Jillian Michaels born in Los Angeles

Birth0 Comments

Jillian Michaels was born in Los Angeles, California to Jo Ann McKarus, a psychotherapist, and Douglas G. McKarus, a personal-injury lawyer.  She grew up an only child but has two younger siblings, a brother named George and a half-sister named Lauren.  Michaels endured a rough childhood marred by low self-esteem and psychological issues. Her mother put her into therapy when she was 5 for night terrors.

Michaels’ parents divorced when she was 12, after being married for 18 years, causing her to develop anger issues and act out.  The breakup took an emotional toll on Michaels, one manifestation of which was weight gain.  By the time she was 13, Michaels was 5’2″ and 175 pounds.

Her mother signed her up for martial arts at age 14 as a way for her to get out her frustrations and to develop self-confidence.  At the age of 17, and after years of fighting, her mother kicked her out to teach her how to fend for herself.

I became pretty angry — no one wanted to deal with me — so when I was 17, my mom was like, ‘You’re not living here.’ I learned a lot being on my own.  I grew up. I had to make money. I learned how to make decisions that are right for me.

‘Maximum Strength Calorie Control’ lawsuit

Documents are filed in L.A. Superior Court claiming the Jillian Michaels Maximum Strength Calorie Control dietary supplements are “worthless.”  The suit asks for an injunction prohibiting the sale of the product, plus damages.

Sadly, Michaels has decided to exploit her fame and goodwill by collaborating with Thin Care and Basic Research to promote a weight loss supplement that purportedly will cause weight loss by itself, without any additional effort on the part of the consumer.

Michaels releases the following statement in response:

Unfortunately, anyone can file a lawsuit in California. All it takes is a $355 filing fee. That research was reviewed by some of the leading weight-loss experts in the world before Jillian would put her name on the product. The lawsuit will be handled in the courts like all other lawsuits, and we are confident we will prevail.

This is a very intimate, personal situation. I’m moving in to people’s homes. I’m going to work with them. I’m living in their daily lives, experiencing their unhealthy habits. It’s tough. It’s been confrontational and intense … But I feel like we’re on track. It’s definitely a process and there is a gigantic learning curve for me because I don’t have months or weeks. I don’t have people that aren’t working or an unlimited amount of money to buy them organic groceries. It’s been a real challenge.
