Fear

Wahlberg plays David McCall, who falls in love with Nicole Walker (Reese Witherspoon). His tenderness turns to violence, as he stalks and terrorizes her and her friends and family. This psycho drama is directed by James Foley. Co-starring William Petersen, Alyssa Milano and Amy Brenneman.

I don’t know any serial killers or stalkers so I just tried to invent my own style of stalking. The whole idea was to try and make it as simple and basic as possible. I didn’t want to appear to be acting. The stereotypical bad guy is loud, obnoxious and crazy looking. My character is multi-dimensional, very nice in the beginning. You really couldn’t pinpoint what was going to happen or who was gonna do it. That’s what I liked about it. I didn’t want to exert myself too much, I just thought that he only did things because of what other people did, or mistakes that he made. It was all there on paper, it was just a matter of playing it out.

The Big Hit

Wahlberg plays hitman Melvin Smiley, who undertakes a kidnapping job to payoff his second girlfriend’s debt in this comedy drama is directed by Che-Kirk Wong. Co-starring Lou Diamond Phillips, Christina Applegate, Bokeem Woodbine, Antonio Sabato, Jr., Avery Brooks, China Chow, lliott Gould, Lainie Kazan and Lela Rochon.

Well the funny thing about this movie is that this one cost about half of what it cost to make Boogie Nights. That’s is a huge surprise to most people ‘cuz it looks so big, like a real expensive film. Wong did an amazing job. All credit to him. I had finished Boogie Nights and I needed to do something that was a total 180 from that. When I read the script, the comedy aspect really got me. When I saw Kirk’s movie with Jackie Chan, I saw it was more about the acting than the action. That was impressive to me.

The Corruptor

Wahlberg plays Danny Wallace, a detective who is secretly tasked by Internal Affairs to monitor Chen (Chow Yun-fat) for corruption. This action drama is directed by James Foley.

I can feel that he is a very active energy—full of energy boy, and he is very talented. You know he is a very famous rap singer and you can get rhythm from him. He’s very energized on the set. He gives you a lot of optimism. Spend time with him and you feel younger and younger everyday, says Chow.

Things don’t quite go as planned in this action drama directed by David O. Russell. The film also stars George Clooney, Ice Cube, Spike Jonzeand Nora Dunn. Russell:

Mark is very serious as an actor and I think more people will increasingly understand. His ambitions are equal to De Niro’s, and I think people will get that as he builds his body of work. He was perfect for this role.

The Yards

Wahlberg plays Leo Handler, an ex-con who struggles to make a clean life for himself, but his job in a Queens, New York subway rail repair yard embroils him in corruption and murder. This action drama is directed by James Gray. Co-starring Joaquin Phoenix, Charlize Theron, Ellen Burstyn and James Caan.

Mark and I blocked it out of ourselves. We wanted it to be an epic battle, falling down the stairs and out on to the street. We had elbow pads and knee pads, but on the first take Mark just grabbed me with his pinkie, flipped me into the air and I landed on my head. Man, did I have a bump. I was black and blue for days. But I sure as hell wasn’t gonna do any f-cking John Wayne-style punching. I wanted it to be sloppy and barbaric and painful, like I’m hugging the life out of this guy who’s my friend while I’m pounding at him, said Gray while describing a cinematic fight with Wahlberg.

Wahlberg plays Chris Cole, a the lead singer in a Heavy Metal tribute band in this musical drama directed by Stephen Herek. After being fired from the band, Cole finds himself auditioning to replace the real band’s singer. Co-starring  Jennifer Aniston, Dominic West, Timothy Spall and Timothy Olyphant.

I’d have to listen to the singing in the movie closely. I studied with the vocal coach for six months, but we also had somebody else who sang the songs. But whenever we performed, we performed live, so I’d have to pay attention to the songs. If I could hit them all, it would only be my voice.

Wahlberg plays Charlie Croker, who seeks revenge for the murder of his mentor, John Bridger(Donald Sutherland) in this action drama, directed by F. Gary Gray. Co-starring Charlize Theron, Edward Norton, Seth Green, Jason Statham, Mos Def.

I play kind of like the leader of this crew. I certainly treat them as equals. Everybody has their own field of expertise – and  the director F. Gary Gray did an amazing job of assembling the talent. Everybody had to be able to do their own thing; I think that’s what separates this movie from all the other movies.

Four Brothers

Wahlberg plays Bobby Mercer, who along with his three brothers seek revenge of murder of their adoptive mother. This action drama is directed by John Singleton. Co-starring Tyrese Gibson, André Benjamin and Garrett Hedlund.

The opportunity to play that kind of guy, the opportunity to make a movie that I would actually run out to go see. As opposed to a lot of movies I’ve made where if I wasn’t in it I would probably wait until I caught it on a plane or in a hotel or something. So yeah, everything about it. I just thought that this was right up my wheelhouse, and if done the right way with the right guys, this could be a very special movie.

Invincible

Wahlberg plays Vince Papale, who becomes a member of the Philadelphia Eagles football team as a 30-year-old. He is the oldest rookie to make an NFL team who never played college ball. This sports drama is directed by Ericson Core. Co-starring Greg Kinnear and Elizabeth Banks.

It’s a big deal. The only other time I had experience that was in The Perfect Storm and obviously it was an extremely sensitive subject because of the tragic loss of all those guys. But with Vince, he was just so happy to get the movie made and I mean, I swear to god, it didn’t matter if Jackie Chan was playing me. He would have been happy. I swear to god, he was just so happy the movie was being made.

Wahlberg plays Staff Sergeant Dignam, an undercover officer whose family ties to organized crime make him a perfect infiltrator in this action drama directed by Martin Scorsese. Co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone and Vera Farmiga, Alec Baldwin.

I had a good time working with the acclaimed filmmaker. “It was a great experience. He let me go nuts. He said, ‘Do what you want, say what you want.’”

Shooter

Wahlberg plays Bob Lee Swagger, who is a U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant. He is double-crossed and framed for a plot to kill the President and goes on the run to find the real killer and the reason he was set up. This action drama is directed by Antoine Fuqua. Co-starring Danny Glover, Ned Beatty, Michael Peña, Tate Donovan and Kate Mara.

Compared to Invincible, it was nothing. It was a walk in the park. But getting down to be as thin as I was for the movie, that was difficult. Then of course there was all the mental prep, learning everything that snipers need to know in the short amount of time that we had. It was a lot of running and jumping in this one.

We Own the Night

Wahlberg plays Joseph Grusinsky, the son of a police captain who, unlike his brother, has joined the police force and is a rising star. This crime drama is directed by James Gray. Co-starring Joaquin Phoenix, Eva Mendes and Robert Duvall.

I had worked with Gray on The Yards, and he was writing his next screenplay and he asked me if I wanted to be a part of it, he had originally set it up at Warner Brothers. I was very excited about my experience of working with James and just thought he was a super talent. So he wrote the script with me in mind, and then it was very difficult to get it off the ground, we finally got it going, got it out of Warner Brothers, and we had approached a couple of independent financiers, and we were finally able to get the movie made. So anything that James is going to do, I would love to be a part of.

Wahlberg plays Elliot Moore, a high school science teacher who investigates mass suicides taking place In New York City’s Central Park. This thriller drama is directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Co-starring Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo and Betty Buckley.

I play a science teacher, definitely a part that people will be extremely surprised that I decided to play. He’s constantly reminding me of how I need to walk. No, that looks too tough, that looks too angry. You’re a science teacher, you know. But I love it.

Wahlberg plays Max Payne, a cop determined to track down those responsible for the brutal murders of his family and partner. This action drama is directed by John Moore. Co-starring Mila Kunis, Beau Bridges, Chris Bridges, Chris O’Donnell, Donal Logue and Olga Kurylenko.

I’d just done The Happening with M Night Shyamalan, where I’d played a science teacher, and I played an accountant in The Lovely Bones, so I was looking to go back and do something with a lot of action and intensity. I read this script and loved it.

The Lovely Bones

In this supernatural drama directed by Peter Jackson, Wahlberg plays Jack, the father of  a murdered 14-year-old girl. He begins to obsessively research his neighbors to try to find out who killed her. Co-starring Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Michael Imperioli and Saoirse Ronan.

My biggest reason for wanting to be a part of this was Peter Jackson. I’m a huge fan of Peter’s. Because of the way I approach work, I wasn’t all that thrilled about the subject matter because I have a beautiful little girl and two beautiful boys. I don’t have the God-given talent that Rachel has to just snap into it and have these floods of emotion coming out and then turn it all off. So I basically had to live in that headspace for the entire time. I just thought it would be a beautiful movie and it was too good to pass up the opportunity to be a part of it.

Ted

Wahlberg plays John Bennett. As a boy, Bennet wishes for his new Christmas gift, a large teddy bear named Ted, to come to life to be his friend. The two get into many predicaments and drama unfolds as Bennett grows up and questions his relationship with Ted. Directed by Seth MacFarlane and co-starring Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane, Joel McHale and Giovanni Ribisi.

I heard the concept and I was like, ‘I’m not really interested in this movie. I don’t want to be doing a movie with a teddy bear.’ But then my agent said, ‘Just read the script’ and I said, ‘Okay.’ I read the script. Thirty pages into it, I forgot that it was a bear. I thought, ‘Wow, this is a great buddy movie and I really get the dilemma’.

Planet of the Apes

Wahlberg plays Leo Davidson, an Air Force astronaut, who crashes on a planet called Ashlar in the year 5021. There he discovers that the world is ruled by humanoid apes, who can speak and treat human beings as slaves. The film is directed by Tim Burton and co-stars Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti and Estella Warren.

Acting with people in gorilla suits is not exactly something that turned me on but I had to keep reminding myself the reason why I was there. There were days that I started to panic. The first day I freaked out. There was this kid with tribal markings on his face, a guy in a gorilla suit and Helena. It all seemed pretty ridiculous.

Contraband

Wahlberg plays Chris Farraday, an ex-smuggler who heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills to protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord. This action drama is directed by Baltasar Kormákur. Co-starring Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi.

I saw the original and I fell in love with it. I thought, what a cool way to do a heist thriller that has a lot of heart and intensity. I love the character and the way he was able to respond to things and react. He was as smart as he was tough. I just thought it was really cool when I saw it and that an American version would be very entertaining.
