Roddy ready to prep McGregor for Mayweather fight
McGregor’s striking coach, Roddy, says that after the Artem Lobov fight he will start helping McGregor prepare for Mayweather.
Training now officially starts hard when I get back on Tuesday. I was talking to Conor over the weekend and we’re getting going. I don’t think it’s officially signed yet but it will be soon enough. That’s going to be an exciting one…Conor comes with a different type of style. Obviously, it’s Floyd Mayweather and that’s going to be the challenge but at the end of the day Conor only needs to land once. I’ve said this in every interview. He only needs to land once and you can’t go against those odds…You watch him spar and a new person will come in and within one or two exchanges, Conor can read the guy and he can tell what shots are coming. I think that is going to be the same scenario when it comes to Mayweather.

White: McGregor ‘will hit’ Mayweather
Appearing with Snoop Dogg, White says McGregor can beat Mayweather.
At the end of the day it’s a fight. Floyd Mayweather is 40 years old; Conor McGregor is 27. Conor’s a big dude. Floyd has trouble with southpaws; Conor McGregor is a southpaw. And Conor McGregor hits like a truck. When he hits you, you know it. So, in no way, shape or form am I saying Conor McGregor wins this fight. I don’t know. But it’s more interesting than people think it is. … I promise you Conor McGregor will hit him. When they fight (Mayweather) will get hit, and it will be interesting to see what happens.
McGregor manager: Mayweather fight moving in the right direction
Attar, McGregor’s manager says there is still a long way to go to a Mayweather fight, but that everything is moving in the right direction.
It’s a work in progress but definitely trending in the right direction. It’s not done. Until the ink drys and beyond that, the fight happens, you don’t know. A lot of Conor’s focus and visions have ended up becoming a reality and I think that’s something that he’s always subscribed to in his career. So it’s all trending in the right direction. [On a scale of one to ten] I could tell you five but I still don’t know it until it happens.
Showtime Exec: Mayweather v. McGregor is ‘at a standstill’
A Showtime executive says there has been little progress on a potential McGregor-Mayweather fight. Showtime has hosted every Mayweather PPV since he signed with them in 2013 and will be the carrier for the super fight if it ends up happening.
The biggest battle in Mayweather-Pacquiao was both guys really thinking that the other wanted to do it. That part has happened [with McGregor and Mayweather], so I think the real question – and it’s sort of a black box right now – is where’s the UFC really, on this? Do they, in fact, want it? Dana – speaking on behalf of, I assume, the UFC – is making noises that he’s more open to it but talk is talk. I haven’t seen a lot of progress either internally in the deal between the two of them or externally, the deal between that side and this side. It’s largely at a standstill. There hasn’t been a ton of progress and I think if they don’t move relatively quickly, people may move on. People may tire of it. But it really is something that needs to happen this year, or it probably won’t happen. Floyd’s on 18 months, two solid years come September since he’s fought. He’s still in great shape, but at a certain point, he’s not gonna do it after a while. I think part of the fear on the UFC’s side is that they’ll never see Conor again. If he makes 50, 60, 70 and then you never see him in the ring, and he retires in Ireland and so much for their megastar.
Mayweather Sr. to McGregor: ‘I’m a 64-year-old man and I’ll beat your ass’
Floyd Mayweather Sr. says that, not only will his son beat McGregor, but that he can beat him in the ring.
He don’t want that fight. Floyd’s gonna turn him upside down. That be like you and Floyd in the ring! [Laughs]. He looks bad in the ring. That’s a done deal right there. They’ve already showed the best that he’s got…He ain’t nothing but talk! I told them people on the TV already, forget about Floyd. Let’s throw Floyd to the side. Here I am, I’m a 64-year-old man and I’ll beat your ass. I’ll beat the shit out of McGregor! Anytime he wants it, let’s go.
Tarver: McGregor has ‘not a chance in hell’ against Mayweather
Tarver, who was a 1996 Olympic boxer, says McGregor cannot compete with Mayweather in boxing.
Not a chance in hell. Because Conor McGregor can’t beat the top-20 in the division, how the f-ck is he going to beat Floyd Mayweather? Not a f-cking chance in hell (of even a puncher’s chance), because he’s not punching with those four-ounce gloves on. He’s punching with 10-ounce gloves on. Big difference. It’s a money fight. I don’t know if it’s a mockery, but it’s a money fight. That’s what it’s all about. Conor McGregor can’t beat Nate Diaz in a boxing match. In a boxing match, [Diaz] will beat his ass, and there’s a whole lot of other fighters out there who will beat his ass in a boxing match.
He also says that Mayweather can knock McGregor out:
I think Floyd can knock him out, because Floyd is a boxer. [McGregor] is not going to know what to do. He hasn’t had the repetitions. He hasn’t had the experiences. He don’t know what it’s going to take. Sh-t, he gets tired in a five-round fight, even though they’re going five rounds and they’re wrestling. What the hell you think is going to happen in round six, seven, if he gets that far? When he’s mentally fatigued and tired? Because I’ve seen him in the Octagon getting mentally fatigued and tired. So he just needs to be taught.
Mayweather: McGregor could beat me
Mayweather says McGregor could beat him.
I’m not gonna sit right here and knock Conor McGregor. He’s gone out there and done what he’s had to do. It’s obvious he’s done something right thus far to get to the point where he’s at. I’ve been off for a couple years and I’m 40 years old now. So, I’m a lot older and he’s still in his 20s and I’m in my 40s now. So that could play a major key, we don’t know. And he’s a heavy hitter. Every time he goes out there and defeats fighters, he’s standing up. He’s in a boxing position and he’s beating fighters. Does he have a good chance of upsetting Floyd Mayweather? I can’t say, but anything can happen in the sport of boxing.
White: I’m ‘trying my hardest’ to get deal with Mayweather
White says he is working on the Mayweather-McGregor fight.
Still working on it. We are not close…To get a deal like this done, this doesn’t happen in a couple months. It’s gonna be a tough deal to get done, if it gets done at all…I guaranteed that I would try my hardest.
White also responds to Mayweather’s comment that McGregor could beat him.
I’ve never heard Floyd talk like that! Anybody knows a fight is a fight. Anything can happen in a fight especially when you have a guy who hits as hard as Conor does, and when you have a guy who is as talented as Floyd.
Mayweather: ‘We are ready to go’

The only thing I do is have patience. No-one thought the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would happen, but I had patience. Do I believe the fight is going to happen. I really don’t know when, as of right now. But me and my side…we are ready to go. They sign on the dotted line, and [we start] at training camp…’Ready to go’ is when they sign…The hold up is that Conor McGregor has a baby that’s due. After the baby is due we can go from there…[Regarding money] you have to work your way to become the A-side. In the UFC, he is the A-side. This is Mayweather Promotions working with the UFC. We are the A-side because of the numbers, because of the PPV numbers. His largest guarantee was only $3 million, no more than $5 million.
White: Mayweather-McGregor negotiations ‘a nightmare’
While making an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, White confirms he had September 16th in mind for McGregor and Mayweather. However, he wasn’t able to get the deal done in time.
The reason they got my date is because I couldn’t get my deal done on time, so they got the date. Listen, life moves on, man. We don’t wait for anybody. If the fights are going to keep rolling – you know, I didn’t get the deal done fast enough so I lose the date. That’s how it works.
He also says he may walk away from the deal.
I’m not hinting that it’s getting close at all. I knew that this thing was going to be a nightmare to get done, if it can even be done. We’ll find out. Obviously, both guys want to fight each other, but what’s the deal? Can the deal be done? That’s the question. It’s not just Mayweather. It’s both sides of this thing are going to be hard to get done. And absolutely, there’s going to be a point where I’m done. This isn’t what I do, this isn’t my business and I’m definitely going to walk away.
White sets Sunday deadline for McGregor negotiations
White says he is setting Sunday 14th May as the deadline to get McGregor’s part of the deal for the Mayweather fight, or he will walk away.
I plan on having this thing locked up by this Sunday and then moving on to Team Mayweather and starting a negotiation with them. If we really do get it done in that time frame, then this thing could possibly happen. But again, I still need to go negotiate with [Floyd Mayweather’s team]. There’s no guarantee that we’re going to come to a deal…I just can’t keep messing with this thing. I need to run my business and I have to focus on all the other things that are going on around here.
Fertitta: McGregor and Mayweather deserve the money
Fertitta, the ex-UFC owner, says he supports Dana White’s plan to pay Mayweather $100 mil and McGregor $75 mil if they fight.
It’s never too much money. They deserve it. McGregor [will win] for sure. Conor’s a special guy. He’s different. Don’t underestimate him.
White: McGregor and I have ‘agreed on a deal’ for Mayweather bout
The UFC President says he has agreed in principle with McGregor on all the details about the Mayweather fight. White says they just need to put pen to paper, and expect it to be done on Sunday 14 May.
[Conor and I] are not meeting. We’re right there to get this deal done. I would like to get it done this Sunday, and start negotiating with team Mayweather. I think we’re there. Conor and I have agreed on a deal. Then you get a bunch of lawyers involved, and it [could get] stupid. As soon as this is done, we go to work. It will be me and [Al] Haymon, in Vegas or LA…If that deal can get done, then we’ll get it done. If we can’t, I’ll need to move on. It’s either going to happen this year, or it’s never going to happen at all. This isn’t something that I’m going to spend a bunch of time on, or I’m going to dedicate the next three months of my life to. Conor wants to fight twice this year. He feels the same way. He wants one of those fights to be Floyd, if possible.

Lee: McGregor ‘like a triathlete trying to swim against Michael Phelps’
Lee, who has had over 38 professional boxing matches, says that while a Mayweather-McGregor superfight will be entertaining to watch, ultimately McGregor cannot beat Mayweather.
In terms of a contest, I don’t see it being a real fight. Mayweather is the best boxer of our generation. Conor McGregor is a great boxer in UFC but hasn’t had a professional (boxing) fight. It’s like asking a triathlete to swim against Michael Phelps. He has to spread his skills across four or five disciplines and Mayweather is just focused on boxing. If it’s a boxing contest, Mayweather wins hands down. But Conor McGregor is tough and can punch. It’ll be one of the biggest promotions in the history of boxing. It’ll probably do more pay per views and sell more, be unprecedented. It will be a great promotion and a lot of fun watching the build-up.
Daley: Mayweather-McGregor is a ‘huge mismatch’
Daley, who is preparing for his fight with Rory MacDonald in the headline event at Bellator 179, says McGregor has no chance of beating Mayweather.
Most definitely it’s a mismatch. It’s been done well because McGregor fans are sold on the whole concept but you’re talking about one of the best boxers of our time, who has defeated some of the best boxers of our time. Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao. Those four names there McGregor wouldn’t even last three rounds with, let alone the guy who has defeated them all…Boxing is completely different to MMA. McGregor should get in there with a top three British fighter in his weight and see how he fares. I think if he jumps in with the best boxer of our era, it’s a huge mismatch. I can’t fault McGregor when there’s so much money involved…McGregor must be extremely confident to think he can beat or even challenge the best boxer of our time. It’s crazy.
Mayweather: No word from Dana White yet
Mayweather says that he has received no word from Dan White about a McGregor fight, and that he is waiting to talk.
It’s only one fight I think that makes business sense. I came out of retirement because I’m a businessman. I want to give the world what they want to see…McGregor’s a fighter, I’m a fighter, and that’s what the people want to see…I think we can break me and Pacquiao’s number…I’m not here to throw anyone under the bus. I’m a true professional. I can’t say they are waiting on us, and we’re not waiting on them. As soon as his side communicate with my side then the fight will happen…Once my team come to me and say Floyd it’s a go, it’s a go.
McGregor says he has signed contract to fight Mayweather
McGregor says he has signed a contract to fight Mayweather, and is now waiting on the boxer to sign.
It is an honour to sign this record breaking deal alongside my partners Zuffa LLC, The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Paradigm Sports Management. The first, and most important part of this historic contract has now officially been signed off on. Congratulations to all parties involved. We now await Al Haymon and his boxer’s signature in the coming days.
Roddy: The longer Mayweather takes to sign, the better it is for us
Roddy, McGregor’s striking coach, says he wants Mayweather to take his time signing up to fight the Irishman.
He’s very happy with the deal. I was just with Conor yesterday for some training and he’s just excited. He just wants to get it on. I’m sure he’s happy with whatever he has signed, but I really think he’s more excited about the fight in general. To be able to do something like this unbelievable…Conor wants to do things that have never been done before. This is just another moment in his career where he defies all the odds and gets the job done…He is all about success. He wants to generate more income than any other athlete on the planet. Last year I think he was talking about trying to close in on Ronaldo this year. I don’t know if he will beat him or not, but I wouldn’t rule it out.
As for the timing:
We’ve been told certain dates, but it will definitely be this year. Fingers crossed, once the other side gets things done everybody will be happy and then it will be another big extravaganza for fans…We’re training now. The longer it takes Mayweather to sign, the better it is for us. We get more time to study him the longer he drags it out. We can get people in to help us if needs be. I see the negotiation period as just more time for Conor to immerse himself in boxing.
