A solitary reply by Martin Peters for the visitors is not enough to save the Hammers from a 5-3 aggregate defeat. This is the last League Cup Final to be played over two legs.

A huge shock at Wembley as third division Swindon stun hot favourites Arsenal with a  3-1 victory.  Arsenal blame a heavy pitch and a flu bug as a record crowd of 98,169 see two goals from Don Rogers seal the match in extra time for the plucky underdogs.

Manchester City win their second trophy in of the season having won the European Cup Winners Cup Final against Gornik Zabrze just 9 days earlier.  After Astle gives West Brom the lead in the 5th minute, strikes from Doyle and Pardoe give City their first League Cup in front of 97,963 at Wembley.

Spurs win their second League Cup in three years thanks to a long range strike from Ralph Coates in the 72nd minute. As in their first League Cup win two years earlier, a record crowd of 100,000 fill Wembley Stadium.  Spurs now have a record five wins out of five under the famous twin towers.
