African National Congress wins the country’s election. The ANC receives 65.9% of the vote, the Democratic Alliance 16.66% and the Congress of the People (COPE) – formed by ANC dissidents – 7.42%. The turnout is 77.30%. but the result falls just short of the two-thirds majority needed to make unchallenged changes to the constitution. Zuma claims victory and the outcome is welcomed by ministers in neighboring Zimbabwe as intensifying pressure on President Robert Mugabe.

In the first elections — for president, parliament and other local positions — in 24 years, Bashir wins with 68.24 percent of the vote, just under seven million votes. The voting is scrutinized by about 750 international and 18,000 domestic observers.

Walker becomes Wisconsin’s 45th governor on promises to bring jobs to the state, cut spending, lower taxes, and stop a federally funded passenger train from Madison to Milwaukee. With Republicans taking over both houses of the State legislature, it should be easy for him to pass his agenda.

Elected as Kentucky senator
Paul defeats Conway to be elected as United State senator from Kentucky. He received 55.7 % of the total votes polled.
I have a message from the people of Kentucky, a message that is loud and clear and does not mince words: We’ve come to take our government back.
Wins recall election
Walker wins the recall election against Tom Barrett by about 7%.
