They like that movie, so it’s really nice that you did something 20, 25 years ago and people still want to talk about it. It’s kind of nice.

Grosse Pointe Blank

Cusack co-writes, co-produces, and stars in this comedy film directed by George Armitage. He plays Martin Blank, a contract killer who goes back to his hometown of Grosse Pointe, Michigan to attend his high school reunion. As he reconnects with his family, friends, and old girlfriend, he tries to accomplish one final hit. He co-stars with Minnie Driver, Alan Arkin, and Jeremy Piven. On being a first-time producer:

Well, it’s all like managing a tidal wave. It’s all kind of a clusterf-ck. But I know enough around the set where I know, “Well, this is what it’ll take to get this done,” and “This is not realistic,” and “Do we have enough for this?” And usually I’ve either written the script or, if I’m producing, I know it. I’ve been around. I’ve done it for a while.

High Fidelity

Cusack co-writes and stars in this film adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel. He plays Rob Gordon, a thirty-something record store owner who tries to understand women and relationships after being dumped by his girlfriend. Co-starring Jack Black, Tim Robbins, Iben Hjejle, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. On accepting the film project:

I could see the geography of each place that Rob would haunt. Wax Trax, Record Exchange… Those were record stores I knew that were exactly like those in the book. That’s one thing about it, but the other is that many young men can identify with Rob’s inner monologue, which is spoken through great, incisive writing.

Elle Magazine interview

Interview0 Comments

Cusack gives interview to Elle about his most violent encounter with a woman.

I was in Almería, Spain, on the set of this movie Straight to Hell. This great female singer, who I won’t name but who was going out with Elvis Costello at the time came over to me. I think she may have been trying to make him jealous, because she said to me, Give me a kiss. I looked over at Elvis Costello, who’s one of my idols, and said to her, Not a good idea. And then she round-housed me to the jaw.
