cash-out-among-stars-650Cash’s, “lost” album, Out Among the Stars is released. The songs were discovered by the label and Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, in 2012. Some of the songs include duets with Waylon Jennings and June Carter Cash. The material was recorded at Nashville’s Columbia Studios in 1981 and 1111 Sound Studios in 1984. John Carter:

Columbia Records had lost interest in Johnny Cash at the time, they didn’t know what to do with him. When I listened to these tracks, it showed the lack of sincere interest that was there – some of these tracks didn’t have guitar solos.

Cash passes away at Baptist Hospital from complications from diabetes, which resulted in respiratory failure. The Cash family will announce funeral arrangements at a later time. Luke Lewis, the President Lost Highway/Chairman UMG Nashville:

Johnny Cash was one of the most amazing people to grace the Earth. His talents as a songwriter and an artist speak for themselves. I’m grateful to Rick Rubin for the opportunity to work him and Johnny on American IV: The Man Comes Around. It was a true honor. To witness him receive his first Gold record in 30 years was one of the proudest moments for all of us at Lost Highway. He and Rick made beautiful music together. Johnny Cash was a beautiful person.

The country star speaks to Kurt Loder just a few weeks before his death about his career, his wife; June Carter, and death:

I expect my life to end pretty soon. I’m 71 years old, but I have unshakable faith. I’ve never turned my back on God. I never thought that God wasn’t there. He’s my counselor, my wisdom — all the good things in my life come from him.

The artist sings a remake of the song that was originally written by Nine Inch Nails’, Trent Reznor. Cash’s cover song is released on his album, American IV: The Man Comes Around. Reznor:

I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. I felt like. I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. Somehow that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure.
