Lewis returns to her post as Chicago Teachers Union President on a part-time basis less than two months after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Lewis endorses Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia in the run for mayor of Chicago against incumbent Rahm Emanuel.
Chicago needs a mayor who has the moral courage to do what’s right for all of the city. That is why I’m throwing my full support behind Jesus ‘Chuy’ Garcia. Chuy is a committed and effective public servant and has been for the last 30 years. Chuy is a consensus builder and a man of the people.
Lewis undergoes emergency surgery after the discovery of a cancerous brain tumor. The Chicago Teachers Union says she is resting comfortably and recovering from her surgery. In a statement, Jhatayn “Jay” Travis, coordinator of the Karen Lewis Exploratory Committee says that Lewis has decided to not pursue a mayoral bid.
Yet she charges us to continue fighting for strong neighborhood schools, safe communities, and good jobs for everyone.
