Winter is Coming

The children of the Stark noble family are each gifted with a direwolf and Arya names hers Nymeria, after a warrior princess. Arya’s unruly behaviour during King Robert Baratheon’s arrival at the Stark stronghold annoys her older sister Sansa, played by Sophie Turner.

The Kingsroad

Williams appears as Arya Stark in the second episode of the first season of Game of Thrones, The Kingsroad. Arya is gifted a sword by her half-brother Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington. Traveling south with the royal party on the Kingsroad highway towards King’s Landing, Arya becomes involved in a dangerous confrontation with the teenage Prince Joffrey Baratheon, played by Jack Gleeson, and her older sister Sansa Stark, played by Sophie Turner. Joffrey threatens Arya with his sword and her direwolf intervenes, injuring Joffrey. She escapes into the forest and forces her direwolf to flee as she knows that it will be killed for hurting the prince. Found by men loyal to her father, Lord Eddard Stark, she is taken before King Robert Baratheon for judgement. Queen Cersei Lannister, played by Lena Headey, insists that a direwolf be punished for the injury to her son. As Arya’s direwolf cannot be found, Sansa’s direwolf is executed in its place.

Lord Snow

Williams appears as Arya Stark in the third episode of the first season of Game of Thrones, Lord Snow. Sean Bean plays her father, Lord Eddard Stark. In King’s Landing, Lord Eddard discovers Arya’s sword, Needle. Lord Eddard is hesitant about her possessing a dangerous weapon, but allows her to keep it as long as she learns how to use it. He contracts the Braavosi swordsman Sylvio Forel, played by Miltos Yerolemou, to teach Arya the swordfighting style of Braavos, known as the Water Dance.

The Pointy End

Williams appears as Arya Stark in the eighth episode of the first season of Game of Thrones, The Pointy End. Miltos Yerolemou plays her fencing master, the Braavosi swordsman Sylvio Forel. Arya is having a fencing lesson and is unaware of her father’s arrest for treason. Lannister guards appear and claim that her father has sent them, but she realizes that this is a trick. Using his wooden training sword, Sylvio is able to defeat all of but one of the guards. As he faces the last man, Arya escapes without knowing what Sylvio’s fate will be. Arya runs to the stables where Stark men were waiting to transport her to a ship traveling for Winterfell, but the men are dead. She finds her sword in the bottom of her trunk. As a stableboy attempts to accost her from behind, she accidentally impales him with the sword. Arya escapes into the dungeons of the Red Keep.

Baelor

Sean Bean plays her father, Lord Eddard  Stark while Francis MaGee plays the Night’s Watchman Yoren. After Lord Eddard’s arrest and her escape from the royal stronghold, Arya is living on the streets of King’s Landing. She sees crowds moving through the streets and is told that the Hand of the King is being brought to the Sept of Baelor, the capital’s main place of worship. Arya follows the crowd in order to catch a glimpse of her father, who is being brought to the sept in chains. Unaware of the true situation, she is rescued by Yoren and before she can witness her father’s execution.

Fire and Blood

Joe Dempsey plays Night’s Watch recruit Gendry. Following the execution of her father, Yoren smuggles Arya out of the city of King’s Landing disguised as a boy. Intending to take her north to the Stark stronghold Winterfell, he tells her that they will be traveling with other Night’s Watch recruits made up of criminals, and she must not reveal her identity. The recruits Lemmy and Hotpie, played by Eros Vlahos and Ben Hawkey, try to take her sword Needle but she threatens them that she has already killed a boy with it and will do so again. Gendry, who is secretly the illegitimate son of King Robert Baratheon, protects Arya from the other recruits.

Joe Dempsey plays Night’s Watch recruit Gendry. A disguised Arya travels north on the Kingsroad with the Night’s Watch recruits. She approaches three caged prisoners and one tells her that his name is Jaqen H’ghar. The other two threaten her. The group is approached by two of the City Watch from King’s Landing. Arya suspects that they are looking for her however they inquire after Gendry. The City Guards leave after being threatened by Yoren, threatening to return with reinforcements. Arya asks Gendry why he is wanted but, unaware that he is the illegitimate child of King Robert Baratheon, Gendry replies that he doesn’t know.

Williams appears as Arya Stark in the third episode of the second season of Game of Thrones, What is Dead May Never Die. Francis MaGee plays the Night’s Watchman Yoren. The Night’s Watch recruit Lommy is played by Eros Vlahos, and Joe Dempsey plays Gendry, a recruit who is secretly King Robert Baratheon’s illegitimate son. As Arya travels north disguised as a recruit, City Watchmen from King’s Landing stop the Night’s Watch group and demand that Gendry be handed over. Yoren refuses and marshals the recruits to fight. During the fighting, Arya frees the prisoner Jaqen H’ghar from his cart, as Yoren is killed and the recruits are overpowered. Mistakenly thinking they have killed Gendry, the City Watchmen take the rest of the party prisoner.

Garden of Bones

Joe Dempsey plays the character Gendry, one of a group of Night’s Watch recruits that Arya is traveling with. The recruits and Arya are taken by Lannister soldiers to the castle of Harrenhal where a Lannister army is encamped. They witness the torture of several captives by Lannister men seeking valuables as spoils of war, as well as information about a secret society known as the Brotherhood. As Gendry is about to be tortured, Lord Tywin Lannister arrives and tells the men to put Gendry and the other captives to work instead. Lord Tywin, played by Charles Dance, notices that Arya is a girl disguised as a boy, and takes her on as a servant.

The Ghost of Harrenhal

Williams appears as Arya Stark in the fifth episode of the second season of Game of Thrones, The Ghost of Harrenhal. Tom Wlaschiha plays the character of Jaqen H’ghar. An army of the Lannister noble family, the main rival to the Starks, is using the castle of Harrenhal as a base. Lord Tywin Lannister, played by Charles Dance, takes Arya into service as a cupbearer. He questions her about her northern accent but she manages to conceal her identity as a Stark. Arya encounters Jaqen H’ghar, who has been recruited as a Lannister soldier. As Arya had freed him from a cart during the battle in which her group of Night’s Watch recruits was captured by the Lannister men, he tells her that he is in her debt and will kill three people for her if she provides him their names. Arya gives the nickname of a soldier who had previously tortured captives, and later finds him dead.

The Old Gods and the New

Williams appears as Arya Stark in the sixth episode of the second season of Game of Thrones, The Old Gods and the New. Charles Dance plays Lord Tywin Lannister and Aidan Gillen plays Lord Petyr Baelish, the royal treasurer. At the Lannister army encampment at Harrenhal castle, Lord Tywin has taken Arya into service as a cupbearer. Arya is surprised by the visit of Lord Petyr, who she is familiar with from her time in King’s Landing, but she is able to keep her identity as a Stark secret from him and from Lord Tywin. While Lord Tywin is distracted, she notices that a letter on his table refers to her older brother Robb Stark, who is fighting a war with the Lannister armies. She steals the letter and runs outside, but a Lannister loyalist sees her carrying it and becomes suspicious. She is able to alert Jaqen H’ghar, an assassin who is in her debt, and he kills the man before he is able to inform Lord Tywin of what he saw.

Williams appears as Arya Stark in the seventh episode of the second season of Game of Thrones, A Man Without Honor. Charles Dance plays Lord Tywin Lannister. At the Lannister-held castle Harrenhal, Arya is in the service of Lord Tywin as his cupbearer as war continues between the Lannister and Stark families. Lord Tywin investigates the death of one of his men who was killed by an assassin at Arya’s command. Arya’s role remains undetected, however Lord Tywin questions her about her pronunciation, suspecting that she is highborn. Arya is able to convince him that her mother served a highborn family, hiding her identity as a Stark.

The Prince of Winterfell

Charles Dance plays Lord Tywin Lannister, and Tom Wlaschiha plays the assassin Jaqen H’ghar. At the castle of Harrenhal, Lord Tywin decides to march his army west to face Robb Stark, Arya’s older brother. Arya realizes that she has missed the chance to have Lord Tywin assassinated by Jaqen H’ghar. With the help of H’ghar, she and her companions are able to escape Harrenhal.

After escaping the Lannister forces at Harrenhal castle, Arya encounters Jaqen H’ghar, Tom Wlaschiha, who is waiting for her outside the stronghold. He offers to ke her to Braavos and teach her the art of assassination so that she can kill her growing list of enemies. Arya refuses and Jaqen H’ghar gives her a coin. He says that if she ever needs to find him again, she must give the coin to a Braavosi and say the words valar morghulis.

Her companions Gendry and Hot Pie are played by Joe Dempsie and Ben Hawkey. After escaping from Lannister forces at Harrenhal castle, Arya, Gendry and Hot Pie are taken in by the secret society known as the Brotherhood Without Banners and given food and drink at an inn. Members of the Brotherhood bring the captive kingsguard Sandor Clegane, played by Rory McCann. Clegane recognizes Arya and notifies their captors that she is a daughter of the Stark noble family.
