Kit Harington 05Christopher Catesby Harington is born in London, the son of David Richard Harington and Deborah Jane, nee Catesby. At the age of 11, he moves to Worcester with his parents and brother, John Catesby Harington, who is two years older. He is named after Christopher Marlowe, but discovers his full name only at the age of 11. He attends Southfield Primary School, Chantry High School and Worcester Sixth Form College. His mother, a playwright, often takes the family to Royal Shakespeare Company productions in Stratford-Upon-Avon:

Winter is Coming

Harington appears as Jon Snow in the first episode of Game of Thrones, Winter is Coming. Sean Bean plays his father, Lord Eddard Stark. Jon accompanies his younger half-brother Bran Stark, played by Isaac Hempstead-Wright, to watch the execution by Lord Eddard of a deserter from the Night’s Watch. He praises Bran’s courage in being able to witness the act. Heading back to the Stark stronghold of Winterfell, the group encounter a dead direwolf by the road. They discover that it has five pups that are still alive, one for each of the trueborn Stark children. Jon convinces Lord Eddard to let the children raise them. He discovers a sixth pup, the smallest of the litter, and takes it for his own. At Winterfell, King Robert Baratheon arrives to name Lord Eddard the Hand of the King. As Lord Eddard’s illegitimate child, Jon is barred from attending the banquet with the royal party by Lady Catelyn Stark. He is comforted by Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage, who relates the difficulties of being a dwarf with the difficulties of being illegitimate, and tells Jon that he must embrace who he is.

The Kingsroad

Harington appears as Jon Snow in the second episode of Game of Thrones, The Kingsroad. Sean Bean plays his father, Lord Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark. At Winterfell, Lord Eddard is preparing to leave for King’s Landing with the royal party and his two daughers, Arya and Sansa Stark. Jon leaves with Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage, to head north to the Wall of Westeros where he intends to join the Night’s Watch. Ned tells Jon that although he is illegitimate, they share the same blood. As they travel north, Tyrion informs Jon that the Night’s Watch is not a noble band of warriors, but a group of criminals and unwanted sons.

Lord Snow

Harington appears as Jon Snow in the third episode of Game of Thrones, Lord Snow. Peter Dinklage plays the dwarf Tyrion Lannister, the youngest son of the Lannister noble family. Owen Teale plays Ser Alliser Thorne, the master-of-arms at Castle Black. At the Wall of Westeros on the northern edge of the Seven Kingdoms, Ser Alliser pits Jon against other Night’s Watch recruits in training. Jon’s castle training allows him to easily defeat the others, however Ser Allyser remains unimpressed. After the training several recruits accost Jon and threaten to beat him, but Tyrion prevents this. Jon complains that they resent him for being better than them, but Tyrion informs him that while Jon was raised in a castle, they are mostly impoverished farm boys and peasants. Jon is informed that his younger half-brother, Bran Stark, is alive after an accident but has been left crippled. He decides that to survive at the Wall he must make allies. At training, instead of humiliating the recruits, he helps them improve.

Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things

Harington appears as Jon Snow in the fourth episode of Game of Thrones, Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things. Samwell Tarly, played by John Bradley-West, arrives at the Wall of Westeros to join the Night’s Watch. He is immediately targeted by the other recruits for being overweight, unskilled at combat, and a self-admitted coward. Jon decides to protect Samwell although he is stunned that anyone would admit to being a coward. Samwell reveals that his father disinherited him due to his unmanly nature, and that he came to the wall to avoid being killed in a contrived hunting accident. Jon convinces the other recruits to avoid hurting Sam in training as he says that Sam is just like themselves – he came to the Wall as he had no place in the world.

The Wolf and the Lion

At the Wall of Westeros, Jon is frustrated to learn that he has been named the personal steward to the commander of the Night’s Watch. He had expected to be made a ranger due to his combat skills. Samwell informs him that while the choice may seem unfair, it is a chance for him to study leadership skills directly. Jon and Samwell head north of the Wall, out of the Seven Kingdoms, to take their oaths as men of the Night’s Watch in a sacred grove. As their vows are completed, Jon’s direwolf emerges from the woods carrying a severed hand.

The Pointy End

Harington appears as Jon Snow in the eighth episode of the first season of Game of Thrones, The Pointy End. John Bradley-West plays Samwell ‘Sam’ Tarly. James Cosmo plays Jeor Mormont, the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. At Castle Black on the Wall of Westeros, Jon is informed of the arrest of his father, Lord Eddard Stark, for treason. Jon and other members of the Night’s Watch find several bodies from a ranging party that had failed to return to the castle. Sam notes that they do not smell as if they are decomposing. Jon and Sam say the bodies should be burned, but are overruled. Later that night, one of the bodies comes to life as a reanimated corpse and attacks Mormont. Jon is unable to kill the undead creature with his sword but finally defeats it with fire from an oil lamp.

Peter Vaughan plays Maester Aemon, Night’s Watch healer. At Castle Black on the Wall of Westeros, Jon is given a Valyrian steel sword for his courage in saving Jeor from an attack by an undead corpse. Jeor says that he has sent Ser Alliser Thorne to King’s Landing with the severed hand of the undead creature to prove to the king that the White Walkers exist. Jon considers deserting the Night’s Watch to join the army of his half-brother Robb Stark. Maester Aemon reveals that he is descended from the Targaryen royal family but that he remained a dedicated Night’s Watchman even though he had the chance to rule Westeros. He tells Jon that Jon must decide where his own duty lies.

John Bradley-West plays Jon’s companion, Samwell ‘Sam’ Tarly, and Mark Stanley and Josef Altyn play the Night’s Watchmen Grenn and Pyp. At Castle Black on the Wall of Westeros, Jon makes a decision to desert the Night’s Watch and travel south to join his half-brother, Robb Stark, in the war against the Lannisters. He is chased by other Night’s Watchmen and when one of them falls, he realizes it is Sam and returns to help him. Sam, Grenn and Pyp are able to convince Jon that if his father, Lord Eddard Stark, were still alive, he would not accept his desertion. Jon realizes that Robb also may not accept him as a deserter and that he potentially faces death and dishonor by leaving. Jeor decides to overlook Jon’s desertion as it was motivated by a desire to help his family and the traumatic news of his father’s death. He warns Jon that the war they are facing against the undead White Walkers is far more dangerous than the war between the Lannisters and Starks.

Robert Pugh plays Craster, a tribal ‘wildling’ man north of the Wall of Westeros. The Night’s Watch camp overnight at Craster’s keep while ranging north outside the Seven Kingdoms. Jon is disgusted by Craster’s crude manner and the fact that he apparently commits multiple incest with his many daughters. He argues with Craster when Craster says that no matter the internal politics of Westeros, everyone from the south of the Wall is a ‘southerner’. Jeor reprimands Jon and tells him that while Craster is distasteful, without his aid many Night’s Watchmen would have died while ranging. He tells Jon that if Jon wants to lead, he must learn to follow.

The Night Lands

Harington appears as Jon Snow in the second episode of the second season of Game of Thrones, The Night Lands. John Bradley-West plays his companion, the Night’s Watchman Samwell ‘Sam’ Tarly. North of the Wall of Westeros, the Night’s Watch shelter at the homestead of the tribal ‘wildling’ Craster. Samwell rescues one of Craster’s daughter-wives, Gilly, played by Hannah Murray, when Jon’s direwolf frightens her. Gilly asks Sam to help her escape, as she is worried by what Craster will do to her unborn child if it is a boy. Jon refuses to help, as Craster has warned the Night’s Watchmen not to interfere with his wives. At night, Jon notices Craster taking a baby boy into the woods. He follows, and sees Craster leave the baby in the snow, apparently as an offering to the undead White Walker creatures. Before Jon can intervene, Craster attacks him from behind, knocking him unconscious.

What Is Dead May Never Die

Robert Pugh plays Craster, a ‘wildling’ human from north of the Wall of Westeros. At Craster’s fortified homestead, Craster has beaten Jon unconscious after Jon witnessed him leaving a baby boy in the snow, as an offering to the undead creatures that roam north of the Wall. Craster orders the Night’s Watch out of his keep due to Jon’s actions. Jeor questions Jon, who says that he saw a creature take the baby. Jon realizes that Jeor is aware of Craster’s human sacrifices, but that he will not intervene as Craster is a valuable source of information and shelter for the Night’s Watch. He is horrified by the revelation.

The Ghost of Harrenhal

Harington appears as Jon Snow in the fifth episode of the second season of Game of Thrones, The Ghost of Harrenhal. James Cosmo plays Jeor Mormont, the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. Simon Armstrong plays Qhorin Halfhand, a Night’s Watch elite ranger. Beyond the Wall of Westeros, Jeor leads the Night’s Watch ranging party north to the First of the First Men, an ancient ring fort commanding a hill. They rendezvous with a ranging party led by Qhorin. Qhorin says that the tribal army of wildlings led by Mance Rayder, a renegade Night’s Watchman who has become King-Beyond-the-Wall, are strengthening. He advises sending a small party of rangers ahead to neutralize Mance’s scouts in the Skirling Pass through the Frostfang Mountains. Jon joins Qhoren’s party as they venture ahead of the main group.

The Old Gods and the New

Simon Armstrong plays Qhorin Halfhand, the leader of a band of Night’s Watch rangers on a mission in the Frostfang mountains north of the Wall of Westeros. Rose Leslie plays Ygritte, a red-headed young female wildling warrior in the army of Mance Rayder, the King-Beyond-the-Wall. Qhoren’s rangers encounter a group of wildling scouts in the Skirling Pass through the Frostfangs, killing all of them in combat except Ygritte. Qhoren leaves Jon alone with Ygritte with orders to execute her as the rest of the party continue up the mountain. Jon hesitates, allowing Ygritte to escape, and then pursues her and takes her prisoner. Separated from the rest of the party, they realize that they will have to spend the night together in the mountains before searching for the party when daylight returns.

A Man Without Honor

Rose Leslie plays Ygritte, a young redheaded female wildling warrior in the army of Mance Rayder, the King-Beyond-the-Wall. In the Frostfang mountains north of the Wall of Westeros, Jon and the captured Ygritte remain separated from the main scouting party of Night’s Watch rangers. Ygritte criticizes Jon for ignoring the common ancestry between himself and the wildlings, saying that they are both descended from the original Westerosi humans known as the First Men. She says that the only difference is that the wildlings happened to live north of the Wall when it was built to separate the Seven Kingdoms from the north of the continent. She makes fun of Jon’s apparent sexual repression, guessing that he is a virgin, and offers to teach him how to have sex. As he is distracted, Ygritte makes a run for freedom, leading Jon into a wildling ambush.

Ygritte points out that Jon is a member of the Stark noble family, and says Mance will want to personally decide his fate.

Simon Armstrong plays Qhorin Halfhand, the leader of a scouting party of Night’s Watch rangers. In the Frostfang mountains north of the Wall of Westeros, Qhorin and Jon are led as captives towards the army encampment of Mance Rayder, the King-Beyond-the-Wall. In a scheme to establish Jon inside Mance’s army as an informant for the Night’s Watch, Qhorin secretly instructs Jon that he must kill Qorin. He seizes a sword and attacks Jon. As they duel, he allows Jon to kill him. Having gained the trust of the wildlings, Jon is released from his restraints, and told that he will be taken to meet Mance.

Having gained Mance’s trust, Jon marches south with the wildling army towards the Wall. They come across the scene of a battle at a castle where Jon’s Night’s Watch ranging party had been encamped. There are no human corpses, and Mance tells Jon that his former Night’s Watch brothers have been transformed into reanimated corpses by the undead White Walkers. He orders Jon to join a forward party that will scale the Wall and attack the Night’s Watch from the south.
