Issues State of Emergency
Nixon declares a state of emergency and activates the National Guard in advance of a grand jury decision regarding Brown’s death. Nixon:
The National Guard would assist state and local police as needed, in case there is civil unrest when the grand jury’s decision is announced.
Protests continue
Ferguson police and protesters confront each other once again when shots are fired throughout the streets. Police bring in armored tanks and seven more people are arrested despite a curfew that takes effect at midnight. The seven individuals will face charges for failure to disperse. Nixon:
It appeared to cast aspersions on a young man that was gunned down in the street. It made emotions raw.
